I just recently got Nintendogs + Cats for $4.99. I've only played it for about 15 minutes, but I think it will be fun. It doesn't compare to a real pet, but it's the next best thing.

I love my animals, and I miss my dog more than anything in the world! I would have to say real, but the plus side to virtual pets (at least in Nintendogs) is they don't die! And you don't get quite as attached to them. As long as you are somewhat mentally stable.
Fake pets Nintendogs Pro: They don't eat,sleep or poop, and when you get bored with it, you can trade then in. Con: You look like a sad fool playing with a fake dog.....
Real pets Pro: They keep you in shape, their love is real, and they help you pick up chicks. Con: they still poop on your bed
