I've been tempted to write a few fan fictions over the years(mostly DBZ related, although a story based on Subspace Emissary in Brawl was also something I had) but I just decided to write my own original stuff. I have no problem with Fanfiction if they treat the source material with respect, and don't disrupt the established canon of the series.

The problem is that many fanfictions often become wish fulfillment stories(A newly created character is in love with a main character), will break established character relationships(Goku is married? Screw that, my newly created character will change that!), make their characters way too perfect compared to the canon ones(Mary Sue), will write canon characters with massive shifts in their personality and behavior that makes no sense at all. Of course, the worst ones are the ones that ignore the existing storyline, backstory, and even the world, and put the characters into a storyline where they don't belong(I once read a Vegeta and Bulma fanfic where they were starcrossed high school students. Anyone with a passing knowledge of Dragonball can the problem with that idea right away.)

I don't hate fanfiction, but all too often it becomes a fantasy fulfillment for fans who want to "fall" in love with a character or want to put put themselves into a world. or people who want to create their own story, but rely on an established group of characters as a crutch even if their ideas don't mesh with the story they want to write.

I can respect people who want to write fanfiction because they love a series. Trust me, I've been tempted to write a few DBZ fanfics over the years. The only thing that kills it is when people turn their stories into something that wrecks the world and characters they are supposed to be in love with.

I think I already posted in here some time ago, but after reading this comment, I think you nailed my feelings on the matter better than I ever did. Wonderfully put.

I'm personally not as strict as you, when it comes to fan fiction strictly following canon, as long as the changes they make are still believable based on the canon representation of the characters' personalities.

Lets say, in canon, a character has two possible love interests, and chooses love interest A. I wouldn't mind a fan fiction revolved around them choosing love interest B instead (just give a good reason why they didn't choose A like in canon, maybe they died in this story, and I'll be willing to believe they chose B in this alternate world, since that possible outcome has roots in canon material). Don't however, have them choose character C, D, or E, who they may have hated, only been acquainted with, or were indifferent to in canon (that completely breaks a character's canon portrayal, and isn't slightly believable to that world whatsoever).

I also agree with you on the stories that take characters completely out of their element (your example: Vegeta & Bulma being high school students). No, that's not fan fiction. That's your own completely unrelated story that you slapped well known names onto so people will read it.

Depends on the fan fic. Some are good, some are terrible, many are inbetween the two extremes.

I also don't particularly mind if some fan work messes around with 'canon' either, since sometimes the effects of doing so can be extremely interesting. Not to mention the most fun fan games and things I've played diverged significantly from the source material...

So I'm fine with fan fic and fan works in general.

Depends... I like my fan fiction to be in the spirit of the source. Don't mind shipping, despise porn (why does 50 shades of grey represent the fanfic community ) I adore the 'badfics' like full life consequences and my immortal, I find them most amusing. I also like alternate universes...

@DiabolicalSoup9 It's worse in the furry fandom, believe me. Sonic is a pretty good example of fandoms ruined by porn fanfics, or just awful fanfics in general.

This is one of those cases where it's better to use quotes so people know what you're talking about, because I've been skimming this entire thread, and I have no idea where pornigraphic fanfictions about Sonic suddenly entered the conversation...

I did find this:

The Sonic fanbase is particulary prone to high school stories. It makes me feel ashamed and dirty when I say I'm a Sonic fan. Oh well, at least it's the moronic fans' fault, not mine.

(...Which I still don't quite get. what's so bad about a high school fanfic compared to other fanfics? Yes, high school drama is annoying, but I've certainly seen far worse things out there than that. In fact, if done right, they're potentially hilarious, which is why those scenarios are sometimes used in parody manga)

But other than that, I don't think I've seen much mention of Sonic here. Or, you know, that other stuff...

Fan-Fiction is hit or miss. It's either really good or really bad.

And it isn't exclusively made for shipping stories, so stop pretending it is. If you haven't found a Fan-Fic that isn't about shipping/romance, you clearly haven't looked for it... which raises a peculiar question when you think about it. "Oh, Fan-Fiction is stupid. It only has romance stories. W-What? How do I know? U-Uh..."

I myself that is in a Hetalia fandom, although abound with a lot of romance stories (and I hate those Reader or OC character paired with Canon character), has a lot of very well-written fanfictions that definitely explore the effect of the characters have.

You can check them out here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanficRecs/AxisPowersHe...

Most of them are garbage. Seriously, many of these "writers" can't even tell the difference between "your" and "you're."

It's hard to free fools from the chains they revere.

You know, it's strange of me, but I very rarely found the fanfictions that interest me... tend to be either epic-length, or they have good plots and grammars that I don't mind reading again in the future. :3
