At the 2019 Pokémon press conference, The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara announced a follow-up to the 2018 3DS title Detective Pikachu would be released on the Nintendo Switch.
This new game will conclude the original game's story and will play out differently to the ending featured in the Detective Pikachu film. Although there's no word on a release date or an official title, it has been revealed Creatures Inc is once again handling the development.
Are you surprised by this announcement? Have you seen the new movie yet starring Ryan Reynolds? Did you play the original game? Tell us in the comments.

So much yes! I am ready!
No doubt spurred on by the success of the movie.
This was inevitable given the interest surrounding the movie.
Nice. Count me in!
Hell yeah! Bring on more Pikachu
Is anyone really surprised?
Welp, gotta have something for the movie sequel to be based on.
Honestly not sure if I'll bother buying it TBH. Planned on getting the first game, but then they made a movie for it based on the game, and they're gonna do it again I'd guess. I'd rather spend $9 at a theater than $60 on a game...
I'm game. The ending of the first one, unlike the movie, was perfectly set up for a sequel.
I just hope they justify the $60 price tag. Detective Pikachu was a great 3DS game, but I wouldn't have spent $40 on it. (It was a gift)
Is there a trailer out yet?
Looks like I need to play the first game.
I thought detective pikachu just came out last year?
I need a port of the original, kthanks.
They better port the original onto Switch. I actually missed out on the first one, I guess since I don't really use my 3DS as much any more.
I'm hoping the sequel is GOOD this time.
The first game was painfully dry and ended not only on a cliffhanger, but tons of loose ends even regarding the most basic establishments.
The movie was much more fulfilling on all fronts.
If this is the Unreal Engine project that Creatures Inc teased in December 2017, then I can already assure it will be very promising.
I wonder how it will play out as a home experience compared to the prequel... I mean, narrative games on consoles have more deep mechanics, like decision-making, etc.
The first game was quite technically impressive for the 3DS, but I'm not so sure we'll see that with the Switch.
Doesn't matter, though. What's more exciting for me is whether the new game will lean towards the universe of the film, or be a direct continuation of the world from the first game.
There's QUITE the disparity between the two.
I really would have preferred something along the lines of an extended remake with more 'game' to it. Detective Pikachu on 3DS was gorgeous and I enjoyed the interactions between the characters but even Ace Attorney had more gameplay and WAY less hand holding. I get that it's a game for kids, but making actual decisions and figuring things out for yourself is much more rewarding than the game telling you "Hey, go this way and that guy did it."
The original gameplay should have been reserved as an 'easy' mode.
Can't say I was surprised with this. Especially since a detective pikachu 2 movie was announced
That’s cool! The original is quite fun.
I was expecting this to be announced. Creatures hasn’t released anything for several years
"...and will play out differently to the ending featured in the Detective Pikachu film." So basically, the movie is non-canon. Okie doke.
I'm interested how the ending of the game's story will play out.
Not TOO differently, I hope.
The movie was FANTASTIC and I hope it keeps a kind of loose continuity with the games/anime/manga, story-wise.
SPOILERS:
To me, it seemed like the movie COMPLETED the story, while the ending of the game just gave them an excuse to keep Harry and Pikachu fused together, (i.e. They still have work to do for Mew-Two?) so they can continue the concept/character for another game.
Maybe this game will expand upon the concept of the big finale set-piece from the movie, the villain's plot of fusing humans and Pokemon, with Mew-Two un-fusing Harry and Pikachu at the end, after the job is done.
Wonder if we'll get Ryan's voice talents?
<<SPOILERS AHEAD>>
Well, the first Detective Pikachu game didn't go as far revealing that Pikachu was in fact Tim's father, even though it was heavily suggested by the storyline. The movie however did reveal that so I hope there's going to be a lot more introduced in the game.
Bet since the Switch is more powerful it will have the "amazing" realistic designs instead of the anime style ones Pokemon are known for..
No surprise but can we get Ryan to voice Pikachu again in it
It beggars belief that they hadn't ported the 3DS game to Switch in time for the movie release.
A software bundle with the Detective Pikachu amiibo would have sold like hotcakes.
A bolt of brilliance! I just hope it's longer than the original.
Somehow this is one of my most played 3DS games (16th I think), so I can't wait for some gameplay of this! I'm expecting it to be a winter 2020 release, so I expect some footage later this year or early next year. I don't think they'll wait until June to show this.
I'm kicking myself for missing out on the 30% off My Nintendo coupon that was up for Detective Pikachu 3DS in North America. I should have just redeemed the coins for the coupon. Ohh well. Maybe the Switch version will have a bit of a summary of the 1st game for those of us who never played it.
It's a game about a movie about a game?
Cool, with full HD graphics running on a more powerful console I think a Detective Pikachu game would look great.
Hopefully a new Amiibo with the sherlock vest.
