You can hold R while chatting to characters (f.ex Blathers), that way the text will speed up, but you can still click A when you wanna go to the next speech bubble (as opposed to holding B, which you'll have to release in order to press A to go to the next bubble, from my experience). So really, if you wanna speed through dialogue, R is the better option.
