Topic: Annoying thing about Gamestop

Ok, first things first, I only shop at Gamestop as a last resort. I got some extra cash when I sold my books back yesterday, so I wanted to go pick up Cursed Mountain. Best Buy didn't have it, Toys R Us didn't have it, so I went to Gamestop to see if they had it. Well they did have a new copy, so I brought the box up to the register, and instead of bringing me a new, sealed copy of the game, he puts the disc and instructions into the already opened case. Hold on a sec, if it is new, shouldn't I get a new and sealed copy? Isn't what I bought a used copy? To add insult to injury, the disc had fingerprints all over it. If I were to walk right back into the store and try to exchange it, would they give me the used price or count it as an even exchange? Really though, I guess it isn't worth getting upset over. The game is kind of hard to find, and it was a good price, so it's not really that big of a deal. But still, this is one of the reasons I only shop at Gamestop as a last resort.

Not true. If you buy a NEW title and get their last copy, you get the "display model," where you get the box that was on the shelf and the CD that was in the sleeve. The only thing is that others' human hands have touched your disc prior to yours. Personally, I don't see the big deal.

And, if you really want to be OCD about it, your receipt says "new" so you can take your copy to a store with a new sealed one and demand an exchange, though you may have to lie and say something's wrong with the one you got. That would be a whole new kind of obsessive though, and I'd recommend seeing a good therapist.

The only reason they do that is because that was the last copy. If there is only one copy of the game on the floor, they have to "gut" the game, which just means they take out the game and put it in a slip case, so they can have the box on display on the shelf. If you ever wanted to return it, they should give you a refund.

lol, I will look into seeing a therapist. I'm not about to return the game, it's just a little annoying.

"last copy" = game they took home and test drove before release date

I know for a fact that at the GameStop I shop at they do sell used games as new. I know a few people that work there and they tell me that they check out new games all the time and just sell them as new because people won't know the difference. That is why I will only buy sealed copies of games whenever I shop at GameStop.

Yep, I know of the same things happening. Annoys the crap out of me, as well as getting a "NEW" Game that has retail stickers placed all over it, and they do NOT just peel off easily.

I hate it when GameStop treats opened boxes like new. I was sooo mad when I bought my "new" copy of Excitebots:Trick Racing (without the Wii wheel) only to find out later on that the product registration code had already been used. That was 50 Club Nintendo coins down the drain…

When I went back to complain they took forever to attend me because they were too “busy” playing a Madden demo on the Xbox 360. After explaining to the employee about my problem he got out an actual new copy, opened it and gave me the code that came inside. It would have been nice if he had exchange boxes too (don’t like the sticker on the top right mocking me with NEW), but instead took out a receipt for defective product and wrote on it over my box of Excitebots (instead of the countertop) engraving his signature of approval onto the plastic cover. Now whenever I hold the box under the light I can see that engraving. >_<
If you’re wondering, I had worse experience at Best Buy and Wal-mart.

I'll order off their website for new games since they sometimes have good deals and I know the game will be shrink-wrapped so I won't have to deal with the slipcase nonsense (got Wario Land: Shake It! for $18 brand new and free shipping). I'll only buy in-store games if I want an old used game since some are extremely cheap and are in excellent shape (almost new Maximo: Ghosts to Glory for only $3). Only pain is peeling off the 20 identical stickers they slap on their used games, lol. Otherwise, I stick with Amazon or Newegg for game purchases.

I've had mostly good experiences at gamestop, except for a few. The worst was when I went there at 10:20 [the opening time is 10:00] and no one was there. I sat outside until 11:20, and no one came. I ended up going home.

Just let it happen.

If u dont like it dont buy it. Anytime they do that they tell me im getting the display case copy and ask mr if its ok. and even if they didnt ask me and i didnt want the display copy i would just say no thanks and be on my way. You dont HAVE to buy it.

I HATE that too. Destroys my pristine case. Sounds like your gamestop really sucks. I don't shop there much, but they always tell me if I'm getting the display copy, because it's their last one.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Gamestop is my last resort too. I really don't buy used disk games anyway after a bad experience buying Super Monkey Ball 2 at EB games years ago. But I built up quite a collection of NES and SNES games after finding a local-owned used games store that carried games back to the NES days.

For me, the worst thing about GameStop is the persistent smell of B.O., especially in high-traffic locations like malls.

@dusticles ....I'm guessing that it's just your gamestop, because the one I go to smells like a new car. I always go to gamestop, because of a few reasons

  • The employees are always very nice and helpful
  • They have some good deals on used games
  • They have a good selection, and they always have the game I'm looking for
  • There isn't any tax on points cards
Keep in mind, this might just be the Gamestop I go to.

Just let it happen.

Exactly, my friend worked there and said they could "borrow" any game they want. I know the last time I tried to buy a new game there, and they gave me the opened case from the shelf, with a big NEW sitcker on it, I told them this..."Isn't this the copy you guys take home and play? If that is true, then wouldn't it technically make the game used, therefor saving me a few bucks?" Like usual, they didn't really care.

Every retail organization that I have been affiliated with has considered "borrowing" to be STEALING. I've worked in Loss Prevention and been in the industry long enough to see lots of cases where this has happened and employees have been fired and/or prosecuted for it.

With that being said, I purchase almost all of my games used from Game Stop so this wouldn't have been a really big deal for me. I also don't sell back games so no need for me to worry with the price gouging.

All-in-all, I give Game Stop a 9/10!
