Basically the thread for all things Fire Emblem, both new and old.
Now then, I have a question. After playing Awakening I've been wanting to get more into the series, but of course almost every previous game has crazy high prices, even used copies.
However I have discovered a like-new copy of Shadow Dragon (one of the cheapest of previous titles) on eBay, with a decent price of around $30, free shipping, seller with great ratings and all that stuff. But I have heard a lot of controversy over this game, so should I get it or not? I mean, I can wait to see if any will be rereleased as VC, but if possible I'd like to start a "new" one sooner then later.

I would highly recommend the GBA game simple titled Fire Emblem if you're looking to play more games in the series. I got it for around $20 so it's not terribly expensive and it will last you a good while. I'm also playing Path of Radiance for the Game Cube right now and it's quite good, though a tad more expensive, but it's worth it.
As far as Shadow Dragon goes, I hear it's good, it just doesn't have as many features as some of the newer games so it feels like a step back.

I thought about Fire Emblem (GBA), but I want to wait until the GBA VC comes and see if it is among that list. Same for Sacred Stones and (if GC games are announced to be ported to Wii U) Path of Radiance.

I never finished Shadow Dragon. I reccomend getting Radient Dawn, fantastic game. I played the crud out of it. If you are going to get Path of Radience get that first, but I reccomend Radient Dawn.
To ease you into the traditional FE gameplay, I'd say get Sacred Stones first. It has much more in common with Awakening than any other FE in the US. The map makes it possible to grind characters, there are branched premotions instead of set teirs, and a nice variety of map designs. SS is the best bridge between Awakening and the older titles.
Get PoR before RD. PoR is a great standalone game, RD is the godly expansion pack.

You have the right to disagree with me and the ability to consider anything valid that I say; Please exercise both.

I think that is what my plan will be, if of course those games will be VC at some point...

Does anyone else think that Fire Emblem: Awakening strayed too far from the FE formula? I thought the game was desent fun, but it didn't feel like Fire Emblem.
Don't count on it. I watched Ebay avidly to get my copies. I was able to get both games for about 40$ each with manuals. (I didn't get the original case for RD unfortunately.) Also, when you buying RD ask about if it the GC data carryover bug was fixed. Otherwise you need to delete the easy save files from PoR to get the bonuses.
You may want to skip shadow dragon at such a high price friend. SS is unlikely to come out on VC due to it's ambassador-ness, but no promises were made for WiiU, so it is possible. I'd still suggest SS for your case though.

I don't think Awakening strayed too far from the formula, it just updated it a little. I think they did a great job of making it more accessible to new players, but also adding in new features to the series. I don't know, but I really enjoyed Awakening.

Wonderful news! I was at Origins Game Fair today, and got Fire Emblem (Blazing Sword), Sacred Stones, and Shadow Dragon, all with their original cases including manuals in very nice shape (Sacred Stones even still has all the extra advertisements and such), for a total of just $65!
But now, what should I play first?
P.S. is GBA save data tied to the cartridge or the console? Since I'll probably want to replace my rundown pink DS Lite that I got with a friend.

@WingedFish
That's great news man! I hope you enjoy playing the games. Really you can play them in any order you like so don't worry too much about that.

I decided to go by order of release, aka FE7, SS, SD, and ending with another go at Awakening since I don't have the Radiant games. So yeah, two chapters in (started with Eliwood's story) and already a big slap in the face. Certainly no hand-holding here. One of the axe guys (don't recall his name) died by the second chapter and I got game over on the third chapter since Hector (that's right, freaking Hector) died. And this is on NORMAL!
Nonetheless, I shall push on! It's time for my FE marathon to begin! /puffs out chest

Ugh, I think Awakening spoiled me, a lot. Blazing Sword is just handing my rear end to me. I've lost more then five people (two on one Chapter I might add!), must have missed (or killed) at least several recruitable units, and have only reclassed Canas. Not to mention I accidentally skipped half the game because I started with Eliwood's story (am only on Chapter 25 no less) instead of Lyndis'. And this is on NORMAL!
Man, I shudder to think how badly I'll do when I eventually get Radiant Dawn. Heck, I haven't even touched Sacred Stones yet.
Also, just for a change of pace I played the first few prologue chapters of Shadow Dragon and...yeah I see why it isn't well liked (man those 3D models are hideous)... I'll still play it though.
