This is an All-encompassing comics discussion topic, covering comic books, comic strips, and western graphic novels. Got news about the olatest Comicbook you like? Feel free to post it here. Want to talk about the latest strip you read? Want a recommendation on what Graphic Novel to read? Why not ask here? Anything comic-related is welcome here.

Please Note:

  • If you're gonna talk about a spoiler, please use bolded spoiler tags around the spoiler-filled text (i.e. She's Pregnant! ) so as not to ruin things for others.
  • Do not over-do it with the embedded images, especially if they might be a spoiler. In the case of webcomics, link to it if you can instead of embedding.

Other than that, have fun.

I'll start with two simple questions: What's your favorite comic? (format is up to you) And what have you been reading recently?

To answer my own question: My favorite comic is VG Cats. For those that don't know it, it's a video game parody comic featuring anthropomorphic cats. It has a tendency to be rather vulgar at times, but overall, I find it to be one of the most consistantly entertaining comic that often has me laughing aloud. Sure, it doesn't update very often, but I usually pass the time by rereading the archieves (I've done so no less than 10 times by now).

And yes, I prefer comicstrips, especially web-based ones.

I'll talk about what I'm reading in a bit - I'm still reading it right now!

Amongst my favourite webcomics are Homestuck (thanks, Tyson), Paranatural (wacky kids with superpowers, along with nice art, funny dialogue, and an intriguing world and plot; it's one of my top favourites), Ava's Demon (I can't explain the story without spoilers, but the art is some of the best I've seen in a webcomic), and Monster Pulse (kids with detached body parts as monster companions; well developed characters, and I just love how the plot can go dark so easily without it being jarring or staying that way permanently).

Speaking of comics, I have to remember to try to pick up Sandman if it's finally available at my library. I love Neil Gaiman's work, so it's kind of disappointing to see someone else having already borrowed the first volume already.

Before I click the link, I must ask, does Homestuck use gifs very frequently? Because I'm pretty sure I could find that very irritating very quickly. I just want to know that beforehand.

@Irysse Paranatural sounds very interesting. I'll have to see if I can set aside some time to read it. Ava's Demon also looks intriguing, though I must ask: is there any dialogue? The scant few strips I saw were all silent.

I've also been meaning to check out Sandman. It's been recommended to me several times. I can't recall whether or not it's a superhero comic (I usually don't like those, with only one or two exceptions), but I have a feeling it wouldn't matter that much either way. I coulda sworn my library has it. Maybe I'll give it a go once I'm done with my current readings.

@Sony_70 - Just to reiterate, please make sure any pictures you post aren't spoilers. I don't think any of those in your current post are, I'm just asking for you to be careful in the future.

Those are all from the preview pages so no spoilers.

Sandman is mostly self containted with it crossing into the proper DCU only a few times here and there. (That and DC pretty much only uses those charcters when gaimen is writing them or its a really good story like the death/lex luthor/green lantern story called the black ring".

Uhh... frequently? Err... there's a lot of small gifs... Depends on what you would find "irritating" about them.
And it's hard to get a sense of "frequency" with as long as HS is.

@Sony
I can agree with New Frontier being good. I don't read too much in terms of Superhero comics, but that one stands out to me in excellence.

I find Gifs distracting when I'm trying to read something, especially comics (moving ads on Comic sites usually annoy the hell out of me if they're visuable while I'm trying to read a strip).

Well, most of the time, either the gif is something minor with text, like an object flying from left to right, and then it a couple seconds of pause before the loop. They don't really interfere IMO.
The full motion gifs, like with constant movement? You won't need to focus on one or the other. Don't worry, it works out.

Another thing you may or not know; Homestuck is completely Narrative driven. Unlike comics like VGCats and BitF, it's a story rather than individual 'strips'.
In fact, it doesn't even use "strips". Pages most often consist of a single panel.

Also if it helps, the gif I posted isn't actually in Homestuck. Most gifs aren't like that in the story. (Constant motion and what naught)

Okay, I might want to check it out then. BTW, I read a lot of Narrative-driven webcomics, It's the best part of reading comics on the web. Though I'll admit, most of them are obscure, and their nature makes them hard to simply pop in every week and read just the latest strips. I certainly like that kinda thing, at least.

I go through comics like water. If I can get through 10 years of Penny Arcade in a little over 2 weeks, I think I'll be fine with 6000 pages, especially if each one isn't that long. I'll probably be done with it before the end of the year if I like it that much, maybe 3 months if I power through it.

@CanisWolfred No worries, dialogue does appear later, though Chapter 1 has the least dialogue out of all the current chapters.

That comic series with Miles Morales is pretty neato.

I hear the ultimate line as a whole has become really good since its doing its own thing and is now radically different than the 616 universe.

So anyone reading any of the DAC digital comics?

Untitled

They're weekly digital comics that are $0.99 each.

Only reading the smallville one myself but the one based on the injustice game has been well received as well as the one based on the batman beyond universe.

Also if you want a crime comic try out blue estate and fatale.

Yesterday I found out that the creator of the first webcomic I ever read died in August 2011. I can't believe I didn't find out until recently...that's a real bummer. I mean, I stopped reading his comics a year before he died, because I didn't like the direction it was going despite it being "the story he really wanted to tell," but still, he never got to finish his story, among a lot of other things. I never really knew him, never spoke to him, and I only know anything about his personal life from his rant section on his website, which isn't the best place to get a clear picture of how a person is like...but still, he inadvertantly affected my life in a way no one else did. I was introduced to webcomics through his website, both through his own comic and others - his was a kind of comic I had never seen before at the time, and it had elements that really appealed to me like I doubt many others could've at the time. It was story-based while still being entirely comical, comical without being totally absurd (ch. 1 aside...), and still had a story and characters I could get invested in. It wasn't a great commic by any means, mind you, but for my introduction to webcomics, it was more than good enough for me. However, the real kicker is that he had a link page full of comics that I may not have found on my own, and many of those were really good. In the end, it helped me recapture and refocus my dream of writing my own comic, by making me realize I could use the internet as a medium, which I had never thought of before. I mean, sure, I probably would've found out about webcomics eventually, and then I'd have someone else to thank for introducing me to them, but it wasn't anyone else. It was him. And I really do owe him a debt of gratitude, and I'm really sad to see that he's gone for good.

I was really into the DC cross over stuff prior to The New 52 (Blackest Night and Flashpoint specifically). But ever since the relaunch, I've only really picked up Wonder Woman, The Suicide Squad, and occasionally Supergirl.

The new Captain Marvel series is progressing nicely, and so is the new Hawkeye line too.

^The new Captain Marvel series is quite good; i've always liked Carol as a character, and the new series is really doing her justice.
On the female-hero front, i picked up the first ish of Fearless Defenders, which looks like it should make for a good series (for those who don't know, Fearless Defenders is basically an all-female hero book, a "non-team" so to speak, headed by Valkyrie and Misty Knight. The "non-team" will be adding and rotating members throughout, which brings me hope that my favorite Patsy "Hellcat" Walker will pop up sooner or later )

On the DC front, though i haven't been big into DC since the 90s, i dd check out some titles since the universe-reboot (specifically Superboy and Catwoman but didn't stick with them. Currently the only DC titles i get are Batwoman (awesome) and Smallville (since it's outside of regular DC continuity).

She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.
