Topic: Major Battery Issue - Original 3DS

It's a few years old now, but was running perfectly fine (aside from a wonky L-button) until just last month. I don't think the game or the theme had anything to do with it, but a few days after purchasing Etrian Odyssey II: Untold (and deciding to use its 3DS Theme), the battery went from holding a charge for a few hours, to dying after only about 2 minutes once unplugged!

I tried putting the Theme back to how it was, tried other games (including downloads and DS games), and it's still the same problem. For some reason, the battery simply cannot hold a charge now - and, as you might imagine, it's been very frustrating to say the least. It wasn't dropped, nothing spilled into it. I even downloaded the latest system update to see what would happen - nothing.

So, what do I do now? I don't have any remaining warranty for it. Would I need to send it to Nintendo, or is there some do-it-yourself pro-tip about fixing a battery that I don't know about? And is this a common thing to happen to a 3DS after a few years of continual use? Thanks.

Either your charger is faulty, or you need a new battery. Fortunately chargers are readily available, however a new battery can only be purchased directly from Nintendo (unless you're willing to settle for a third party alternative). If you are still able to play the 3DS while the system is plugged into the charger, then there may indeed be a problem with the battery. Just give Nintendo a call and see what they have to say about it. I'm sure that they've dealt with customers who have had the same problem that you're experiencing.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

I suggest buying a new battery for your 3DS. Here's a link.

It's not difficult to get to the battery. You'll need a tiny screwdriver (#00 Phillips screwdriver)....
