I bought this game soley to play co-cop. I haven't even tried it in solo and I don't think I care to do so. Its just one of those games that you have to play with someone else. There's nothing wrong with that.
That being said, this IS NOT a perfect game. It is certainly short and is devoid of any depth, so its really genre specific. It's not something I could recommend to general gamers. For those who like a multitude of styles, it is a really fun and enjoyable game. For $8 its not ever going to be a waste of an investment (unless you live alone and never have any friends to play with).
I love and hate Super Ghouls and Ghost. It straddles that line between challenging and infuriating. You don't want to sacrifice fun factor for challenge. After buying that game and playing through it once, I don't think I shall try another of this series ever again. I need to keep my hair.
Loved this game as a kid even though I never owned it. We used to hang out at my neighbour's house and play it there. It's true that the most frustrating thing about it is that you can't play co-op on it. This is especially true when you have 3 kids sitting in a basement, all watching someone else play. I still have a working N64 and in my mind, the series has never topped F-Zero X, so I think I'll stick with that.
I've still on the fence on this one. I like the look, I've tried the emulator, but I can't seem to justify 800 pts on it with so many other option out there. I'll have to watch for more player comments before I'm convinced.
Cally "The toughest thing for me about this game is the crazy level layout. I mean, you'll descend stairs from the middle of a forest underground, and then you'll be in a town . . . that's underneath a forest! (yet the sun is out)"
I'm pretty sure that the towns aren't underneath forests or waterways. This was the 2-D equivalent of showing depth of terrain. The stairs are usually going to take you "forwards" or out from the forest/mountains (towards the screen). Think of it as the forest is sitting up high on the cliffs, and you climb down the cliffside to the town at the bottom. Its still outside, just in the foreground with everything above and behind it.
Hey, they had limited technology to work with- it's the best they could do!
I bought this because of similar warm memories of a rental one saturday back in the 80's. We played it all day and loved it (as a family actually- my brother, sister and mom all enjoyed it) and even now this is a fun co-op option for me and the wife. Not recommended for gamers who take themselves too seriously.
I'm in the camp of people who have played this game (multiple times) and simply do not like it. I've tried to play through it like 3 or 4 times in the past (in different times of my life) and I just don't really like the story or the characters. None of the characters particularly stand out to me personality wize and I've just played other, more enjoyable RPG's. Heck, I think Illusion of Gaia was more fun.
Yeah, I downloaded it shortly after my comments in March. It DOES make you feel awesome and the Classic Controller gives you greate gameplay with the joystick. I actually ONLY used the Water Armour for the first 10 times I played it, due to people's comments here. That was a shame, because the Earth Armour is totally my favourite after trying it just once! Holy moly, the Water Armour may have a wider spread, but it is certainly NOT the most power weapon. Love the variety AND the difficulty level. It really helps to push the player to step up their game. I've gone back to old favourites such as Gradius III after playing this and Lords of Thunder has made me a better SHUMP player!
Mickeymac: "I actually want this one more than Gunstar Heroes..." I have both and both are excellent. The only thing that should make one contemplate between the two is the whether you'll be playing alone or with a friend. Gunstar is at its best with two people, whereas Alien Soldier is solo all the way.
" I wish I had the time and money to play games like this..." While I can't comment on your money situation, the time problem is easily rectified. This is not an RPG title where you'll need to invest hours in following the storyline or some such. This is like Super R-Type crossed with Double Dragon. Its really fast action with pick up and play style gameplay. You can seriously play this game for 5 minutes every day; stop and come back to it whenever you like. The Wii's "save" for VC Games is one of its best features. Don't worry about time, just download the sucker and enjoy!
"You're probably not jumping to the right platforms or at the right times"
Yeah, I've tried to do this so many times that I'm considering never playing this game again. Which platforms are the "right" ones? There's two blue ones, then two yellow ones. The second yellow platform has too big of a gap. Did I miss something that moves it closer?
Um, has anyone else had this problem? I've made it to Booster's Tower and in the room after you turn into NES Mario there's a group of platforms. Two blue, two yellow and there's a Snifit on top shooting Bullet Bills. THE GAP BETWEEN THE YELLOW PLATFORMS IS TOO BIG! I cannot jump up to the top of this room. I cannot find any Walkthroughs that tell me this is a trouble spot. I am worried that this downloadable version of SM RPG is flawed somehow. Anyone else have this problem?
I'm also a huge fan of Little Nemo. I sort of wish we had that instead of this game, difficulty be darned.
While I haven't played this game yet, after watching the video I have even less interest in purchasing it. Its just one of those things, y'know? Like, if I can't even enjoy the concept or the visuals for the game then all the gameplay in the world isn't going to make up for it. I think I'll buy DoReRi instead.
This is a dream come true! I never thought I would be able to play new, old games! If this sells well, we may see more! I don't just mean more Mega Man, I mean possibly more from other companies. How cool would it be to get a Super Mario 4, Contra, Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania, NES style?
Hey, I loved Lament of Innocence, but even I know that there is nothing like a good Castleoid to cure what ails ya. Here's hoping we get to see some more 2-D sidescrollers. I've never had more fun with a game (besides FF VI, 'natch) or set of games in my life!
Once you return to the Wii menu your game progress will be saved. Its in a save file on your hardrive. Read more of your instruction manual to find out all about this sweet feature.
I give this game a 4 out of 5 only because it's difficulty sort of irks me. Granted, I downloaded this game because I was seeking a challenge (after playing through Castlevania) but this is sort of ridiculous. Still, the gamer in me loves it.
I almost gave this 5 stars. I know its legendary, and I agree it is a very addictive game, but I have to go with 4.5. In comparison to Mario 2 and 3, this is just not in the same league.
I love this game. Its true that many new players will probably have to resort to an online walkthrough (just like we had to use Nintendo Power to get us through back in the day) but it is still satisfying and very much ahead of its time. This is your chance to see Kanomi's Castleoid structure for the first time. For $5, its a deal.
This seems excessive. I don't know what better word to use for what I just viewed, but I don't think I would really enjoy playing this. I like shooters too, like, I enjoy R-Type, Gradius and Lords of Thunder. This just looks frustrating.
"Damo: I'm quite shocked as Super Mario World is clearly a better game all round." I'm not sure this is fair to say. There is still an ongoing debate as to which one is better. If this statement was true, then there really wouldn't be one, would there? Personally, I prefer Mario 3. I acknowledge Mario World's greatness and agree with all of its strengths, but I'm not sure I like the Bowser fight as much. That's the clincher for me. #3 just did it better, and broke the tie.
What would be so wrong with the SC releasing every possible game before the Wii's lifetime finishes? What would be so bad about having a full catalogue for people to choose from, 24-7? I don't see the problem. That's actually what I hoped the VC would be when I first heard about it. Making people re-wait for games that have already technically been released is weird enough already, but when the Emulator starts to seem all the more tempting because your favourite game just isn't being released, they may ultimately lose money.
I actually really liked the controller. First of all, it was nicely seperated, spaced and balanced when I held and used it. It was nice to get the feel of the trigger "Z" button as you tore people apart in Goldeneye and the "arcade" layout of the buttons was fun with games in the fighting genre. Plus, it looked really cool when you had a Red, Blue, Yellow and Green controller set up for Multiplayers.
Loved this thing. I remember my brother saved enough money to buy it just as it was being released. After school I ran across the playground to get to my parents car, who were picking us up to take us to Toys R Us. My best friend came along for the ride- too this bad boy home and spent all night playing through Super Mario World. That was one of the coolest, most exciting moments of my childhood. I love this system.
My dad came home one day with a suprise (he said). He had this black, thick plastic case, the sort of thing you see housing power tools. He opens the thing up and inside is this machine I had never heard of before. Two grey controllers and a game that he rented along with the package: Gradius. We played that thing all weekend before we had to return the system to the rental store. From that point on, I was totally hooked. To this day the NES is still my favourite system. The SNES is probably better overall, but its still a close second to the original. There was just something about the playability of these games...

Just downloaded it. First time play for me. So far its impressive. The fun factor actually increases along with the story, so if you're someone who's just started to play- it does get better. Not sure what my opinion of the whole is yet; of course, I'll figure that out once I beat the thing.
I'm really considering this. That music is freaking amazing sounding- thought I'm not a huge Shooter nut, that may be enough to get me to plunk down the 800 Wii points for this.
Just bought it this morning. I played through to the Grim Reaper. That is one tough sucker. Actually, the worst part of him is getting through the hallway leading up to him. I managed to take him out on my second try (with the cross of course) but I don't think I could repeat that feat so easily the next time. Certainly is a tough game, but not impossible. It just takes a certain amount of replays and memorization to get through the tricky stuff.
I highly recommend this game to anyone interested in the franchise, or good adventure sidescrollers.
Honestly, I find it odd that everyone keeps talking about how hard this game is. Difficult, yes, but not even the realm of Ninja-Gaiden-difficult. I guess since I grew up with this game, I had plenty of discussions/help/team-ups with my brother and kids from school to make it through and memorize the labyrinth locations. Personally, this is a very satisfying game. I'm strongly considering downloading it just so I can go through the 2nd Quest for the first time.
I'll be the first to admit that Super Metroid is possibly the best game ever made, so I don't feel its fair to compare it with any Castlevania/Metroid type games. On its own, this game is good; as part of the Metroid legacy, its sort of a must play for fans. I've never played through the whole thing, so I had to download it today.
I'm actually loving this. Its much better than the translation on the Gameboy Advance (from the Classics line) or the Metroid Prime "extra" version. Reason for that is the VC's ability to save your progress mid-game. That means you don't have to keep restarting with 30 health whenever you take a break.
Its also a different enough experience from Zero Mission that it feels like its a new game. 4 stars from me.
Damo actually says "the sound is nothing special " in his review.
Are you kidding me?
This game actually stands out to me due to its sound. There is some of the best music in any game for the SNES in Gradius III. I was trying to resist downloading it, but I simply could not hold out any longer. Bought it today, and I'm just loving it.
Oh and as far as slow down is concerned, yes, it happens, but it doesn't ruin anything. It sort of feels like a Matrix-esque dynamic, where there is so much going on at once, that you get a chance to respond to all the mayhem.
Just downloaded it. It plays really well. I don't know why there are disclaimers about the game's difficulty. Kirby games really aren't the sort of game you pick up because you want difficulty. Its just a fun playing experience. This was the first time playing this for me, and it certainly was better than some of the other Kirby games.
I downloaded DKC2 first because I never owned the thing back in the cartridge days. I know everyone says its the best of the series, but nothing tops the original for me. Its high quality, plus nostalgia I think. I couldn't take it anymore. I bought it this morning and will play through it before I finish DKC2.
Just downloaded this. It really is a beautiful game. My only point of critique is that the levels are a little short for me. It seems almost a waste that Treasure went through all this trouble to paint spectacular backgrounds when they don't give you a "standard" sized level to enjoy them. Really, the levels are just a point to take a breath before the next boss. In a lot of ways, this plays more like a fighting game than an adventure game, but thankfully, I enjoy both genres.
You haven't completed the game and you give it 3 stars? Are you really a Zelda freak, or is that just an ironic name?
Honestly, this is one of my favourites in the series. I like it better than the first game, better than all of the gameboy games (even Minish Cap!). Only thing that tops this for me are the golden three: Link to the Past, Ocarina and Twilight.
Give this game a chance I say. It really isn't that hard if you play carefully and don't mind getting a game over once and a while. You have unlimited continues, so all you have to do is put your boots back on and go for it. As for the side-scrolling nature of the game, I don't understand why people complain about this. Its like an old-school Super Smash Bros style of game, and people seem to love that series. Zelda is also a series that is all about creativity and change. Not all of the games use the original's overhead view (in fact, most of the best ones don't) so I don't see this as the Black Sheep of the family.
Personally, I have a love affair with his game, so its gotta be a 4.5 out of 5!
As fantastic as Corruption is (and it is a really sweet game) this is and I believe, always will be the high-point of the series. This is sort of the reason why I love the mythology and character so much. I played and finished Metroid II like a million times before this came out and it, but when it did, it was like eating pizza for the first time- truely sublime!
Bought this the other day. Man is it tough. I hate those freaking birds that swoop down! Anyway, I'm at the last boss as I write this, and I had forgotten that you have to go through the entire last level, then fight two bosses all on the same bar of health! The fact that you can continue from anywhere else in the game actually makes the game a little more managable, but boy, the last boss(es) are super tough!
This is actually better (in my opinion) than the original Metroid. It actually has maps of levels! I bought this two days ago and just finished it. It certainly does start off hard, but keep at it! It gets better and easier as you level up. That's right! There is an experience system in a game this old! Who'da thought?
22 posts so far an it seems like just about everyone loves this game. I'm no different. Back in the 80's my brother and I would get into actual fights over this game. That was sweet,
Just bought it due to your reviews. Thanks a ton guys! This is by far one of the more enjoyable games I have ever played for the SNES, and that's saying a lot! I would recommend this game to anyone!

When is NA going to get this game? Doesn't Konami want the extra money? I've been waiting to play this game since I first played Gradius in 1988!

Re: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Just downloaded it. It plays really well. I don't know why there are disclaimers about the game's difficulty. Kirby games really aren't the sort of game you pick up because you want difficulty. Its just a fun playing experience. This was the first time playing this for me, and it certainly was better than some of the other Kirby games.
Re: Donkey Kong Country
I downloaded DKC2 first because I never owned the thing back in the cartridge days. I know everyone says its the best of the series, but nothing tops the original for me. Its high quality, plus nostalgia I think. I couldn't take it anymore. I bought it this morning and will play through it before I finish DKC2.
Re: Alien Soldier
Just downloaded this. It really is a beautiful game. My only point of critique is that the levels are a little short for me. It seems almost a waste that Treasure went through all this trouble to paint spectacular backgrounds when they don't give you a "standard" sized level to enjoy them. Really, the levels are just a point to take a breath before the next boss. In a lot of ways, this plays more like a fighting game than an adventure game, but thankfully, I enjoy both genres.
Re: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Re: Super Metroid
As fantastic as Corruption is (and it is a really sweet game) this is and I believe, always will be the high-point of the series. This is sort of the reason why I love the mythology and character so much. I played and finished Metroid II like a million times before this came out and it, but when it did, it was like eating pizza for the first time- truely sublime!
Re: Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos
Bought this the other day. Man is it tough. I hate those freaking birds that swoop down! Anyway, I'm at the last boss as I write this, and I had forgotten that you have to go through the entire last level, then fight two bosses all on the same bar of health! The fact that you can continue from anywhere else in the game actually makes the game a little more managable, but boy, the last boss(es) are super tough!
Re: Kid Icarus
This is actually better (in my opinion) than the original Metroid. It actually has maps of levels! I bought this two days ago and just finished it. It certainly does start off hard, but keep at it! It gets better and easier as you level up. That's right! There is an experience system in a game this old! Who'da thought?
Re: River City Ransom
This game is truely great. However, I wouldn't say its better than Double Dragon II, that, for me, is the money.
Re: F-Zero X
Here's a question- can you use both the Classic Controler and a Gamecube controller to play multiplayer?
Re: Ice Hockey
22 posts so far an it seems like just about everyone loves this game. I'm no different. Back in the 80's my brother and I would get into actual fights over this game. That was sweet,
Re: Kirby's Dream Course
Just bought it due to your reviews. Thanks a ton guys! This is by far one of the more enjoyable games I have ever played for the SNES, and that's saying a lot! I would recommend this game to anyone!
