I got dkc 2 with my most recent points card, and I'm worried it was a waste since I can't get past the 3rd stage. There are 2 hooks, one up and to the right of the other. I have no clue how this is humanly (or in this case, simianly) possible. I play with the GC controller, if that helps. Please, help, someone?

GC controller, huh? ssss I usually play VC games with the Classic Controller (I missed out on this game and finally got a chance to play it in 2008), because playing SNES games with a GC controller is quite painful for me. Anyway, I usually hold down the Y button to jump to far off places or just to run fast. Don't know if that helps, but, I figure it's worth mentioning.

Maybe I'll try that the next time I get the chance.

@SonicMaster: You're talking about Gangplank Galley, right? I just ran through that level myself to see what was going on, and sure enough, if you're not holding down the Y button, you won't be able to jump far enough to reach the second hook. With Y held down, though, I hit it just fine. You may want to get into the habit of jumping while holding Y; you'll go farther, apparently. :3

Yeah, the Y button is your friend. Throughout the whole game you should almost always be holding it down unless you let up briefly to cartwheel spin.

I guess it's settled, then. The Y button is your best friend when it comes to action/adventure/sidescrollers/platformers. Take this advice to heart, young SonicMaster.
Regarding DKC2, truly one of the greatest games from the late SNES era, and I cannot believe I missed out on it! I even saw a screen capture of it in a magazine while in elementary school.
