Mario 64 DS is notorious for being a missed opportunity. It featured great new levels, three new playable characters and 30 more stars than the original. But, the catch was, you had to use the control pad (or even worse, the ill-fated thumb strap) to control the game.
For those of you who could never adjust to using a D-pad to control a full 3D game, I'd really recommend it giving it a shot on the 3DS. Playing this game with the circle pad makes a surprisingly amazing difference.
Obviously it still technically only has 8 inputs so Mario and the gang take noticeably wider turns than in the N64 original, but once you get used to the new physics and using the Y button to run, the game plays fantastically well. It feels like you're playing a 3D game that was specifically made for the system now, as opposed to one that was shoehorned into an uncomfortable control scheme. For those who were disillusioned with the controls on the DS, I'd really recommend giving it another shot
