I would recommend just playing the ones that look appealing enough.
For me, that translates to roughly 350 Nes games (~60 RPGs), 350 Snes games (~130 RPGs), 150 GB/C games (~35 RPGs), 80 GBA games (~30 RPGs), 30 SMS/GG games, 100 MD games (~10 RPGs), and 50 PCE games (~15 RPGs).
As far as I'm concerned, the modern stuff doesn't even begin to hold up against the classics.
