I dont know if ill add games to my SNES. Doesnt seem something Id do successfully and Im a game developer so my stance in that is....well guess.

Edit: Looked it up, it mentions kernel modifications and at that point we go past the "ROMs are okay as back ups maybe" grey area and into straight OS modification, so Im out.

Well, I don't plan to hack the SNES mini, but I did hack the NES mini (to replace one game with another one I actually like, and own physically Castlevania 2 with Yoshi)...

It literally took like three clicks. What the program does is, it first gives you a copy of your original kernel (in case you want to revert the hack) and then replaces it with the modified one.

I guess if I were to hack this one, I would follow the same guidelines... But to be honest, I don't really see a need to do it.

I'll probably keep mine untouched. Maybe see if they do a Volume 2 in the future.

Seeing FFV on that list makes me wish it had come out in the West all those years ago. I actually would've taken it over VI (although I'd miss the GBA translation. It made Gilgamesh... Gilgamesh).

I did play Radical Dreamers once.... I think I beat it (it's been over a decade and I remember that it just kinda..... ended. Then again, it's basically a “choose your own adventure“, so there's probably branching paths). Didn't really think too much of it. Thankfully I don't have to, since it was retconed, and Chrono Cross borrowed a few of it's characters and concepts.

I hope Chrono Trigger comes to a volume 2 though...

I'm just using the hack to do custom borders, I already did replace FFIII (not a FF fan, get over it, lol) with Chrono Trigger. I mean yeah setting everything up is a bit tricky (had a tough time due to tutorials not being 100% precise. >_>) but after all that it's pretty easy. I'm not gonna go overboard with the games, though...just a few swaps/additions here and there.

But yeah, I just want mah anime borders. xD

EDIT: Also, I guess we're okay talking about this, then? Ant/Lz (I forget) did say it was fine with the NES before the SNES version even came out. lol

@Meowpheel Thing is, its that dumping of the kernel I'm not down with.

See, ROMs are already a grey area, and given I don't own any physical SNES games I wouldn't feel good about that, especially from my stance within the industry.

But one thing I will not do, is dump a custom OS kernel to my PC, that's a huge no-no in my book. That will be proprietary software, no matter how you spin, saved to my PC without consent, and as someone who values their job in this industry, this is far down my bucket list, maybe for when I retire in 60 years.

Switch FC: SW-5242-2997-2115

Meowpheel

Well technically, no. Dumping a custom OS to your computer is nothing sketchy. It gets a bit "gray" with gaming consoles, but...

This system already uses linux, which is an open source operative system. It already runs one of those "custom OS" people dump into their computers.

It being Linux means Nintendo's classics modified os is also open source. Like really, you can go to Nintendo's site and download the source code yourself.

If anything, the most clear black and white illegal thing here is adding downloaded roms to the system.

@Meowpheel Unfortunately when you work with game development its a little less "Clear" than "Oh its an open source OS anyway so why does it matter".

Just because the Xbox One OS is Windows 10 means you can dump it on your PC. Just because the PS4 and Switch OS are ALSO Linux forks doesn't mean you can dump those.

Switch FC: SW-5242-2997-2115

Meowpheel

Well, windows is not an open source os as far as I know. If but the PS4 and switch are, then technically they should make the source code available to the public. Do keep in mind that that does not condone piracy in any way.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, you're drowning in the wrong cup.

@Meowpheel I'm not drowning in the wrong cup, I like my job and all potential future jobs thanks

FreeBSD is a fork of Linux. FreeBSD is what powers both PS3/PS4 and Switch. It's free and it's open source. So go ahead. Dump those OS files too.

Difference is, due to the license, which is BSD, people are allowed to modify the code base or base FreeBSD ONLY, and sadly, Switch and PS4, use only the code base, as a starting point, hence how they are vastly different. The thing is, it is based on FreeBSD, but doesn't use it enough.

This is the key difference. They based the OS on Linux, but have turned it into their own thing, hence the TOS mentioning you cant reverse engineer any of it.

Switch FC: SW-5242-2997-2115

Meowpheel

Well then that's cool, they are protected by license.

It's just weird how you were totally considering until the os thing came about. It's a bit arbitrary that a game developer would be totally cool with roms and emulation, but absolutely against os modifications.

So, it's kinda like how a book in public domain can be freely used as the basis for something (another book, TV show, movie, etc), but that something ISN'T free to be used by just anyone (without permission)?

@Meowpheel I'm not totally cool with ROMs. Emulation we cant do anything about, at least not hardware wise, as its not using hardware to directly replicate the experience, its software telling other hardware how to run, in basic terms. Emulation itself is fine.

ROMs however....grey area. You can make the argument that you can back up games you own, but then we get into the new TOS introduced by Sony that says even physical games you only license and cant sell on without consent, so ROMs of any game are technically not owned, even if physically on cart or disc, just licensed to you with strict guidelines to not reproduce/replicate.

But at the same time, there hasn't been a legal precedent for it....yet. Just like Let's Plays have no legal precedent, but under license agreements backing up games as ROMs is...sketchy at best. Not illegal, but not a good look. Now downloading games you don't own? That's a black and white situation right there.

@DarthNocturnal In a way yeah. The OS base is free for anyone to use, as in FreeBSD, but once its modified its protected by license. At least that's what is implied.

An open source OS is like a free to play game. The source is free to do whatever with, see Linux, FreeBSD, Unix etc. but the end result as made by other companies, unless explicitly stated as such, is not.

That's what open source means. The source is fair game.

Ok my Part 2 of Yoshi's Island is gonna be fun to edit...prepare for a fail compilation already. xD

EDIT: Thread randomly died...>.>
Anyways, was this blur effect in the original version of EarthBound? (when you take damage from an enemy) First time I've seen it...never noticed it when I played it elsewhere. (including Wii U's VC)

So heard my local Gamestop was getting a shipment today at Noon. Went down there at 12:15 (my lunch) and they just sold out. This is getting f***in rediculous there is no way they could have been sold out in 15 unless some jackass bought all of them.

I love how Nintendo will go after ROM sites and fan made games but scalpers are ok in their book. F Nintendo.

@BLP_Software Oh I have patience, I just don't like to be jerked around is all. If you are going to say you are going to do something then do it. They said they were going to make it so this doesn't end up like the NES Classic yet it is, and no point in pretending it isn't. I have not seen one anywhere at all except from scalpers online so how is it different.

And yes you can say it's a high demand item but this stuff always happens with Nintendo which means they don't know how to run their distribution channels. I was able to walk in on launch day on buy my PS4 with no preorder. Same with several high profile games. I saw stock everywhere for weeks after launch.

So yeah it's not a lack of patience as you say, just tired of getting screwed over by companies saying what people want to hear and not holding up their end.
