Re: Sega's Executive Director Wants Sonic Games And Movies To "Surpass Mario"

@HaileySheridon well that’s the thing, to surpass Mario the mediocrity needs to stop. And the fans into this game aren’t even into the gameplay itself as they know for Frontiers it’s the most shallow part of the game. Now you’re saying Sonic Generations had a lot of hype around it. That was true but the stigma wasn’t even close to what Frontiers was. How long was the Sonic game before Generations? Just a year. A year isn’t long. And the hype around generations was purely for nostalgia of Classic Sonic. Now compare that to Frontiers, when was the game before that? Exactly five years. That’s a pretty long wait so it’s fair to say the fans starving for a Sonic video game to come out in that span as nothing major was happening with the guy in terms of video games. Frontiers had the build up over Generations. Which can be applied to Sonic Unleashed as that was only released two years after Sonic 06.

Now let’s go even further. Both Unleashed and Generations didn’t take that long to come out. So it’s fair to say that no one was starving over anything. Now for Unleashed, it came after 06, so it’s fair to say people got excited to see that Sega was trying everything to make the fans forget that game. And despite the critical response, on its own Unleashed was a solid game and I’d actually argue the most ambitious Sonic game so far. No let’s get to Generations, that came out after Sonic Colors which is considered a good game, so the gap between Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations I think it’s fair to say there definitely wasn’t any starvation for Sonic games.

Now let’s get into Sonic Frontiers, which was a follow up to Sonic Forces, a bad game, which in turn was a follow up to Sonic Lost World, a mediocre game. And the gap for these games were pretty long. Lost World to Forces was four years. Forces to Frontiers was five years. With Sega releasing two mediocre games for some time it’s fair to say that alone built up way more hype for Frontiers than Unleashed and Generations cause of Sega dropped the ball on this one, that was it. And the marketing for Frontiers was amped up way more compared to Unleashed and Generations. Now you could make the same argument that Unleashed was following up two bad games as well, however that’s still four years total vs nine for Frontiers.

@HaileySheridon it’s the hype and honeymoon phase. Once that’s over you’ll realize that the game was not good at all and people are just caving for the free DLC that should’ve been in the base game. The hype and stigma around the game are the reason why it did so well. Not for the game itself. Cause think about it, the real meat is the game was the cyberstages. Which is just reused levels from previous games. Nothing new or original.

@Frailbay30 100% agree with you. Unfortunately nowadays it seems it’s the fans that define what Sonic is which is a very bad thing. And getting more fans like Ian Flynn helps validate the insecurities of the fan base which sadly affects the direction the series is headed negatively.

I would love to go back to a simpler time where Sonic was just cool. The ideal you inspire to be. Simple storylines with no dramatic nonsense. Unfortunately that’s gone now.
