Have games like Super Mario Bros (NES), Mario Land, and Metroid 2 got the ability to save game progress?

Can't remember if you could save your state on GB games, but I know you couldn't on NES.

metroid 2 is the only one that can save ( ether save codes or a real save can't remember) the other ones (on there original systems) i have so i am positive the can't be saved ( except on VC)

SMB and SML don't have in game save spots, but you can use the 3DS VC's restore points.

As for Metroid II, it does have in game save spots (you can also use restore points).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

So unlike the NES, I will be able to save my progress whenever I want with the original Super Mario Bros?

And the same with Mario Land and all other Virtual Console games?

Yep. You can create a restore point at any time you desire (in the middle of a jump, right before a boss fight, ect).

That's all VC is. Fancy emulators made by Nintendo, therefore rendering them legal.
EDIT: The guy above posted that while I was typing this.

Well the closest thing to saving in the Mario games are when you beat the game you can select what level you want, I kinda count that as a SAVE

Nintendo puts a big reminder in the instructions that using a restore point will overwrite your normal (in-game) save file. So, be careful of that.

And unlike some fan emulators, Nintendo's doesn't have a rewind/undo feature, so if you do accidentally do that (haven't checked if they give you another warning), you're stuck.

You can lock restore pints by pressing Start + X + R

Yeah, Wii and 3DS' virtual console games are emulators and roms packed together. Each game has it's own emulator packed in with it. What a waste of space. And Nintendo's emulators are far from fancy. Restore points are nothing new, they had them on the Wii as well, but now they allow you to save and restore to that point whenever. Their emulators are so non-fancy, that they don't even give you all the features of the original games.

I heard Ice Climber in Japan has Download Play multiplayer. It's a start (that will hopefully continue). If Nintendo does that in the US & Europe, etc., I'll be happy.
