Topic: Annoying thing about Gamestop

I have a similar situation. I bought a new copy of Retro Game challenge but it was the display copy which meant that it 3 different price stickers all over the case. I find that very annoying and presentation is everything, so I look to buy new games elsewhere. I do reserve titles at Gamestop because they leave the stickers off, and I do pick up Nintendo points cards there.

I typically don't buy used games there anymore. I picked up Mario Party 4 used and the game had so many scratches it looked as if it had been in a blender. That forced me to return it. I do shop at Gamestop but at times I have had some negative experiences.

Gamestop is a complete and total joke. In no case should anyone ever waste even a moment in their establishment. If you wanna buy retail, go to larger retail stores that won't fingerprint-rape your discs and sell you used copies as new. If you want to actually save money and not deal with attitude-ridden douches that spend all day playing Madden 2010 and one random FPS they've decided is god's gift to gaming, go to Amazon.

Gamestop employees in Austin are straight busted. Especially [REDACTED] manager [REDACTED] with [REDACTED] that looks like [REDACTED].

EDIT: LOL, Swerd, but still... a little too personal.

@Swerd_Murd well, SOMEONE doesn't like Gamestop . I've actually saved money at gamestop before. Paper mario TTYD was $20 new there, and $35 new at other retail stores. Gamestop also has accesories for cheaper. You know, if you all are dissatisfied, then call the manager, or just return the item.
BTW Swerd_Murd there's no need to insult the manager. What did he do to insult you? People nowadays are so harsh....

Just let it happen.

@110 - he sold me a copy of Deadspace Extraction, already scratched. I came back in to return it (After getting home and seeing the scratch) and he wouldn't take it back.

When I got back to the store, a woman was asking him about Rockband. "Hi, excuse me, do you guys sell Rockband here" "Yes." (dismissively). "Oh...OK...well what should I get" "Depends on what you want" (more dismissively). "Well....I have a Wii, does that help" "There is more than one Rockband on the Wii" (pre-empted by a sigh).

Woman looks uncomfortable for a second, and after 5 seconds of silence, [EDIT - friendly!!!] [EDIT - POWERFUL!] manager [EDIT - bundle of joy!!!!!] walks away from her and goes into the back.

Woman is visibly insulted and leaves. When he comes back, I ask to return the game due to pre-purchase scratch due to their method of sale. I am denied. At this time, I insult his invisible [EDIT - definitely not genitalia...] and leave.

And I'm never going back. And yes I hate Gamestop-there's no reason not to.

There have been times where I have struck up some good converstation at Gamestop. When I bought my DS and Order of Ecclesia the two staff members where more than happy to talk about how great the game was and give me tips. Another time when I bought Fzero for the GCN, I attempted to strike up a converstation and the staff person would have none of it. It was like I was standing there invisible

My bad experiences w/Gamestop:

One time I got metroid prime used(for only $2) and when I brought it home and put it in my wii, it said the disc could not be read. So I took it back, got another one, and the same thing happened. I returned that game about 6 times before I finally got one that worked. Makes me wonder if they kept giving me the same games over and over.

I bought Zelda:PH there(used), and I had it on my original DS for months and it worked fine. Then my cousin bought it(new) and the game cart looked different. Mine looked like the case, with linebeck's head cut off. Some time later, my DS's hinges completely broke apart. So I got a DSi, and put in my 4th favorite zelda game, and it could not be read. It worked fine in my cousin's DS lite, so it made me wonder if it was a bootleg copy. (do you think gamestop would let me return it a year later?)

For my B-day, my dad got me WSR and an extra WM+. Guess where he got it for $5 more the the SRP? I guess it's not really my problem since he bought it, but I feel bad that he got ripped off by gamestop.

Went to buy Phoenix Wright: AA, they put PH:JfA in case. Bought Mario Superstar Baseball(in another city), they put some cheap game called Madagascar in the case. Almost drove off before I realized.

I learned from my experiences, and grew stronger. Remember: Always check the case to make sure the game they put in is the right one.

I really feel sorry for you. Samuelthegeek covered this. I'm actually surprised my Gamestop has yet to do that crap.

Let's hope when I get New Super Mario Bros. Wii that when I trade in two games that you can trade to get a game for $15 that they will actually do it.

Sometimes I wish they would just engage people in some conversation about the games they are buying. I know they may not always be interested in the games I buy, but it really does enhance my shopping experience. When I bought New Super Mario DS the girl behind the counter raved about the game, and I was excited about my new game because of her recommendation. Without a doubt it makes a difference in customer service.

@Swerd_Murd I eat my words. You have full right to insult him. What kind of a manager is he?!
I've had some great conversations at gamestop, and one time, an employee pulled out the official 2010 list for games, complete with dates [for some] Needless to say, I stayed about 30 minutes longer than planned. [I had to leave because my Dad was getting impatient.]

That's why I love Goo Gone. It takes them off without a problem.

@The+Fox that stuff is great. When I was younger, I loved putting stickers on my DS, and that stuff took it all off so I could turn it in to get $50 toward a DSi.

Oh, when I bought FFX, there was a new guy, and he was very enthusiastic. He was saying how awesome it was, and how(with a $15 price tag) it had enough gameplay to be worth $50. It is a good completely awesome game.

Once I asked another employee for a classic controller. He said all these things like "It's not worth it, and I don't like the way it feels in my hands. You should just buy a wireless gamecube controller.". So I got home, bought SMW(my favorite childhood game), and tried playing it with the GC controller. Need I say anything else?

EDIT: I still have my GC controller, and use it for all my GC games. I also have a classic controller which I use for all of my VC games.

goo b gone rocks. Well ,except when your project at work is getting all the 2 year old sticker residue off a few hundred square feet of wall space....but to be fair I was getting paid the whole time So glad I quit that job...

Yeah I'm admittedly VERY biased, but as I think 110 pointed out, it's justified . There is literally no way I could've had a worse experience with a store--esp. since I've been in line when some whiny kid's dad "makes the store submit" and return a 1 week old game that the kid simply didn't like. Just because I'm under the age of 30 and didn't spawn some bobblehead idiot that can't read store policy doesn't give you the right to refuse refund of a game your grubby sausage-fingers scratched on the way into the box.

Actually ended up taking it to Walmart...and telling them I bought it there.....and guess what? They gave me a new copy--no receipt. Granted, the employee was...well let's be nice and say "ditzy"

Moral of story--Gamestop may be decent/good in some places, but Lake Creek Rd. location in Austin? Gaming equivalent of herpes.

Swerd_Merd, I am sorry for your experience and all, but I'm even sadder that I arrived at this thread too late to read your original (unedited) descriptions of the manager.

It probably depends on who is working at the location. Not all gamers are cool people, there are a lot of snotty gamers out there.

My Gamestop never sells used games as new ones... all copies are always sealed and the display boxes are sealed, too. The simple solution: They just put them behind a locked glass door. So people can look at them, but noone can touch them and they don't get opened.

Most GameStop's refuse to do this because of some psychological BS about "holding the box makes you feel ownership." My store is starting to do it when possible, but only for games we have promotional box art for. It's a start...

Yeah, but the "Employee Product Familiarization Program" is actually part of GameStop policy and therefore legal. I make a point to check out USED games when possible, though most employees don't care.

I've never had any problems with Gamespot before. Then again, I've only been there once or twice.

It really makes me mad reading about all these horrible customer experiences at GameStops, 'cause they aren't all that bad! Yes, there are certain aspects that don't change ("gut" copies of games, "check-out" copies here and there, unfair pricing on certain items), but the customer service is WIDELY variable.

At my store, we strive for excellence, helping the customers find what's right for THEM. Informing them about product so they can make the right decision. Being friendly and just talking games with the more "core" customers. Not selling crappy-conditioned discs to customers without their expressed consent (which of course they very rarely give, so we just ship those games to be resurfaced). NOT SLACKING OFF AND PLAYING GAMES DURING WORK!

Any company will have such variance, really. Not all stores in any nation-wide chain are created equal. I do sympathize with those of you who only have crappy GameStop's nearby. Some people just take no pride in their work at all. But I'm not one of them.
