Re: Don't Get Too Attached to 3DS Name, says Iwata

Hmm.. StereoVision or something like that? Not very snappy though :/
Nah, I can't think of any good names. It'll probably be something unpredictable.
Don't trademarks have to be registered in advance though? Or is that only necessary for software ratings?

Re: Software Pirates Beware: No 3DS Booty For You

Kimiko

I would blame a lack of European sales more on a lack of good titles here. Only some games make it out of Japan to N-America, and only some of those make it over to Europe. We have to import N-American games (and Japanese ones if you understand the language). If game companies make it that hard for gamers to get their fix legally, it's no surprise that some resort to illegal copies that can be downloaded without shipping costs and delays. Considering that any and all security measures get defeated sooner rather than later (seriously, even mentioning them is like saying 'I dare you to crack it'), the only way to counter piracy is to make it easier for people to obtain legal copies. Nintendo would better invest in speedy and convenient distribution infrastructure than in useless anti-piracy measures.

Re: First Impressions: Illust Logic

Kimiko

Illust Logic is what the game was called back when I played it in the '90s. Pity that the DS versions don't do large images like 30×30, 40×40 and up. Higher resolution images are more satisfying when you see them completed.

How is this program at auto-solving puzzles / helping the player? I hated that Nintendo's Picross automatically filled in squares I wasn't certain about yet myself. That took the fun out of it for me.

Tip: If you want machine translations of Japanese text, please use Yahoo's Babelfish, not Google. Google's translations are notoriously inaccurate. http://babelfish.yahoo.com/

Re: AlphaBounce

Yes, this game is really addicting. Like @IanUniacke, I spent most of the weekend playing this game, and I'm still discovering new planets and equipment. At the start the game seemed a little too easy, but once you get to a few different planets you'll find that you really need any advantage you can find.

Randomly generated maps? Maybe for the space maps, but the planet maps are definitely designed.

Is the translation that bad? I can tell that it was done by someone whose native language is French, but it doesn't seem really awful.

The forced wait during the trivia screens is quite annoying, but you get used to it.

This is definitely one of the best games on DSiWare.

AlphaBounce is awesome. I've been playing it for three days now, and still discovering new planets and gear. That thing with the game being too easy happened only at the beginning. Once you get to some different planets you'll be glad for any help you find.

Playing AlphaBounce now. It's a fairly good Arkanoid-like. Like @KDR_11k said, the powerups make things a little too easy at times, but that might be because I'm playing Easy mode atm (I just picked the female character at the start, which turned out to be Easy mode).

Re: Review: Avalon Code (DS)

Kimiko

Why the review now, this long after its release?

I've had this game since last year (like many European gamers I import most of my games from N-America). I think it's one of the best RPGs on the DS. Just as good as some of the best Final Fantasys.

My only regret was that my character couldn't get more than friendship with any of the girls except the two spirits. Why do game makers keep excluding us lesbian/gay folks?

The paging through the book of prophecy was a little tedious near the end when I was looking for some rarer items, but nothing too vexing.

My rating of this game would be 9/10.

Re: AlphaBounce Breaks Away On DSiWare

Kimiko

AlphaBounce is coming to the DSi? Nice
I've looked at the website before, but IIRC you had to register and buy game credit for the Motion Twin games collection to actually try it. The game did look interesting though, and I still haven't bought Arkanoid..

Re: Review: Elemental Masters (DSiWare)

Kimiko

On impulse I bought this game last night.
It is indeed almost exactly the same card game as that in Final Fantasy VIII. The amount of strategy required (planning numerous moves ahead) makes the outcome of a 'battle' seem rather random to me.
In retrospect, this wasn't such a great purchase. FF8 is available for only €9.99 over on the PSP store, and with that you not only get tons more RPG for your money, but you can also mod the cards into useful items.
