So you want an Xbox One?
Xbox One has the least amount of new features this gen, focusing on pure dual analog gameplay and Kinect (which is getting a second wind due to it's great voice commands).
PS4 has just as many new features (all new features are gimmicks until the industry accepts them) as Wii U, if not more.

The NPD Group defines a core gamer... See Nintendo isn't part of the "hardcore"/core gaming group according to NPD data.

1) Inexpensive. Console price should be within $200-$250 while the handheld price should be within $100-$150. Bundling the two should, of course, offer a cheaper price value.
2) Improved online and social infrastructure.
3) Developer-friendly environment to minimize difficulties of porting.
4) With any "gimmicks" and features that are implemented, Nintendo must have a few games at launch that will successfully capitalize on them like what Wii Sports did for motion controls on the Wii.
5) Nintendo has to diversify their own library and adopt a more progressive software output. Nostalgia factor should be utilized when the time is needed. Nintendo needs to offer new and/or acquired IPs to consumers of various demographics and genre-specific audiences.
6) Improved digital store and membership program. One idea I have is, despite my hatred for the plastic toys, Amiibos could function as coupons with of course restrictions to prevent abuse.
7) I'm going to talk extensively about 3rd party support. No matter what, Nintendo is not going to receive much support from majority of western AAA 3rd parties. Gamers have to realize that PC is now important in the AAA platform scene. PC functions as a "third console" for these developers, so Nintendo is effectively out of that race and those third parties do not need Nintendo to succeed and thrive. That being said, while improving on communications with 3rd parties, Nintendo should recruit partners that align with their personality and philosophies:

A) Nintendo has done an amazing job on captivating indie support. These guys are the future of gaming and showing them overwhelming support will pay off in the long run. Just give them a tab bit more support and offer them capable hardware and Nintendo will receive more indie support, including from those that have sort of dropped support for them like TellTales and Double Fine.
B) I believe that one of Nintendo's core strategies in entering the mobile scene is to recruit new allies. DeNa, GungHo, and Niantic are great starts. Aim for support from other major players like Nexon and Rovio. Nintendo should form partnerships with Google and Amazon since they have been trying to enter the gaming scene for quite some time now and partnership up with these two juggernauts will be revolutionary.
C) Take advantage of Microsoft's and Sony's weakness: Them underestimating and treating the Japanese market as second-tier. Consoles are dying in Japan and Japanese developers and publishers have lost much relevance in the AAA scene within the past decade. Microsoft has a nonexistent presence there and PlayStation ecosystem is no longer as valuable as it used to be due to the PS3 coming to an end, the Vita becoming a legacy platform with no successor planned, and the PS4 catering heavily to the western market. The NX could potentially be a developer friendly multi-platform for both Nintendo and Japanese 3rd parties to increase their flexibility in multiple markets. Major players like Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, and Bandai Namco are essential to have on their side in addition to recruiting smaller players like NISA, Atlus, and Level-5.
D) There are western 3rd parties that I believe will give Nintendo support. Nintendo has a good relationship with Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and WB Games, so recruiting them for support shouldn't be too difficult. Nintendo just has to find a way to not lost majority of there support in the long run. If the Disney partnership rumors are true, then Disney Interactive Studios is going to be one of Nintendo's most prominent 3rd party supporters. Smaller 3rd parties like Deep Silver and CD Projekt Red might join if the incentives are there. EA and Take Two may not be there initially, but at least obtain their sports and licensed titles. Otherwise, Nintendo needs to rebuild their relationships with western 3rd parties in order to get their support.

Nintendo needs to focus on securing 3rd party exclusives and collaborations as they will give consumers more of an incentive of purchasing their hardware than having just multiplats.
