I think Earthbound is a great little game that tends to get overrated to some degree. As a Sega Genesis owner, it kinda annoys me that Earthbound gets all this constant attention and praise while other great RPGs like Phantasy Star IV and both Lunar games on the Sega CD get ignored. I like Earthbound, I think its a fun little game and I do intend to get it again if I ever get a Wii U, but some fans act like its the best RPG of that era.
Its a great game, but I consider Phantasy Star IV, Final Fantasy VI, and both Lunar games to be better games then Earthbound.
At the time it was soemthing that poepl ehad never seen before. a rpg, taking place in an (almost) normal world? even today, i have never seen anythign quite like it, as almost all rpgs are the same today, at least besides story

Hate? Well, why do ya hate it? I'm curious, since so many people love the game to death.
I still have yet to finish it, but I'm definitely liking it so far. The humor's one of the best parts.
I don't hate it, but I found it inevitably boring and plodding, as I find pretty much all RPG's besides Super Mario RPG and the first two Paper Mario titles (I'm just not a fan of the genre).
I did find the small town Americana vibe mixed in with psychedelic sci-fi elements to be pretty unique however.
