I was checking and IRN-BRU was banned in the USA untill recently due to it containing a colouring that was banned. Here's a breif description i have copied and pasted to describe this taste sensation
Invented in 1901 Irn-Bru is a household name in Scotland but it’s fame has spread across the world. The formula for Irn-Bru is a family secret known only to two people in the company with a written copy held in a Swiss bank deposit box. To meet regulations on food coloring in the US the dye had to be substituted with a dye acceptable to the FDA. Consequently Great Scot International imports the ONLY Irn-Bru that meets FDA approval.
Irn-Bru is also unique in that it is NOT made with High Fructose Corn Syrup but with NATURAL cane sugar.
How does it taste? Again - unique - best described as citrussy- vanilla very refreshing
No one has tasted hot ginger ale before?? And no, I'm not talking about it being un-refrigerated. Spicy-hot.
I believe you're thinking of ginger beer -- at least that's what it's called here and in the Caribbean where it seems to have originated (or at least is the soft drink of choice).
My Yanqui beverages would be root beer (something nice like IBC, Stewarts, Sioux City -- Henry Weinhardts at a stretch) and cream soda (what they call cream soda in the UK is vile).
In the UK it has to be Irn Bru, original and best, or Rubicon -- any flavour, though Lychee and Guanabana are my favourite -- (also owned by AG Barr) which has %5 real tropical fruit juice in every can!
I see, it is indeed similar to Ginger Beer, although they just call it Ginger Ale down here in the US South (although usually with some tagline, like Old-Fashioned Ginger Ale or Spicy Ginger Ale or, the one I drink, Southern Spiced.) But yes, essentially a ginger soda that contains enough potent ginger to actually have a pretty strong kick to it.
@Sean Aaron - Indeed Rubicon is a fine drink, Passionfruit is my favourite, also nice to see another IRN-BRU fan. You are also correct about cream soda being vile especially with Ice-cream in which is how people have it.
Another piece of Scottish pop trivia for you - In Scotland (Glasgow at least) pop is called ginger
@Sean Aaron - Are you originally from Scotland by any chance as your name sounds like a Scottish name, mainly the spelling of Sean?

I'm aware the term ginger can refer generically to fizzy drinks, but I cannot say I've ever heard it used in Glasgow. Sadly you'll more commonly heard it referred to generically as "juice" which I find appalling.
American cream soda with a nice strong vanilla flavour is excellent. I would recommend IBC, Stewarts or Henry Weinhardts -- the latter has a nice foamy head on it.
I am actually not from Scotland and have no British ancestry at all that I'm aware of. My mother was a big Sean Connery fan back in high school is all. I do think Glasgow is an awesome city, though!
Oh, and I have seen Irn Bru in the States at a shop that sells Scottish imports in Jack London Square in Oakland, though I don't know if it still exists.
@Sean Aaron - Just checked your blog and seen you are a American living in Glasgow which strangely is the opposite to what i had assumed. My dads side of my family are all from Govern (home of Rab.C.Nesbitt) and when i have visited anybody there i am always asked "Would you like a glass of ginger", so possibly its just Govern dialect.
Have you had the chance to sample any of Glasgows fine cuisine yet such as a battered Mars bar, battered pizza or a bottle of Buckfast.
There are some interesting facts about Buckfast and Glasgows "Buckfast Triangle" but i will save them for another day.
What is wrong with you fools! Clearly Fanta is amazing. I love all the pretty colors and fruity flavors. It's awesome and it doesn't super-caffeinate you like the others.

I assume you mean "Govan" .
I don't drink, so I cannot say I've tried Buckfast, but I know it by reputation. Neither have I tried the other two items, though there was a chip shop in Stirling that sold pizza and chips: little frozen pizzas deep-fried. I have no idea why anyone would eat that!
I prefer vanilla cream soda -- A&W is good stuff. other than that, and the occasional Pepsi (i can't stand Coke, it's got too much of a cinnamon-y taste IMO), I don't really drink much in the way of soda. just water or unsweet tea for the most part.
