I play online sometimes. I've played it so much I'm taking a break from it for a while. As for the map packs, they are so expensive because they sell well at that cost .
If you're really interested, Halo ODST comes with all of the maps plus some new ones.

if you aren't going to play the story mode, get ODST instead... 3 map packs at 800 MSP each are $30, ODST is $60 and comes with all 3 map packs, plus a fourth map pack not yet available on the LIVE Marketplace... plus you get ODST's story mode and Firefight mode which are awesomely fun
And you should hit my gamertag for some online play, I don't play Halo 3, but my brother does, a LOT lol, you could go together on Firefight too if you decide to purchase ODST

I play it occasionally, but mainly with my friends. I don't own the game, but I don't have too; I have so many friends who have the game when I want to play I just ask

The last time I was on, there were about 50,000 people playing social slayer. I used to hate the game, then I gave it another try and started to like it, but after trying so long to get better I started to hate it. Some of the players online are ridiculously good and that is all they play, like a few of my friends who only play that game.
tbh it's basically a dolled-up version of Onslaught (new online mode) it's fun, but has about as much staying power as Onslaught.
@slaptitude - dude yeah--I gotta say I've always been resistant to Call of Duty, citing similar Halo-esque hatred for its seeming-genericness...but damn I can't ignore the "dude this game looks straight amazing" feeling anymore. I bought into the hype, pre-ordered MW2, and am unbelievably jacked about finally getting an FPS on launch and experiencing the multi community. I played a bit of the first and found myself trying as hard as possible to find things I didn't like about it...and it was just a solid, excellent game--nothing not to like. Color me excited.

I don't play many fps and I never was interested in Halo. I don't have xbox live, so maybe that's the reason.

Just get Halo ODST, it's got all the maps, plus a great singleplayer campaign and the epic Firefight mode.
Personally, it's one of my favorite FPSes - it's simple, clean fun with easy-to-learn controls and gameplay, and I never get enough of shooting things in viddy games. Plus, for me, there's no incentive to get good at it, or even try to win, so I can actually have fun no matter what.
