Rom sites actually help Nintendo keep future prospectors. The Pokemon online private server is stealing from Nintendo. They are the real threat. They offer free to play but if you want exclusive access to costumes, mount, and areas you have to buy their membership with cash. These are revenues being generated with Nintendo product. I'm not sure if Nintendo blindly ignoring it but free to play with micro transaction is the future for online gamers. But ROM sites keep players offline which makes them a lead for prospecting newer games. But once a player invest in micro transaction he is hooked to the online community.
ROM sites probably barely make enough revenue to keep their servers up but these 3rd party pokemon online servers make enough to live a very comfortable life. They don't pay their staff so all the revenue goes to themselves and probably 5% goes to server maintenance.
I can vouch that Pokemon Revolution online probably makes over 10,000 dollars a month if not more with their micro transactions.
