The first three are excellent, with MP3 being my personal favourite. The boards are nice and varied, the minigames are a mix of skill and luck, the item shops are great, the character selection is better than the first two, and there's a cool single player campaign. The two player duel mode was also a great addition. My runner up would be MP1, even though it's the most basic game it's still really unique. MP2 I didn't play until after MP3, so it felt like a step back as it had similar ideas, just not as fleshed out. I never really enjoyed what they did with the series afterwards, 4-7 felt meh, 8 was fun when I was younger but bland now, 9 was bad with the weird car, Island Tour was atrocious. MPDS was alright though. Never played Advance, but it sounds like I'm better off for it.

I always liked 3 a lot. I'm thinking to buy 3, 4, and 5 because those are ones I had when I was younger. I'll have to consider some of the other suggestions too!
I'd recommend 2 or 3. The first was good, but games like Pedal Power and Tug O War really bring the thing down, as well as absolutely destroying your hands in the process due to their awful control scheme. Mario Party 4 was a bit bland. And Mario Party 5 can kind of go to hell for bringing 'Get a Rope' to the Mario Party series, because pure luck does not make for a fun experience.
I never played a single one! Always thought it was a kids game at the time thought I was way to old for it being an ancient 15/16 at that stage! I have a N64 and a Gamecube if I was to get one MP game what would ya recommend and which console?
Some of Mario Odyssey is seriously giving heart palpitations.... that plumber is trying to kill me!
@Fifth_Element , Mario Party is a great party game. It is really fun to play with friends, and can suck away hours of time, you should totally get one!
My personal favorite of the series is 7 as I feel it had the most fun boards. Mario Party 6 is pretty good as well.
And for the record, I actually like Mario Party Advance. It was very different from a traditional Mario Party game, but it could be a lot of fun once you got into it.

@DestinyMan 1 and 2 are really similar. There are even remade minigames in MP2.
I think I'd say 2, 3, all the GCN Mario Parties, and maybe 9.
I've played DS (still have it) & I did love it, but it just doesn't stand out as much to me.
As for Island Tour, and Advance, I'm not sure, but I've played a bit of Advance though.

I haven't played it in over a decade but 3 was easily my favorite growing up. 6 is probably the only one I liked even close to as much as the N64 ones though.
@Chrono_Cross , I almost bought MP9, but was a little off put by all of the changes. So you think its a nice fresh addition to the franchise?
Yes. It's definitely one of the best party games on the Wii. Its unique spin on the board formula is refreshing, the boards are vibrant due to its graphical capability and use of the hardware, and it's insanely fun with others. Honestly, most Mario Party games made everyone angry, but 9 kept it fair for the most.
In other words, 9 is what 8 should have been.

The best one, if you can call one of them "best", is Mario Party 3. If you want to invoke the wrath of Ares and bring hate and destruction to all, then the first. Anything after at most 4 is total trash.
