Nintendo has shared a newly-updated maintenance schedule for the Nintendo Network, revealing multiple sessions which could have an impact on online play across Switch, 3DS, and Wii U.
There are three sessions taking place in total, each lasting for just a handful of hours. The information provided says that "online play of some software" could be affected and that "network services may become unavailable" during this period.
Here are the scheduled maintenance times:
North America (Pacific Time):
- [Switch/Wii U/3DS] 23rd January (5:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
- [Switch] 23rd January (9:30 pm) – 24th January (12:30 am)
- [Switch] 27th January (4:50 pm – 6:30 pm)
Which translates to...
Europe (CET):
- [Switch/Wii U/3DS] 24th January (2:00 am – 5:00 am)
- [Switch] 24th January (6:30 am – 9:30 am)
- [Switch] 28th January (1:50 am – 3:30 am)
These maintenance windows can often go by without any disruptions, so your online gaming may well see no problems whatsoever. If you're planning to take on some heated online Super Smash Bros. Ultimate battles or claim those Fortnite Victory Royales, though, just make sure to be a little wary of these particular times.

I'm down for some maintenance. There's always room for improvement.
So basically don't play anything online tonight.
Leading to the release of patch 7.0.0 for Switch? although, that's kinda doubtful.
Smash for me online is frankly unplayable. If this means fixes are imminent then good.
@JediKadabra Yup. Looks like I've got a 1 1/2 hours window between 5 and 630 this evening.
Sorry some folks are still have issues with Smash. I'm not, and I'm running wireless too. Could be lots of bad connection opponents, I suppose.
@subpopz I also rarely get lag in Smash. Smooth as butter.
@JackEatsSparrows Yeah I haven't been having any issues either. At least not like I was with Mario Tennis Aces. By the way, your profile pic is adorable.
@TossedLlama smash is p2p. this means any lag is based on your connection and the other players connections to you.
If you have lag in smash in every match, you are your own problem.
No problems on my end with Smash, or any online really, could be location, whether hard-wired or wireless. Satisfied for my $20.
Stop getting my heart racing with mario make in all these thumbnails-
looking at the UK times I'll either be in work or sleeping so these time's aren't going to effect me.
Would love to have a web browser thrown in for good measure, the one from the Wii U is more than acceptable, loved using that feature
I haven't bought Smash for that reason alone, as soon as they sort the lag out I'll take the plunge.
I've not played a SSB game since the Cube days
@TossedLlama sometimes you really aren't the problem but in this case, if its a constant then its more than likely you.
The first thing you should do is run a ping and packet* loss test for about 2-5 mins. If you notice serious (extreme) ping spikes, or packets not making it to the destination then you have a serious issue on your hands when it comes to gaming and your network in general. In this case, the issue may not even be in your home but something on the path to it. Course that would mean a call to your ISP with proof that something is wrong (ping an packet loss test via traceroute would suffice.)
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit aka how much data you can put in a packet in bytes) likely isn't the issue as nintendo defaults your max to 1400. This isn't optimal for most networks per say but it does guarantee you're not going over your actual maximum your ISP is set to handle. Its generally fine for gaming like this but not optimal. Its not too much a big deal either as MTU uses TCP protocol rather than UDP which most games use. Some games use a mix of TCP and UDP tho.
edit: I guess it should be mentioned but how much bandwidth you have available doesn't mean much in gaming. A program (game in this case) is only gonna use as much bandwidth as it needs. nothing more. if you don't have the bandwidth it needs, then thats when how much download and upload bandwidth you have is actually a factor. Ping and network stability is never governed by how much download and upload bandwidth you have unless you don't have enough available for the program (game).
Could this mean SNES games?
@JackEatsSparrows I’ve only had lag when playing with more than 3 random people but that’s because someone might have had bad internet network. I only play this online and wireless too and have had no lag whatsoever. Maybe all my friends have great connections because when I play them it’s always good, actually great.
huh. Times I don't game. works for me.
MK8 is killing me with "connection errors". Hope they improve something.
@TossedLlama Huzzah!!! Now you have no excuse to avoid my Ridley.
Ya know what I just noticed? There's not many folks trashing Nintendo for having maintenance downtime. Like the ol' "We have to pay for online and now they turn it off??" stuff. I'm slightly disappointed in some of you.
@TossedLlama Glad I could help but you're the one that did all the work.
@itslukec @subpopz Same here, most of my time in Smash Ultimate online worked smooth for me. I did run into a few laggy matches, but other than that it was pretty good.
@Aozz101x the rumours say is coming this week...
@Varelius Send me your address and I’ll send you your cape you bloody hero.
7.0 is coming, stability is now anticipated by hackers. It's hacked before it's even stabilised, there's a mole in Nintendo...
I wonder if this is why I can't redeem my eShop card. I've been trying for about 3 hours and it still isn't recognized.
I haven't really played much Smash online. But I didn't see the issues people are talking about. I seriously wonder if it is really Nintendo's fault, or if it is the fault of the ISP of the people complaining.
Personally I find it more likely people have bad internet.
@welshland you're not missing much by not having purchased Smash yet. Don't know how it's the biggest game out there when one can't even play with a friend against random people online. Quite pathetic if Nintendo really.
