In the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, it was revealed XSEED Games and Marvelous will be bringing Rune Factory 4 Special to the Nintendo Switch later this year. This title is based on the 2013 3DS release, which was a unique combination of fantasy farming and action role-playing gameplay, with some dating simulation elements thrown in for good measure. In the special edition, you'll interact with townsfolk, marry them, grow vegetables and fruit, fish, raise monsters and wield weapons and spells.
If that wasn't already enough, it was also confirmed Rune Factory 5 is finally in development. More information about this upcoming Switch release will be revealed in the future. For now, here's the official logo and the brief Nintendo Direct segment:
Are you a fan of the Rune Factory series? Will you be buying the special version of the fourth game on Switch? Or will you hold out for the fifth? Tell us below.

That's farm-tastic!
Hallelujah! What a day!
I didn't think this series would see the light of day again. Soooooo excited.

XIAO-PAI FOR SMASH!!!
This was my ultimate NEVER EVER, even more so than TWEWY 2. I wish I taped my reaction so we could all have a good laugh, I was freaking out. Never would have thought today would be the day.
Know almost nothing about the game but recognize it’s place in people’s hearts glad folk are psyched, maaaaay have a go at some point.
I haven’t played Rune Factorynsince the first. I’m honestly all farm sim’d our after playing Stardew Valley all summer.
I was so happy to see both of these. I truly believed the series died with Neverland's bankruptcy. I can't wait to see more of 5
I had a Rune Factory game for Wii. I remember thinking it was decent, but not playing it that much. Honestly, I didn't think the footage of 4 looked that great, but I like this style of game, so I will definitely keep an eye on it!
What? No Story of Seasons????
I was so excited about this! RF4 is probably my favorite game ever.
Highlight of the Direct for me. Would've preferred they ported one of the first three games instead though, I just started 4 on 3DS...
The game looked real interesting. And judging by some of the ecstatic comments I am seeing, I am even more interested.
Never thought the day would come! I’m so happy with the announcement! Today was a Good Nintendo direct for me~
Thank you XSeed, I miss this series so much. Nice to hear that they are coming back and better than ever.
I’ve spent a good 800+ hours on 4 and didn’t even finish the story so I’d definitely double dip for all the extras. I can’t believe 5 is happening at all after the studio died.
YYYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!
Ok Marvelous, I take back all the cattle prod jokes I made. You did know best indeed.
And a new bokumono?! I need a money tree. Finally story of seasons on Switch. I don’t care that it is a crossover.
I’m probably one of the few that thinks the Wii version “Frontier” was the best. To be fair, I never played 4.
@klingki “Frontier” for Wii; I was actually really impressed by it (maybe not so much it’s waggle motion control, but at least they were optional)
@Antraxx777 Frontier was pretty good. I just really don't like the Runey system it had.
OMG - YES!! A new Rune Factory? Someone pinch me - it can't be real. I literally accepted it that the series was dead. That RF5 is indeed on the way literally made me smile ear to ear - almost made me tear up tbh.
In any case, the Rune Factory series is so great - I especially loved Frontier and Tides of Destiny. I enjoyed the DS games, but they felt a bit underwhelming after playing the console version.
I can't wait for this!
@Antraxx777 Yes, that's the one I have! Maybe if I get the urge to dust off my old retro games (it's weird calling Wii retro, can we do that yet?) I'll give it another shot.
@Burning_Spear japan only as it is a crossover.
Now I'm glad that I didn't buy it for the 3ds due to the release issues.
I was going to buy RF4 on 3DS this year, so day one buy for me
A very welcome surprise.
WHAT! Rune Factory?! Aaaw, just another of them remakes, too good to be true... WHAT!! Rune Factory 5?! Oh my poor heart...
Never heared of this series and they are already on part 4 / 5... Looks cool though! Will keep and eye on this.
So did this not have the HORRIBLE runey system? I loved the wii game but that just ruined it for me.
@SetupDisk I played RF4, and I don't know what the runey system is, so probably not?
@PerishSong Fantastic, if it was there you would have remembered it.
So happy about this. Started playing RF4 on 3ds, but never managed to finish it due to the Switch release and now I can finally try again and high resolution! So awesome!
I must be missing something, because from that trailer it looked terrible. Like a Korean F2P MMO from 15 years ago.
So I really love Rune Factory, but damn, 4 Special looks really cheap.
Absolutely fantastic news, someone on here assured me it was coming. I can’t remember who it was but I doubted them, very happy to have been wrong.
Edit: @Braden - I think it was you! Well done, friend.
@SmaggTheSmug Ehh you do know Rune Factory 4 is a 3DS game.
It's just a straight up port to the Nintendo Switch and just upped the resolution a bit. Which is nothing wrong with that. It's fanservice! This is not a remake!
It would look the same when porting Bravely Default and Bravely Second to the Switch.
I am pretty sure Rune Factory 5 will look a lot better, since its new development and straight for the Switch.
@SetupDisk No, Frontier was the only game with that system.
So psyched for this! I played RF4 on 3DS four or five years ago, and LOVED it - I had actually been thinking about starting a new file this year, but now I'm definitely going to wait and buy the remastered edition on day one! Also hyped for RF5 - I really thought the series was dead after Neverland went under, it's wonderful to know it will continue on!
"At last, my love has come along-"
XD but seriously, I love this series, it was on my longest of long-shot Switch wishlist, and I couldn't be happier. I really hope this brings the series to a whole new generation of gamers, it's got so much to offer (and 4 was a fabulous installment, well worth revisiting in the meantime!)
@Jezebel95 me too! Was just thinking of replaying 4 recently, but I think it'll be worth it to hold out for the re-release
Thank you!!!
Of course I will be buying both. I enjoyed RF4 back in DS and I'm sure I'll enjoy it again on Switch.
Besides, I want to support these developers to let them know that we - the Rune Factory fans - are still here.
My what the heck moment. I didn't even like 4 on the 3DS that much, but I may give it another chance.
Rune Factory 4 was my favorite game on 3DS for a while, but I played it so much that I don't think I'll be getting it on Switch, especially since it still looks like a 3DS game. I'm super hyped for Rune Factory 5 though.
I always thought Harvest Moon was better. I will get it though. I actually never played Rune Factory. I am excited to see what it's like.
HELL YEAH, RUNE FACTORY 5 IN DEVELOPMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Burning_Spear Actually, one was announced, but it's a crossover with Doraemon so it's not coming west. With any luck it'll have English language support so you can download it anyways. Give it a look, it's gorgeous.
@luke88 Yay I was right! And I almost collapsed once it was announced because I was so happy
I loved rune factory 1, then came back to the series for 4. Really enjoyed it for a while but started to get bored of the routine (which is what has stopped me getting stardew valley), so i nnever completed the story.
I think if I had more gaming time I would be all over this, but games with lots of routine or grind tend to make me feel like I'm missing out on other gaming experiences nowadays.
Can totally understand the draw though.
I was going to reply to this thread, but then there was a typhoon.....
Rune Factory 5 was one of the highlights of the presentation. I thought this series was dead forever, and 4 was sooo good!
Rune Factory 4 I played the hell out of that game, it's what broke my 3ds, addictive and very rewarding. 5 announcement is some miracle.
As much as I loved and will likely re-buy Rune Factory 4, I really hope Rune Factory 5 will be more of a 3D game like Rune Factory Frontier on Wii. I also prefer the fixed-camera and character artwork displaying during conversations in Frontier compared to the free camera and lack of character artwork in Tides of Destiny.
@Braden same here, friend 👍🏻
@Orin41 i hope all people have your way of thinking
