Topic: Is Nintendo 3DS using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?

This has been on my mind for awhile ever since I saw the box art for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. The box has no indication of the known "NWC" blue dot and there has been NO mention about Nintendo WiFi Connection- all I do hear is "WiFi online play" and a simple "online connectivity".

I would think that because it's apparent that Nintendo is upping their online infrastructure that they will not be using their NWFC service for the 3DS (not using Nintendo Points for eShop is another indication). I just want to know if it's true that they are no longer using the 5 year old service and what the (potentially) new online service is for the 3DS and what it is going to be called.

Another fact that there's this lease or something for Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver's GTS system to close down in 2015. I don't know if this accounts for Pokemon Black and White as it was brought up before the release, but by that time Nintendo's NEW home console would be released by then and the new online system will be the main focus while the NWFC will probably have their servers closed down (no more online Smash Bros Brawl!! D:) If you're looking for the source: well, I read this last year and don't remember the website- but that's where the handy Google search bar comes into play, right?

Similar things has happened with the Xbox Live and Playstation online games.

I'm assuming they are using some upgraded Wi-fi connection that they control.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo and name are just for branding, really. Nintendo has gotten a sizable amount of criticism from gamers for WFC and its limitations. Nintendo could keep them but it might be smarter to drop them for their next devices and wipe the slate clean.

Besides, there hasn't been too much information about game internet connectivity besides the one friend code thing and some SpotPass vagueness. The service is definitely not the same as the DS and Wii's though, that's certain. We'll get all the details once the 3DS is out in Japan.
