Topic: Flip Notes ok for 9 yo?

My sons 9 and wants to sign up but the parent has to sign a permission form and fax it back.
Is it ok for a 9yo? Is there swearing, sex, etc?

There is definitely some people out there who post innapropriate videos. There is some swearing, ,but hardly ever. I doubt that it is safe for a 9 year old. [unless you don't mind a bunch of swearing teenagers who think that blood is funny.]

Personally I don't agree with 110percentful. Hatena make every effort to remove any unsuitable content or language. A tiny amount may slip through for a short time but removal is so fast he is not likely to see it. On the other hand the Flipnotes posted are often exceptional quality and the humor is for his age group.

I am a parent and for a nine year old my opinion is that he should be fine. Its always worth checking what flipnotes he has downloaded from time to time.

I strongly disagree. If you listen, most of the voices in the videos sound like they belong to a 15 year old. Most of the humor involves people getting hurt, and most of the time people draw in blood and things like that. I have seen curse words, some sexual things [not too bad] and other innapropriate content.

Not at all! 110percentful, all due respect.. you are wrong. I have never in my year of having a DSi noticed a bad Flipnote. All of it is usually funny, age appropriate stuff for a 9 year old. You should have NO worries. The only way he could possibly find something is if he searched for it, but even then it most likely won't bring results as Hatena removes all inappropriate Flipnotes that might slip from their approval process, so it is 99.99999999999% safe

I don't think everyone knows how flipnote works. Flipnotes start off on the official website, where people can report is, or rate it. Any flipnote that isn't reported within about a week or so automatically gets put on the DSi. If you noticed, anyone under 13 has to have a parent fax a signed paper. That's just so that Hatena can get out of any trouble. They KNOW that there is always going to be innapropriate content for kids under 13, which is entirely why they have to do the whole fax thing. Think about it- how many other sites [or related media source] require you to print out a form, sign it, and Fax it? If you decide that it's alright for him, I can't do anything to stop you, but know that there is and always will be some innapropriate content.

Hatena rewards anyone that points out offensive flipnotes. They couldn't try harder to make it family friendly, its the best bet on the internet for your son and Nintendo has worked with Hatena to make it as safe as possible.

If you think Tom and Jerry is acceptable then you will not have problems with flipnotes.

I saw a Flipnote once... lets just say it involved body parts which I do not need to discuss. It was gone pretty soon.

I agree with 110percentful. I know that there's some content on Hatena that would be inappropriate for 9-year old. I haven't looked around Hatena much, but it is more made by teenagers. Remember it takes time for Hatena to find a report and take the flipnote down, and your son might run across it before it gets taken down. It's not the worst thing, but it's not for 9-year olds.

I personally say wait until he;s maybe 11 or 12.

Ya know, I don't find it that bad. There are religious flipnotes, people looking for love, butfor the most part I find it fine. My 10 year old bro has been registered (who is younger then me).

If your worried about his going on Hatena flipnote, you had better not let him go to school then.

dont forget the little girls who take photos of themselves and make random flipnotes with them saying "HHHHIIIIIIII _{this is} ME hihihihihihihihi _{ain't i} CUTE? thehe" and random stuff like that.

LOL! xD WOW. rofl. Nothing on there is too bad, plus the blood is like one color, not like realistic. I haven't heard any worse swearing than in a PG movie, same with all the content on there. All the bad flipnotes are removed pretty quickly.

Well my 9 year old daughter had these comments on her flipnotes page just today when I checked: "My birthday is March 25 I'm bisexual BTW if 13-14 and boy or girl I'm free." And this one by the same girl: "For real I'm bisexual! Wanna date? BTW Free reqests for buds wut u want." Just lovely. I reported her. So if you let your son do it, you have to constantly check your child's page on the website for inappropriate comments or flipnotes.

Hatena has it set up very well for reporting flipnotes and comments, as people are motivated because they get free stars if theyre the first to report
