I am 27 hours in, and while I still think it's fun I don't think it's the greatest of the series! A pity, since I hoped the series would go out with a big bang! The point is, the story is not interesting enough! And the previous titles had much more (and better) cutscenes! For example: The mask of miracle started with a spectactular cutscene of a Carnival float. This game just starts with Layton and friends entering a Zeppelin-like flying device and flying away, that's all! Still, it's over when it's over! So I expect to see some cool things before it ends! Please no spoilers!

Still yet to load up "Miracle Mask" having got it for free as a download through a promo last year.

I LOVED the first game. The second bored me quickly for some reason, and I have lapsed since. I LOVE the puzzles but found the story and travel in the second game frustrating. I hear Miracle Mask is more streamlined. I look forward to finding out, and may then jump on this one!

Each game is "stand alone" enough not to scare off players that skip entries, right?

The games are structured into trilogies. Curious Village, Diabolical Box, and Unwound Future make up one trilogy, while Last Specter, Miracle Mask, and Azran Legacies make up the other. In general I think it is a good idea to play in chronological order within each trilogy, although I don't think it matters which one you start with.

I strongly suggest playing Last Specter before Miracle Mask, although you won't be lost if you do skip Last Specter. Nevertheless, it introduces characters that are central to the plot of Miracle Mask.

Also, you really, really need to play Unwound Future, the final game in the original trilogy. It has what is easily the best plot in the entire series. It's really quite incredible. By far my favorite Professor Layton game. I did enjoy Diabolical Box as well, but I agree with you that it was probably the weakest link in the series.

I completely agree! Unwound Future is not only the best Layton game but also one of my favorite games of all time.

I got all the five games and there is no way I'm gonna skip this one. After all even though I may have spoiled some of its story myself(DAMM IT BTW!!!!!!) I still wonder how this will all end up and DON'T SPOIL THAT HERE UNTIL ITS OUT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before I got into the series, I never thought my Brother would end up getting me the first game. At first I didn't like the puzzles the game had to offer but then I got used to it and I started loving it. Then I got Pandora's Box(In case you're wondering, yes I got the EU version but since the DS IS region free, it doesn't matter because there's only the word difference plus one puzzle difference) While I didn't like the story a lot like curious village, I still liked it and the puzzles have improved from the original.

Then unwound came which is where the series topped. I LOVE THIS GAME! its beyond great. The story is fantastic, the puzzles are even more fun and most importantly, INSPECTOR CHELMEY IS AWESOME!!!!!!! I for some reason can't play the downloadable puzzles in the games but once I get the last one, I plan to do all those to revisit.

Where does Layton go from here on? Probably like how Guybrush Treepwood had vanished to thin air( Miss Monkey Island btw) Its a shame that the character is going away from the industry. This is the reason why Nintendo is awesome. To encourage devs to be creative. I'm pretty sure that if this were on PSP or Vita, i doubt that it would do well....ok maybe it would perform well but I don't think it would suit for the devs intentions. Can someone tell me why Level-5 decided to make the layton series exclusively for the Nintendo DS and 3DS?

I can't believe this game still isn't out yet........ as Layton would say.....How embarassing!

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I've never played any of the games in this series, they look interesting. Should I just get this new one or start with a different one?

I played Miracle Mask first (5th title). I loved the game so I purchased all the previous releases ( 1 2 3 4) to understand the full story
and am definitely looking for the final (6th)
If you are still unsure about it, check gameplay video for first title The Professor Layton and the Curious Village -2D game- or Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask -3D- .
I don't recommend you start with the last title because that will close the story and make playing the previous titles -if you decide to play them- uninteresting.

P.S when checking a gameplay video on YouTube , (1)make sure it is Title+gameplay part 1 and (2) don't read the comment section to avoid spoilers.

"Where does Layton go from here on?"

Well, things look bleak since Level 5 seems to go on the smartphone/tablets tour! In other words: Maybe we only see cheap downloads from now on! It could be game over for proper retail Level 5 games, sadly!

Now that I finished it: Last few hours where pretty interesting, though it does ripp off a certain studio Ghibli movie! All in one it was a fun game with a great conclusion, but not the best game in the series!

Anyway, I hope we still get some new "Layton" stuff someday! Maybe a Layton anime series? Maybe a game starring Descole? I'll wait and see!
