Back in March, we asked the Nintendo Life community if The Legend of Zelda was a role-playing series. According to more than half the votes, it's not.
What if it was though? A freelance artist known as John Bond (@kaimatten over on Twitter), has shared an image of what the 2002/03 GameCube entry The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker might have looked like if it was a turn-based RPG. The result is a stunning piece of pixel art featuring a scene that would have perfectly fit in with the Game Boy Advance generation.
The closest fans ever really got to a portable version of The Wind Waker was The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and the follow-up, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - both of which were released on the Nintendo DS. In recent times, there have also been rumours about Link's epic cel-shaded adventure making a return for Zelda's 35th anniversary.
How would you feel if Nintendo decided to swap from the typical "Action Adventure" to a traditional role-playing game, requiring you to build a party, level up and take on half-hour boss battles? Would you be interested in a game like the one above? Leave a comment down below.

Man, this looks absolutely gorgeous!
Especially fits for a game with amazing combat!
That's some nice pixel art. Makes me want to do some again. It's satisfying.
I would play that.
Darn and I was going to play windwaker. Now I don't have because of the SPOILERS. GEEZ thanks.
@N8tiveT3ch
Same here, but there isn’t much I can complain about a game that came out almost 20years ago
@N8tiveT3ch Wait, fighting Ganon at the end of a Zelda game is considered a spoiler now? Guess I shouldn't tell you that we'll fight Bowser at the end of the next Mario game.
Well, it was Minish Cap, but the same bootleg Chinese Famicom game company that turns everything into an RPG also turned that into a turn-based RPG.
I assume a very rushed and broken game like their other games are said to have turned into.
@UsurperKing Really that was Bowser?! I thought it was Wario in a suit...Just goes to show you how much I know. Gosh I'm dumb.
@MiphaTheChampion Sure be now you got these youngins' that didn't know. I kinda spoiler my bro the FF Remake that the one chick dies. He was SO SAD that I ruined a major point in gaming that I had to take him to get ice cream to calm him down.
I'd play a turn based Zelda game for sure
Oooh this is very nicely done indeed!
Oh no, big spoilers!!! So be it. I will not buy your game!!! That's it. Topic closed!
A Zelda turn based RPG would be aewsome.
I would totally play a turn based Zelda RPG spinoff, I mean if Mario can do it so can the Zelda series.
I actually want to see either a Zelda turn base RPG or tactical RPG like Fire Emblem
I'd play it for sure, especially if it has Mario RPG style action commands.
While I would prefer Zelda to remain action-oriented, I would definitely play an RPG spin-off! They pixel art is awesome!
I'd play that. Definitely. But the Link sprite couldn't convince me this could have been a real game.
As for the spoilers, well, while it's 20 years old, it will probably be re-released soon, and be new for an entirely new generation, on a much more successful platform than it has ever been released for (even combining the two previous releases the Switch makes the previous install base negligible). Then again, if you didn't expect to fight the main bad guy at the end of a finished action adventure, then I suppose everything ever is a spoiler for everything it has even remotely anything to do with. Then you shouldn't even eat a banana or watermelon, because you already know what's on the inside, and that it's good for you. Stupid people, spoiling the best food known to mankind for me by telling me it tastes good and is healthy...
I've always imagined a Zelda RPG but no Link involved. Instead the party is made up of other Zelda world cultures/races. Gorons, Zora, Kokiri Tribe, the Sheikah and I guess now Rito.
Maybe it's Zelda who's the main character and her and the band are on their way to rescue Link.
OH! OR THE TRI-FORCE OF POWER CORRUPTED HIM AND HE'S THE MAIN BAD GUY
Of the side games of the Wind Waker Series, what was you guys favorite game.
Mine is Spirit Tracks, the Soundtrack throughout that game is amazing. Along with Byrne.
Art is great but turn-based RPG would take every bit of fun out of the game. It would ruin the pace.
