It actually holds the world record in the Guinness Book of World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008 for the most collectable items in any platform game, at 3,821 items.

Disney Infinity could be considered a collectathon. A fairly good one too.

I wouldn't consider Mario 64 or Mario Sunshine "collectathons." 64 Had you collecting stars over the course of the game, each of which was obtained at the end of a level with a clear, platforming-based objective. The only other thing you collected was red coins, but those were relegated to one mission in each level, not gathered across the course of the game.

There was one star per course for 100 coins as well, so that's 15 stars for red coins + 15 stars for 100 coins + 8 of the castle secret stars are for collecting red coins, that's 38 of the 120, not a small number at all.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!

I thought that was only in the DS version? EDIT: Nope, they were in the original. Crud, you know how much pain that could've potentially saved me if I knew I could get stars from collecting coins?! I never would've had to touch Rainbow Road.

I'm not sure what a collectathon is or isn't... but since you're not talking about them, LEGO games apparently aren't examples of them.. but why not?

Honestly, I keep forgetting the Lego games exists. Like, I own a couple of them. I should probably play them again someday.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally got burned out on the entire genre. Frankly, I'm still a little burned out on that genre, a couple of Mario exceptions aside, and as much as I still hold a lot of affection for Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, it's not like either of those games were without some significant flaws or avoided the occasional allure of obsessive collecting. Too many games during that era of gaming just used the conventions established by Mario 64 and Rare to massively pad out game length in ways that often required little to no skill or engagement on the player's part aside from maybe a certain zen patience for monotony, so that most of the genre ended up being a grand exercise in soulless drudgery starring blander mascot characters.

Granted, some of that is just that I'm also a much older, more cynical gamer with different tastes than I did back then. As much as I enjoyed DK64 at the time (loved, even), the very thought of playing it through to 100% or even spending more than an hour with it again makes me a little queasy.

The dev who was responsible for the DK64 collectables also agrees, DK64's collectables were discussed in the Playtonic Games event at EGX Rezzed which was streamed.
