Re: Random: Here's Why Nintendo Doesn’t Want You Using The Word "Nintendo" To Describe Video Games

On the app thing that people have discussed.

I seem to remember a time where they were called "programmes" instead. I always used to call them programmes on Windows when I was a kid. It seemed to slowly move toward applications before it got shortened to apps when smartphones became a thing. I was always under the impression that Apple pushed for that branding/terminology because it was part of their company name.

On using the word Nintendo. When talking conversationally, I might refer to any Nintendo handheld up to the DS as a game boy. 3DS, 2DS and Switch, I just call a Nintendo.

As for Xbox and PlayStation, I might use them interchangeably depending on what I'm playing most at the time. Like I might call a PlayStation an Xbox or an Xbox a PlayStation in conversation if it has no real baring on the convo. I'd probably be more specific if I was playing an exclusive game as it would raise some eyebrows if I was playing Uncharted on an Xbox!

Nintendo home consoles, I'd normally just call by their name. I use SNES (said as an acronym) and Super Nintendo interchangeably. I also call an N-E-S a NES (as an acronym)

It's both a combination of ease and also making conversation flow better. I may be more specific when talking to a fellow enthusiast or I may be more vague when the specifics don't really matter.

@Not_Soos @AnnoyingFrenzy I say sellotape when talking about that thin clear tape used for wrapping presents. I barely use it though except for that purpose.

My most used tape is probably packing tape but I just call that tape. I don't use that brown tape either because it's trash, I have like a beige-y coloured one which is a lot stronger. So packing tape is the only tape where I omit the adjective/brand unless I am using another type extensively for a period of time.

I use scotch tape (and call it scotch tape) when bagging and boarding comics. I'm pretty sure that's a brand name.

I call masking tape, masking tape. For er, protecting lines when painting/decorating normally.

I call duct tape, duct tape. Normally use this for quick fixes on the car. Like if my bumper is hanging off or something...

The other thing I call a tape, is a video. Like when I do exercise tapes or yoga tapes. I think that's just a throwback to when those things used to come on video tapes. So if I'm doing some exercise, I might say that I'm doing my tape. I only got a car with a CD player a couple years ago so up until that point I was listening to music on tapes as well!

I also call a vacuum cleaner a hoover too. Probably because of the brand though I've never actually owned a Hoover branded vacuum.

I am British too, for reference.

I had one of those stupid squiggly lights for the GBC. Such great fun having a tiny spot on your screen lit up so much you can't see what's there and the rest of the screen so dark you can't see that either.

I got a much better light for the GBA. It was like a floodlight that lit up the whole screen. Sadly I broke it when I was trying to clean battery acid out of it a couple years ago.

Re: Yes, Folders Are Now On Switch, Here Are Some Quick Tips

ralphdibny

Spent a couple hours putting all my games in folders. The new system seems to be lacking in some respects though I'm a bit to ill and tired to work out which ones. Had to work out a weird time consuming process to group the games without missing any out.

I suppose it's cool you can add games to multiple folders but it just adds more adminstration in some ways. Also it's hard/impossible to see what folders a game belongs to at a glance rather than viewing each folder independently and keeping track of the games.

Feels like you still need a spreadsheet to supplement this new system which makes you wonder what the point of it is at all.

Hopefully they update it and add more functionality.

Re: Nintendo Of America Launches A Packed My Nintendo Store

@Otoemetry to be honest with you, I thought it was still run by The Hut Group, just without its branding. I thought both stores were terrible and anything HutGroup related is awful too (Zavvi etc). I was under the impression that they shared customer service between the brands and my experience with them hasn't changed since the switchover. I have had negative (and fairly similar) experiences with the old Nintendo Store, the My Nintendo Store and Zavvi.

Re: Nintendo Of America Launches A Packed My Nintendo Store

@Otoemetry it is a completely frustrating experience. I did change my bank card on it last year. I'm trying to remember what I did, I Might have clicked edit on the existing card as opposed to creating a new one.

I wish they'd take PayPal but I imagine they'd be scared of all the chargebacks they get.

I also noted that they display like a 97% positive rating from a website called Revolut or something. I looked up the company and apparently they don't let you write poor reviews. The store's equivalent rating on Trustpilot is incredibly low. It's just mad how obvious it is that they are rubbish and also know it enough that they have to use a dodgy review website to hide it

@dartmonkey I just wanted to say, regardless of the topic and contents of the article, this was really well written 😅. It told an engaging and well paced story from beginning to end and I was noticeably gripped by it.

Sorry that was a weird thing to say but I thought I'd provide the complement as after I finished reading, I felt like I do after I've ended up watching something all the way through to the end on TV even though I initially put the programme on for background noise during dinner 😅😅

Re: Random: This Disc Will Wipe Your Nintendo Wii Clean

ralphdibny

From the headline, I initially thought this was about the Wii disc drive cleaning kit they released after Smash Bros came out because peoples Wiis weren't reading the Dual Layer disc that smash Bros came on. I have that kit.

Having read it the article fully, a factory reset disc sounds really cool and unique!

Re: Nintendo Of America Launches A Packed My Nintendo Store

A "big step up" and now "equivalent to the UK store" makes me dread to wonder what they had before.

The UK store is awful. It has tons of stuff to buy, sure. Lots of cool bits and bobs and pre order bonuses. But as soon as you have an issue with an order, want to cancel something, want to return something, want to change your payment details on a pre order, well you just hit a brick wall with the Customer Service. It sucks and I hate that they rolled My Nintendo into it. Makes ordering the cool NSO controllers a nerve wracking experience.

@CANOEberry haha my apologies for being late to the party. To be fair though, NL do use a lot of British colloquialisms across the board. It often makes me laugh and it does make the site feel more homely amongst the swathes of American news outlets that come from across the pond.

To be honest, I didn't know what a Jobbie was until I became good friends with a Scottish person a few years ago. I do love hearing new words (or at least new meanings for old words 😅)

If you are interested in more language quirks, I'd check out Tom Scott's channel on YouTube. He does a whole series on interesting facets of different languages.

Re: Random: Remember When Nintendo Tried To Sell The DS To Metal Heads?

ralphdibny

@Silly_G ohhhh yeah! I had to look it up but I remember that now. What a blast from the past, I feel like there was quite a decent sized and varied launch line up for the DS even if my own experience was limited to SM64DS, the Metroid Prime Hunters demo and Pictochat.

I'm not sure if that Urban Asphalt GT was a launch game too. I picked it up for dirt cheap much later in the life cycle. I got reminded of that when the 9th iteration came out on switch. I had no idea there was a 2-8 😅

I'm pretty sure these weren't launch games but I remember playing a lot of Viewtiful Joe and Burnout Legends on DS too. I need to revisit some of these games!

Re: Random: This Forgotten 'Touch Me Tour' Tent Proves That Nintendo Wasn't 100% Family-Friendly During The DS Era

ralphdibny

So cool. I went to a less adult oriented DS hands on show case at Bluewater pre release. Very exciting, played a bit of SM64DS and Project Rub which I think ended up having a different name over here in the UK.

I also went to one for the Wii U but I was older and the games on show were generally less exciting to me even if they showed promise.

I'd really like somebody else to remember the Nintendo Challenger though. I am sure I went to it when I was a kid. It may or may not have been at Thorpe Park or Chessington. I'm pretty sure it was a massive lorry with one side of it open and it had SNES demo units to play and possibly N64 demo units.

Re: Feature: Horizon Chase Turbo's 'Senna Forever' Expansion Is A Fitting Tribute To A Racing Legend

ralphdibny

Nice article and perspective about your experience with Ayrton Senna's legacy in both games and real life.

Despite being allergic to sports (including Motorsport 😅), I played a lot of Monaco GP on the game gear as a kid.

It's kind of weird how key sporting celebrities will stick out to me because of their association with games i would have played about sports I won't have played (much of at least!). People like Ayrton Senna, Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, Anna Kournikova and even Garry Kasparov.
