Hi. just wondering if anyone here has any experience of their nintendo switch charging port breaking?

Had the switch for 3 months and it just stopped charging. I have only ever charged it in the dock and barely taken it out with me.

I sent it back to nintendo and they say the pin has been broken with a £179 repair bill!

i tried to explain to them it must be a fault with the unit or dock as I have taken such care of it but they don't care. they said their repair department has made their decision and and I pay up or get it back broken.

So now I'm a but stuck. If the repair was £50 I would just get it done but at 2/3 of the price I paid for it new is just crazy.

Anyone else been though this and have any advice?

Thanks!

@steve07805 Man, that sucks. I feel for you. I wonder how it's even possible to break a charging port. Unless you try and plug in a wrong charger (I don't know, like a regular micro usb or something), I don't see how a consumer would be able to do this. Have you asked about what they think caused it? Maybe try to speak to the repair guyes themselves. I'd probably fight them some more and try to have it fixed anyway. Good luck!

As the unit is faulty and you are living in the UK (based on your £ usage), the shop you purchased it from is actually liable for a replacement/refund, not Nintendo, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Hope that helps

@zitpig That's some good advice right there. I remember how much trouble I had with the red ring of death on my 360, just ended up moving to ps3 in the end. It has to be said that though, that is a ridiculously high repair cost.

@steve07805 I can only assume it was a defect and the pin was weakened to start with. The connector is USB-C, an new durable USB standard with far MORE insertion cycles rated on it than any previous USB standard. It's used on phones, tablets, Switch, laptops, Pro controller, etc. Other than inserting an object into the port, it shouldn't be possible to break it very easily. I can only assume it was weakened or not correctly attached at the factory (not Nintendo's factory but whoever supplies the USB-C connectors.) I would argue this point with them a bit more if willing. USB-C connectors don't "just break" and iPhones and Galaxy phones are subjected to far harsher rigors than Switches in most cases.

@HauntingNostrils Though PS3 Slim had the YLOD to replace the RROD.

£179 for a broken "pin", how is that even remotely reasonable? If Nintendo won't fix it under warranty then take it back to the shop.

Same thing happened to me: 2.000 DKR for fixing a Broken USB-C Port. This is Due to Nintendo not allowing their repair Center to replace the Broken connector, only to replace the entire Unit. Such an approach is totally uacceptable of course given the rather banal Nature of this fault. I am considering fixing it myself, but is not going to be easy.

The same thing just happened to me! I've had the thing maybe 3 months and hardly ever use it. but all of a sudden it won't charge and won't recognize any chargers. I really hope they have good news to tell me tomorrow when I call them. I am always so gentle with mine and have taken it off the dock about 10 times total. This is clearly a problem on their end. this is a defect. A charging port shouldn't just stop working. I am livid right now!

That was Microsoft hardware issue that was caused by Microsoft poor quality check. This doesn't equate to the user problem when using the Dock.

What I find odd is I have 3 Docks and nephews and nieces that Dock and Portable and I don't have your broken charging port. So unless it can be shown or independent verified I doubt this is a Nintendo hardware fault. What is sound more like it's user Docking issues leading to the hardware failure. One can say they rarely take it out but yet whom is going to verify that? I've taken mine out and in the Dock many times but I don't force it in if it doesn't slot in correctly. This is where the user causes the most damage to the port it is spring protected to prevent damages to the Plug in the Dock. If that was the case there would on Nintendo support site FAQ on that subject and various Nintendo sites following stating specific problem Hardware. Just like the screen scratches has more to do with the user not taking time to Dock properly and slowly. Also I have a GripCase on my Switch so that adds more bulk but I can still Dock and charge and use it that way but I also added Temper Glass HD face to protect it more. So most if not many of the reports would seems to point to the user first.

I’ve got this issue. My switch is at Nintendo now. I’ve emailed 2 complaints but not seeming to get anywhere. I’ve not intentionally damaged the charging port. I’ve taken care to take it in and out of the dock. It’s got a screen protector and lives most of the time in the hard case.
Clearly Nintendo have used subsurficiant parts and now are not honouring the warranty. I’ve seen a few forums with people having the same issue. £175 for a repair is a scandal when it’s clearly a fault between the screen and dock.

Did you verify this was a Nintendo repair manufacture not a 3rd party repair?

And I doubt that is a Nintendo charge but a 3rd party charge. If in warranty then it should be fixed but you have to provide them a receipt for Warranty purpose if none presented then they have regular repair rates.

I’m assuming you work for Nintendo Switchforce?
My Switch was sent back to Nintendo via there free post repair service, which to be honest was faultless. I guess they can afford to put on a good service when they are charging customers daft repair costs. My switch was is within the 12 month uk warranty and all receipts and paperwork was provided.

Hi, exact same issue here, My Son got his switch for Christmas and in March it stopped charging, I used the Nintendo return policy to have it repaired and I received an email on the 3rd of May to say the charging port needed to be replaced at a cost of £157, I cannot afford this repair at the moment and especially now the switch is for sale for €280 in Smyths, I paid €384 for it last December. I mean I would practically get a new switch for the cost of the repair. My son is 7 and was very carefull at charging it, I mean he uses my phone all the time and charges it and never had any issues.

Rach 41 I got the exact same email today its obscene let me know how you get on as I'm going to argue this till blue in the face. Has anyone else fought this and won there case and got it fixed free of charge.

You'll likely never prove the damage was due to build quality etc.

From Nintendo's perspective, unless Switchs start falling over all over the world with damaged charging ports (which they're not) then the damage has occurred due to the actions of the user and wouldn't be covered by warranty.

You can't claim on your car warranty if you have an accident with your new car. That's why people get insurance (amongst other reasons).

You guys had me at blood and semen.

GC unit are you for real not falling all over the world you need to get researching this is a huge issue and all Nintendo say is that switch went through rigorous testing to ensure that this issue wouldn't happen. So if that mobile phone that you have in your hand that you have or are paying a lot of money for was 5 months old and wouldn't charge and apple or Samsung or any other major retailer said to you oh you have physically broken the charging point and you know that you have done nothing wrong would you bend over and say yeah OK I will pay you 157.50 for repair no you wouldn't you want it fixed or replaced.

Exactly same problem here, bought Switch for my sons for Christmas but by April it had stopped charging. Just sent it back for repair and got an email to say the repair would be £157. Rang to see if I could try and reason with them but the guys English was very limited and all he kept asking was if I wanted to pay. In total frustration I told him to just send it back to me. Trading standards look like getting a phone call as Nintendo are obviously not interested. Just make sure we all give it the review it deserves on all the relevant sites!!!
