Now speaking as a child of the eighties...In terms of recognition/Imagery, for me personally Mario 2 is what I always picture in my mind when Mario comes up. It's a combination of nostalgic memories and the fact that Mario bros hype was in full force when 2 came out I guess. The merchandising had exploded at that time, and the cartoon was largely based on its world. It's easily just as iconic as Mario 1 to me.

Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan - Lost Levels) are the only ones where I think nothing has been done for the worst when it comes to the mechanics.

Super Mario Bros 3 made it so when you get hit you don't go small even if you were more powered up which I think was a mistake.

Super Mario World did have the best implementation of secret exits but because of it you could re do levels.

New Super Mario Bros introduced Star Coins which spoilt the pace and it just got worse from there.

I don't know which I think is the best out of Super Mario Bros / Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) / Super Mario Bros 3 / Super Mario World.

Probably depends on the criteria used. Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan) has some very minor improvements like the height you get from a jump off a koopa trooper and the other physics for using Luigi.

I do know I think the first DS one is the best New Super Mario Bros game.

It did in the Japanese version.
