Topic: Western (C)RPGs?

Posts 1 to 20 of 37

Alright, I've finally decided I'll try to get into Western RPGs. I've already played Eschaleon Book 1(wonderful game! Best CRPG I've played so far!), Mass Effect, Fable, Jade Empire, Diablo, Dues Ex, and most recently Fallout and Neverwinter Nights(worst one I've played so far. Yuck). Now, most of these game have been enjoyable so far, but asside from Eschaleon, none of them have been able to hold my interests. Being that, until recent years, I have tried my hardest to ignore WRPGs, I'm not exactly in the know on what games are out there, and which ones are generally held in high regard.

So, I thought I'd ask everyone here a quick Q: What are some good western RPGs that are primarily for the PC and aren't based on a licence?

Oh, and NO MMOs!

I checked and couldn't find this topic in this section. It might be in the General Discusion section, but since I'm asking specifically for Computer RPGs, I thought I'd put in the Other Gaming section

A: Two, one to hold the light bulb, the other to rotate the universe.

...it's on Steam, the site you just linked to me.

And a list is great and all, but I'm not about to start throwing my money away willey-nilley, you know. The question was which was are woth buying. I can't tell one way or another just reading a quick description from a site that just wants my money.

Oh wait, you wanted an actual description, didn't you? I forgot I didn't go into much detail in this thread. Anywho, to put it simply, Eschaleon is something of a homage to old-school CRPGs. You roam around, pick locks, fight enemies in a basic turn-based "watch two guys attack eachother until someone dies" format, although I find that a hit & run tactic works best especially if you're a rogue, like I was - all the while trying to solve the mystery of who you are, where you're going, and what happened. The theme doesn't quite feel like I'm in some generic Medieval village, although I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be. All-in-all I enjoyed what I played of it, but unfortunately I've only played a demo so far. I'm still waiting for the price to go down a tad, but it seems I keep missing it every time its on sale.

Regarding Fallout, have you tried the earlier ones or just part 3? All great, and all pretty different from each other.
Oh, Baldur's Gate 2 is pretty great, but it is based on D&D and is a big time sink.

Fallout 1. And I have Buldar's Gate 2, actually, I just haven't had the time to play it yet.

So...does anybody know of any RPGs that weren't made by Bethesda or Bioware? What about Interplay's games? Blizzard's old games before World of Warcraft? Or some indie developers?

I've already marked down all of the interesting ones that Bethesda and Bioware made, but most of them I either have or are too expensive for me right now, and I don't know where else to look.

Torchlight is a pretty fun Diablo clone. It feels fresh since there haven't been many like it on the market. Diablo is an action-RPG. I'll get back to you on some more in a minute.
Also, thanks for the info, the trailor didn't really tell me much.
Okay, the Fallout series has been mentioned, and they really are all pretty different so I'll tell you some others.
-Borderlands is a first person shooter RPG, you may have heard of it, has 4 player coop.
-Elder Scrolls is usually said to be pretty good (might want to look that one up a bit first)
-Guild Wars is an MMO but is free to play and doesn't have that stupid micro-transaction stuff, so when you buy the game, you don't have to worry about buying anything else (other than expansions). It's said to be pretty good, the level cap is 20, so you don't have some kid who plays 24 hours a day beating you with his uber level 200. It's essentailly an RPG with some MMO qualities.
-I heard The Witcher isn't bad.
-Jade Empire is pretty good.

For the most part, they are all fairly similar. I tend to not play many because a lot of them have crappy combat systems (hit the guy, wait 5 minutes to be able to hit him again). They are all about the world they are set in, so if you can't get into it, you just wasted your money because a lot aren't fun enough. For some odd reason, the turn-based combat takes about as long as using a summon every turn in any Final Fantasy game.

I also liked Freedom Force although that one is kind of a niche title. If you didn't grow up with comics, you'll probably not be able to appreciate it.

I think you should give Knights of the Old Republic a chance. I know you said games not based on a licensed property but KOTOR (just finished for the first time last week) was better than Mass Effect and definitely better than Jade Empire. Plus I enjoyed it and I don't really like Star Wars. It's hard to recommend when you already played the best of the best (Deus Ex and Diablo). Torchlight is a very good (and very affordable) Diablo clone worth playing. You might enjoy The Elder Scrolls games as well (the first two are freeware now). The ES's aren't my favorite games but they are still fun to play.

I honestly only mentioned the non-licenced games just so the thread wouldn't get spammed with KOTOR recommendations. It has a robot whom is remenicant of Bender with an odd speech pattern. I'm pretty much guaranteed to buy it someday.

@Ravage

I'd been meaning to get Torchlight for quite some time. I wish I hadn't passed it up durng the holiday sale, but I suppose there's always next year. I was just informed of a demo, so I'll play that for the time being.

Also, while I do have a strict "NO MMOs" policy, Guild Wars does sound somewhat appealing. I'll make sure to keep it in mind.

I recall reading a review of The Witcher, and it didn't sound that interesting to me.

And Jade Empire is indeed good.

@The Fox

Thanks a lot man! That's pretty much what I've been looking for! A CRPG that has a unique setting and charm! Plus, I just checked Steam, and it and its sequel are only $5! And they both have demoes! I can't wait to try 'em!

@Kevohki

To be fair, I only played the demoes of Dues Ex and Diablo. I'll get them both eventually, but money's tight right now.

And thanks for letting me know that the first two Elder Scrolls games were freeware! For a second I thought you ment abandonware, until I found them in the downloads section of the official site!XD I was only interested in Morrow Wind and Oblivion, but hey, what's free is free!

@Infernape1000+Shingi_70

All of those are on my list of "Games to buy when they're cheap and I actually have money".

HK-47 is ten million times cooler than Bender. Get it now!

KOTOR is a good game, but it doesn't work well with new hardware. I had to screw around with some settings to get it un-stuck from this one cut scene, where it would crash.
