Nintendo has announced that a Mario Tennis Aces Pre-Launch Online Tournament demo will be available to play at the start of next month, with a prize being given out to all participants.
Running from 1st June at 3pm UK time, to 3rd June at 11:59pm UK time, the demo will allow players to compete against others for free, testing out their skills and (importantly) allowing them to see what the game is like to play. You'll be able to choose from Mario, Bowser, Peach, and Yoshi, and can challenge the "online tournament" as many times as you like. As you advance through the tournament stages you'll earn points based on your performance, allowing you to unlock another five additional characters to play with.
Excitingly, by playing just a single match in the demo (and keeping that save data on your Switch), you'll be able to get your hands on the 'Overalls Mario' costume for use in the full game. This costume is Mario's standard look, rather than his funky little polo shirt outfit, and Nintendo has lovingly provided the following image just in case you'd forgotten what that looked like.
In Japan, the top eight players of this demo will be invited to take part in a 'Mario Tennis Aces Top Players Tournament' on 24th June at the Summer Jisedai World Hobby Fair 2018; whether Europe or North America will receive similar treatment is yet to be seen, however.
Are you excited about Mario Tennis Aces? Will you be taking part in this demo to give the game a go? Let us know in the comments below.

zzzZZZzzz...
I guess you can still unlock the costume without getting the demo?
Weird. It’s so obvious, but I never thought of Mario’s outfit to be overalls. I guess I never thought of it haha
@Appleflap @AlternateButtons My guess would be that you'll be able to get the costume in the main game anyway, but probably through progression in the story mode or similar. This is likely just a way to have it from the start.
The demo's free anyway, though. So hopefully not too much of a problem!
One of the only Mario games I have no interest in whatsoever.
I suck at online gaming in general, but if just for trying they give you an outfit, whether it will be unlockable in the real game or not, it's a really easy and fast thing to do.
There’s also a new 5 minute Japanese trailer out. The story mode looks good.
can't wait for the first now whoo hoo
I was hoping to see how Chain Chomp would play. Probably a heavy type like Bowser?
I love the sound it makes when it smashes the opponents racket.
Can’t wait
I'll give it a shot. It looks pretty good imo.
I don't need to try the demo, this is a day one purchase.
Looking forward to this, not played Mario Tennis since the GameCube version, which I really enjoyed.
I wonder if Mii is also playable.
Was gonna skip demo as I have game preordered anyway but free outfit and such an iconic one and they have me in
Ooh, I'm up for it. This is a day1 buy, the multiplayer is going to be too fun to pass up.
GREAT! Already preordered (£40 from Tesco!) So will really look forward to this. I love Mario Tennis and have high hopes for this one
Nice! I always liked the Mario Tennis series but the lack of a significant single player component in recent entries turned me off from getting them. I will at the very least be giving the demo a try though!
"just in case you'd forgotten what that looked like" this is gold
Aw man I've been really excited for this since it was revealed in January.
@Anti-Matter I would love it if Miis are playable, especially now with the motion control mode.
@RyanCraddock everything is a problem to someone, you know this... 😂
We're probably not getting this one day 1, hoping to be impressed by a new games line-up at E3, but we'll give it a try and see. It does look so much better than the Wii U tennis game we never bought in part b/c the entire game looked like a demo.
2-player tabletop does add a new dimension. OK, it's in my Amazon cart, we'll see how it goes.
Sweet, I'll definitely be partaking! I'm a sucker for alternate costumes (especially ones that aren't just color swaps). I wonder if Yoshi will get one in the full game...
So, for participating, we get to see Mario wearing the same clothing he’s been rocking for the last 80 years? Thanks..?
@Tulio517 Thank you
I be all over this. I will tell friends, neighbours not to knock on door when i'm playing it too!.
@BraveBiT Doesn't seem like the demo has local multiplayer though. Missed opportunity imo
