Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.

For example, competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content, will be covered within the Nintendo Network.

Now I'm wondering if Nintendo is going to rename the 3DS eShop to "Nintendo Network Shop".

No! That sounds boring and unatractive.

I could care less about accounts and all that... the real news here is NFC / near-field communications.

What is it? That tech which allows you to place a device within a few inches of something like a card or other item and have data be transfered instantly. It allows the kind of smart credit cards that can simply be tapped onto a surface instead of sliding with the magnetic strip.

What will Nintendo do with this, now that they are incorporating it into the Wii U controller?

By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world.

Oooh, just think of the possibilities.

Something like those Skylanders figures that transfer data wouldn't need a platform; you'd just tap them onto the Wii U controller for a moment and they would transmit the data.

But more importantly, this opens up a whole lot of board-game possibilities. You could create better hybrid games that use the system alongside real cards or other items, and you wouldn't have to scan these cards or have them recognized by a camera (e-Reader,etc). With NFC, you could just tap the card to the controller in order to initiate an action.

I sure do hope this means more board game ideas coming onto the Wii U, and more interactions that go beyond the television.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

Yeah, tha NFC thing was awesome. One of the coolest things in Japanese arcades are these games where you go and buy packs of cards (a little like Magic the Gathering), and then you take those cards, sit at a table, and put the cards down on the table. That "summons" the unit in the arcade game, allowing you to move them around, strategy style. Then the unit gets experience, which is saved back to the card.

It was freaking awesome fun, and I could see the Wii U doing a whole lot of that.

Japan gets the most awesome toys and tech. Hopefully this new feature is used well, not just by Nintendo, but by ALL developers.

I think it would happen, because the NN is going to be a high layer network that could give several options of services, and the eshop and future shop of the wii U would be just another 2 services running over that network, even Iwata inselft says that

Do you think Nintendo will link our Club Nintendo accounts to Nintendo Network? It would make keeping track of purchases and downloads much easier, especially if your system gets repaired or replaced.

Well they might just rework Club Nintendo into the Nintendo network. Making one location for everything. Don't be surprised if you see any announcements on the site about that happening
