Just checked out dreamcast guys review and it seems like we got a winner. I'm enjoying my time with persona 5, but by no means would I be disappointed if I stopped playing for this. We'll see how I feel on launch day.

Yeah, the reviews are out and it seems like it might be one of the best remasters ever, although some reviews do have issues with the game itself and feel like it has aged.

Has there been any footage or thoughts published about the Switch version though? It seems like the versions reviewed have only been the current gen versions. I pre-ordered for Switch, because it feels like a game I would end up playing handheld, but I am quite nervous that it might end up as another dodgy Switch port.

Hoping it runs as well as nier did. Well find out soon enough I suppose. I also got the switch version, so fingers crossed.

I got the game. Came in the mail today.

The Switch version is very good.

There's a bit of jagged edges noticeable at times, which is expected for most Switch games, but it seems to be using some fairly high quality AA to smooth things over.

It looks very crisp and clean, runs fantastic, load times are fast... and best of all, the game is very fun to play. The action combat works well for this game as a sort of spinoff prequel. I love the battle system. Getting slots lined up is exciting as it's constantly spitting out "No MP use!!!" or "No AP use!!!" or "Limit Break Available!!!", etc. So I go ham with materia spells or special physical attacks when those messages pop up.

Camera controls are well done, a good lock on system, tutorials are good but not overbearing. It's just a quality release through and through.

This game feels built ground up for Switch. Let's just put it that way. You know how games built for Switch always look and run really good, much better than most multiplats? That's what this game feels like. As if Switch was target platform. Whether or not that's true Idk, but the result is the same.

I guess we should be grateful it isn’t a cloud version, but I assume this is a real time rather than turn based game right? And I hear it runs at a mostly consistent 30, so I’ll pass and pick it up on a platform where I can play it in 60 fps or higher.

@JaxonH Nice! Thanks for posting your thoughts, that's good to know. I can't wait to get my copy later in the week. I always wanted to give this game a play, but never got around to buying a PSP.

One of the things I really like about this game is, it feels very similar to Final Fantasy VII Remake, but with one important differentiator.

Remake really aggravated me with its forced slow walking for "cinematic purposes" and integrated in-game cutscenes that would sporadically take control away from the player without any visual indication.

Whereas this game does none of that nonsense. It's either gameplay, or it's pre-rendered cutscene. And there's no mistaking the two. The game never takes control away by seamlessly integrating in-game sequences either. And it makes it so much more enjoyable to play.

I love me games like this that take full advantage of the Switch hardware to produce a game that looks and plays great in both docked and handheld without looking super blurry. Games such as Nier Automata, Persona 5 Royal, Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, Skyrim, Diablo 3, Dragon Quest Treasures, Portal Collection, and of course, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core.

@JaxonH was that ordered through BB? Mine was ordered as a pickup but I kinda wish I chose shipping now if they're shipping early.

Glad to hear it's running well, as I'm jonesing for some ff7. Think I'll be shelving P5R for a good while to play this then.

Ya.

They temporarily sold the steelbook separately for like $10 so I bought an extra just in case, but it arrived in two separate packages so I'm not sure which one it is. The steelbook is gorgeous though. I'm so glad it's a G4 Switch sized steelbook and not a generic G2 disc sized steelbook. As a Switch steelbook collector I had to import for Tactics Ogre Reborn, The Diofield Chronicle, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the alternate version steelbook of Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope. It's so nice when they just release in NA, like Trails From Zero, Persona 5 Royal, Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope v1 and Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core.

Anyways, the game is great and the Switch version in particular is superb. I never would have played the original version of this on Vita... too dated. But this remakester modernizes it quite a bit- visually for sure, but also combat, voice acting and controls.

How are people enjoying the game? I'm on chapter 5, and have done a ton of side missions. About 7 or so hours in.

Magician

I'm a couple hours in. Been playing strictly the side missions. You can feel the handheld trappings of the game design. Launching missions from a hub, mostly tight corridors, sparse background design. But the game looks good in terms of a "glow up" from the PSP version. And I'm a fan of the beat'em up genre, so I feel right at home.

In regards to combat, this isn't as good as Sifu, and yet I feel FF fans shouldn't skip this.

I've enjoyed my time so far.

@Magician
I like it for that very reason. The game design lends itself well to short bursts due to mission structure, and yet at the same time I can binge on a whole slew of missions back to back, or take on the main story. So it works both ways.

I wouldn't expect combat to feel as fluid as one of the most renowned action games of the generation. But for a JRPG, the combat is really fun. I already mastered my Dark Fire, Dark Thunder, Cure and Blizzard Blade, and have found dodging after a combo to roll behind the enemy and land some crits to be quite the viable strategy.

I really do love this game. Not sure it would be quite as enjoyable on a tv-tethered console, but on Switch its right at home. All the best Switch games have portable play in mind where you can hop in, get right into some action, and hop out.

Monster Hunter Rise was built ground up with this in mind. But many PSP/Vita remasters and franchises which started on handheld feel just as good. Be it Persona 4 Golden and 5 Royal, Resident Evil Revelations 1/2 or Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

I'm nearly at the end of the game and it's absolutely great. Honestly though, It just makes me wish the FF7 remake was on switch. I can tell this game is slightly tapered down to run on switch, so why can't FF7 remake? I'm not a tech head, so maybe someone can explain to me. Because I would easily buy a FF7 remake on switch day 1, no questions asked.

@NintendoByNature
I'm fairly confident FFVII Remake will eventually release on Switch 2. While this game was a remakester of a PSP game, the remake was ground up and admittedly would be much harder to run. This game barely pulls it off at 720p. Remake would require extensive work.

But Switch 2? Easy. There's also the fact Sony is ****blocking the game from others as much as their wallet allows them to. Even Xbox is still waiting. But by the time Switch 2 releases and all that nonsense is over with, I'm sure a port will come. Unless Sony decides to make indefinite payments to SE to keep it off other platforms until all 3 are both out and sold as much as they can.

In which case, whatever. I can wait. I'm in no rush. Got more games than I can keep up with as is. And I'd rather wait to enjoy the game with the best entertainment value possible on Switch than get a sub-par experience now. Was gonna play on Steamdeck but the 2 hr battery turned me off

The new OneXplayer2 has a 65 Whr battery (50% more than Deck) with a more efficient CPU and GPU, and will likely run the game for 3-4 hrs at 720p. But it's $1300 for the 2TB SSD 32GB RAM version. And that's the early bird special on indiegogo. Gonna be $1500 if not ordered by end of today...

Was gonna grab one, especially since controllers detach like Switch, BUT (and there's always a "but") the controllers don't have a battery, or gyro, and require the grip to function. If you have to carry a controller grip it defeats the purpose. Secondly, it weighs even more than Steamdeck. Like 15% heavier. And Deck is already a very heavy handheld. I need good battery life, but if it means holding a dumbell while playing, I'll pass. Wait a few generations until they can get weight under 700 grams and controllers that have their own battery and can be used split apart (not as 2 separate controllers, but just without the grip).

@JaxonH that makes sense. I'm just hoping to get my hands on the remake. Love the FF7 series, so if anything, I'll buy it when/if it comes to Xbox to hold me over til a switch(2) version releases. There aren't many games I can sit in front of the TV for, but ff7 remake would potentially be one of them. I've often thought about the steam deck as well, but not sure I wana fork out the cache for it. Might grab one down the road if it has a price drop specifically for games that aren't available on the series s or switch.

Crisis Core on Switch is a monster.

I actually think it looks better than Final Fantasy VII Remake on SteamDeck, even despite being set to high texture and shadow resolution. Basically, I've got settings maxed out on Deck at native 720p, and for some reason it looks blurrier than Crisis Core on Switch. Hair has just as much artifacting as well. Not that it bothers me, its just interesting to note it's not any better in that respect.
