I honestly don't understand the bile hurled towards this review. Obviously, people can disagree on fine points, but to say that a gamer isn't "qualified" to write a review is wrongheaded.
Battle is a slog, and enemies aren't particularly well-thought-out. The elemental accessories are grossly overpowered because of the lack of variety of enemies in each level.
Dialogue is OK, but the story itself is weak. Too much is left behind the curtain. This isn't the same as, say, Final Fantasy, or Dragon Warrior, where your purpose is known from the beginning. In this game, you begin by finding medicine for your father. Then you go on an adventure. Then, you start chasing some dude simply because you hear his name over and over. Then...well, needless to say, the continuity is non-existent.
Level design is...interesting. I generally like hidden passages, but this takes the cake. Trying to find hidden chests is an exercise in tedium (and most of the time, all you get as a reward is Metal Coins or some other nonsense).
All that being said, I liked the game OK (I ended up platting it on both the PS3 and the PS4), but I feel that my bias towards classic JRPGs is the only reason that I did. Honestly, this game pales in comparison not only with the greats, but even the lesser titles of later generations. I would honestly have preferred to play Paladin's Quest again over Pier Solar.
I do hope more companies make classic JRPGs. But that doesn't excuse mistakes. This isn't the crapstorm that Dragon Fantasy, Book 2 is, but make no mistake - this game is OK, but hardly the stellar experience that some make it to be.
How does it follow that because kids aren't playing games on Facebook, they are necessarily playing them on a console? I hope there's more to the study than this seeming non sequitur.
I always find it strange that people think this game is so hard. I actually think that, without guides, the original is harder (grumble, grumble - LMAO). Combat can be trying, but it's never overly difficult, with the sole exception being the birds in the Great Palace.
This is a great game. I can respect that people enjoy the different style of the other games, but it seems strange to say that this game is bad, because those games are good. I actually found the front view refreshing in the day, and not bad today.
Terranigma is great, but it's no Final Fantasy VI. I respect trying to find deep cuts, but FFVI is arguably the best game in the franchise (and in my opinion, it's the best game ever made).
It's weird that you could download games, but the system wouldn't be backward compatible. Obviously, there is different technology, but for PS3, the same technology that allows you to download PS1 games also allows you to play them on the system.
I do hope it's true, though. The GC was easily the best gaming machine of last generation - it just didn't get enough support. Pikmin 2, Eternal Darkness, Wind Waker, SSB: Melee...great stuff.
Cozy Fire? Man, WiiWare really scrapes the dregs for that one.
I'm pumped about Faxanadu (I'm not sure why people think Zelda II isn't thought well of - while some people might not like it when compared to Zelda, it's still a solid game). I played this game so many times when I was a kid.
I'm sure I'm being a nostalgic fool, but I really like the original version. I like the sound much better than the GBA version, and yeah, this is the one I remember.
Oh, Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) is better. ;-D
I can't understand why so many people are vehemently saying "NO!". I would surmise they've never actually played the Virtual Boy, and only "remember" it because they read about it on some "Worst Things EVAH!" list.
As one who did play (and own) the virtual boy, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the games make it to DLC. Yes, I would also like to see GBA games, but there's no reason we can't have both.
I thought this was a pretty good game, actually. Initially, I was disappointed, but after a couple of plays (since the game isn't so long, you can play it a lot), I grew to really like it. I'll definitely pick it up.
Yeah, I'm with Alphack. I don't think this game merits a 10/10. because there is no such thing as a perfect game. But this title ranks with Final Fantasy Tactics, and that's about the highest praise I can give to any SRPG.
I guess it's just generational differences. I vastly prefer the hard copy of the disc to the download games I can get, for a variety of reasons (the least of these being that I can sell back a hard copy of the game, as I actually have the rights to the object, and not merely its content).
One last thing: yes, the game is 1/6th of what I would pay at the store, but no one is going to confuse any downloaded game with, say, "Uncharted 2," "Mass Effect 2," or "Mario Galaxy 2".
But, different strokes for different folks. I don't believe that game companies are getting "screwed over" on DLC, but I'm not a fan of DLC in general, so naturally I'd see the worst here.
The microtransactions definitely seem to be increasing in price. I imagine the companies realize that the people who want DLC will pay a lot for it, and the people on the fence usually decide against it.
Bloodlines? Bloodlines is crap compared to this game.
This is the best Castlevania title ever made. "Symphony of the Night" doesn't really count, since it was really a Metroid game posing as a Castlevania game.
I have no doubt that Nintendo is doing this - if the VC was a big money-maker, they would release more games for it.
That being said, I agree with the article. Nintendo has done little to advertise the VC, so it's no surprise that people aren't lining up to purchase games. I've never really liked the shop channel site itself - it is pretty painful to browse systems for titles in and of itself.
But anyway, if that's how it goes, then that's how it goes. It was nice while it lasted, I guess.

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th September 2012 (Europe)
@SilentHunter: You fight Jecht at the end of Final Fantasy 10, not Braska (it is called "Braska's final aeon", but Jecht is the final aeon).

Re: Double Dragon II Coming to Save Wii Virtual Console
I liked the NES version better, but that's neither here nor there: I wish something would hurry and come out.
Re: Feature: 20 Years of the Super NES
@89:
The American SNES was certainly built like a tank. I've had mine for nearly 20 years, and despite 6 different moves, it looks brand new.

Re: Nintendo Download: 4th April 2011 (North America)
Why are there stink lines coming off of Bonk in the cover art?

Re: Review: S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (Virtual Console / NES)
@20: LOL. Yeah, googling SCAT probably will get you in trouble.
This game looks pretty fun. I always liked "Forgotten Worlds".
Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - February 2011
I would much rather see SMT than anything else on that list.
Re: Review: Exed Exes (Virtual Console / Virtual Console Arcade)
Exed Exes (which I also read as "Exed Eyes" back in the day) is a pretty boring game. I have the version on the Capcom Collection.

Re: Review: Just Sing! Christmas Songs (DSiWare)
I am not religious in the least, but it seems weird to have some half-dressed sexy Santa girl singing "Silent Night".

Re: Review: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (Virtual Console / TurboGrafx-16)
This game was a downgrade from Super Castlevania IV, but is still a solid title.
Re: Phantasy Star
@BananaJane:
Yep. The Sonic Ultimate Collection is pretty much the reason I'll never download Sega games to my VC, as I got them all for a fraction of the cost.
