I personally hate them. They just either come off as so horrid that they're laughable, or they're just plain awful. I have read a couple of pretty good ones, but it's pretty frustrating to have to dig through a ton of crap to find those few good ones.

I never really liked them, if only because you can tell that there's a reason the artist didn't go the direction that the fanfic writer went.
If it's done by the creators, though, I love it. Yeah, it's not a fanfiction then, but it still feels like it. An example is in Fire Emblem Awakening. It's basically a fanfiction that writes itself, what with the ability to marry whoever you want of the opposite gender and having several choices for other people, all with the writing quality being consistent.

I don't care for it. They're either poorly written, have the characters act out of character, or aren't even related to the series it's supposed to be a fan fiction of (like they write their own completely unrelated short story, then slap on names of well known characters, just so people will read it).

There is the occasional gem, but they're not worth digging through the other stuff.

if i'm trawling FF.net for something to read, i usually set the filters to show only 'complete' stories of 50,000 words or more, and perhaps to show characters and genres i'm interested in at the time. that tends to cut down most of the crap while i'm digging for a gem. if it's a series or a game i'm really, really into for some reason, i'll usually check and see if there's anything interesting fanficwise.

I tend to explore fan audio dramas instead, but that's a minefield, too. Except for the awesome ones I participated in...

Man, that sounds terrible! You say there are good ones to enjoy, but a lot of what's out there is less than stellar?

I'm so glad that it's not the same case with books, music, TV, film, games, clothing, cars, homes, food, people, places or things. It'd be a nightmare!

Fanfic for games tends to be very poor, I've found. Very few games have large enough creative fandoms to the point where several talented writers contribute their efforts to a fic. Shows such as Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Supernatural have lots of fans that like creating fics and art, so there's some quality stuff out there.
As for the question, I don't really like fanfic a whole lot because it's basically just literary porn, and it is somewhat difficult to find good fics. But it gets kids to write, so I can't complain about that.

"But it gets kids to write, so I can't complain about that."

As a kid, I wrote awful Batman, Godzilla, and Three Stooges stories, sometimes combined. In notebooks, as internet was unheard of sci fi back then. I got props from friends and relatives, and phony or not, I felt good. Though other kids probably, foolishly thought the stories were legit cool. Good times.

I used to draw these little Mario comic books. Fun way to pass time while I was waiting for the next Mario game to come out. But if you go on tumblr, the amount of quality fan fiction and fan art is just mindblowing.

As someone who writes fanfiction (have taken a break on them, but hope to get back to writing them later on during this year), I'll say that yes I like fanfiction. There are actually plenty of good ones, it's just that you have to weed out the good from the crap (and I've read plenty of both). It's a lot like Youtube...if you catch my drift. Writing them constantly actually improves your writing skills and is awesome practice for aspiring authors. Just realize that you have to take criticism and be open-minded as a writer, because how will you improve otherwise?

Now that I think back on it, I was writing a Smash Bros fanfic back when I was on MyIGN. I only ever got the first two chapters done though. From what I remember, people actually liked them though, so you could probably still find them there (I know my account is still active, since I occasionally get a new follower for some reason, even though it's been over a year since I was last there).

Oh God, where to start...

For one thing, I always wonder how much of a "fan" the people who write that stuff are. They seem to miss a lot of big things about the world, story and characters that they're using, let alone the subtleties. I can't read a fanfiction without screaming in my head, "that character would never do that!!!" or "That shouldn't be able to happen!!!" It makes them so frustrating.

On the other hand, even if the writer has the skill to write something good and interesting, I still feel like their talent is being put to waste. Why not create something original if you're that good? I have the same problem with fanart, too - why waste your talent on other peoples' works instead of focusing on your own unique works? Isn't far more satisfying to create something that came solely from you? I've seen far too much talent wasted on what is essentially copying, and not enough on creating something new. Is it really that hard? I just don't understand it one bit...

I could go on and on, but I think you get my point: I don't like fanfiction. Not one bit.

I don't even read fanfics. I find them to be stupid and a waste of time..
