A similar theory bouncing around is that Layton is the father, and Luke is actually Katrielle's mother. 0.o

That's another thing I'll be very interested to find out. Along with why Big Ben's clock hands are seemingly made out of bean paste sweets.

More seriously, this bit from the official English press release is intriguing:

The story will focus less on dynamic problem-solving and more on solving multiple mystery cases observed in the everyday lives of Londoners, which will bring a faster tempo and more comical tone to the series.

Obviously, any change to the structure of the Layton games we've have fallen in love with is bound to cause some concern (especially after the two mobile games), but given that we've had six very substantial Layton experiences that have stuck firmly to the formula of 'point and click adventure progressed via charmingly shoehorned puzzles', I don't think a slight change of focus or pacing is necessarily a bad thing.

It sounds like there's going to be slightly more emphasis of detective work, deduction, and case-specific reasoning - potentially similar to that of Detective Pikachu or maybe even Phoenix Wright. I find the idea of 'playing the detective' quite appealing - especially as you were often left to passively watch the plot unfold in earlier Layton games - but I hope the puzzle aspect isn't watered down too much. Given that it's coming to mobile, my main concern is that the puzzles end up more like Candy Crush rather than Professor Layton.

@Maxz That was my concern, seeing those puzzles in the trailer for Lady Layton. For some reason, they don't look too... random and difficult as you'd see in past Layton games. Detective work would be a nice change of pace but I just want to see difficult, varied and certainly random puzzles return.
@Ralizah Like is basically Professor Layton's assistant, so it would make sense that Catriel grew up under Luke's influence as well as her father's; meaning she must have learnt how to converse with animal from Luke. Or maybe the Laytons now live in a world where animals can speak with all humans.

God first.

I don't mind changes to the way puzzles are handled so long as they're fully fleshed out and provide some level of challenge. I wonder if they're still going to do the downloadable puzzles for a year thing.

That actually occurred to me, but I'm pretty sure there are places Level-5, or any sane, reasonable company, for that matter, isn't willing to go.

OK, so before I continue with what I want to say... why didn't anyone update this thread on the week of August 7 when an issue of Famitsu detailed with snippets of Lady Layton information was released? I could have done it myself, frankly... but on that week I was on a trip with no computer and limited internet. So I decided to wait until I returned home before updating this thread... that is, if no one had updated it then.
Well, so according to the Famitsu of the week of August 7,

  • Katrielle Layton is the protagonist of the game (this was already obvious).
  • Katrielle is on a quest to find her missing father.
  • Along the way Katrielle will meet various characters with unique characteristics and solve puzzles and cases... Nintendo Life says these cases range from "from rescuing lost cats to solving murders." SOLVING MURDERS. O.O
  • Katrielle has a talking dog, Sharo... and she'll work with him to solve the puzzles and cases mentioned above.
  • Various locations were confirmed, including Frankfurt (Germany) where the Layton Offices are located, a, and I quote, "shady place" called Rolling Town Alley, a cruise ship, and the Big Ben (London).
And.... that's it. Yay, I'll no more have to watch shows like Castle and Forever to get my fix of solving murders, since I'll be solving them in this game. Makes me think of what the age rating of this game might be.
But the biggest takeaway from this update is the fact that the one and only Hershel Layton... WAS KIDNAPPED! To be honest, I never thought of Professor Layton would be victim to such an incident for some reason. But here we are, I guess. I can only imagine how the professor is handling this unfortunate occurence.
"Hm. This reminds me of a puzzle!" "Can I have some tea.. with 4 counts of sugar, please?"

Layton would never do such a thing as request 4 counts of sugar in his tea! Such sucrosial excess is an affront to the basic tenet of self-restraint that guides all actions of gentleman. Not to mention its effect on the pearly whites.

Concerns about sugar aside, I had noticed that the game seems to be using murder as a plot device, as the earlier trailer made mention of someone being killed "just as the legend stated". I wonder how dark a turn the series will take. 0.o

@Maxz I doubt it'll take too dark a turn. The series certainly didn't get all grimdark after the attempted mass murder, lost love, political corruption, etc. in The Unwound Future.

I prefer "Lady Layton" too. Oh well, it's only a name.

As do I. I hope we get this on the 3DS, but it may be awhile if it does make it outside of Japan. Gotta love how fast those Level-5 titles make it to the West.

Guess I'll get it on mobile if I can. It's a shame that since I got my Switch, I stopped playing in my 2DS, just came back for the new f2p Kirby.
Once I get MK8D, I'll let my 2DS RIP.

@CrazedCavalier: That's a bummer that it's not releasing on the same day. Eh, I can wait.

Great news! Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy is coming to North America this fall!

Unfortunately I'm about to have a class so I can't go into any detail. No word on European regions yet, but it's only a matter of time. Maybe.

And now I'm more determined to finish the first Layton trilogy. I still haven't gotten around to playing Unwound Future yet (I'm told it's amazing).

I'm in dubio. Should I buy this game retail tomorrow for my new 3DS? or do I get it now on my Sony Xperia? I always loved playing Professor Layton games on the (3)DS, but I don't see how this game plays any less on a mobile phone since either version lacks 3d effect. Also the mobile version is much cheaper.

Ok so I bought the mobile version...

I'm liking the cutscenes so far, but the first difference I noticed is the change in music style. It's a bit modern compared to the soundtrack from the Professor layton games. Less street accordion and a more noticeable beat. Doesn't do much good for the old fashioned London feel.

Just beaten this and have to say: Glad to own almost every game in the series. This alone gives almost bad feeling about the series, so wouldn't want to anyone to experience that.
