Honestly, it makes me think the reason they say the NX is not a replacement for Wii U is because it may be some kind of home computer or something. Instead of just a gaming console.
I'm not sure how I feel about it being both a portable and home console unit. That's a cool idea, but it really limits what the dedicated "home" console games are going to look like I'd think. Or it would drive up the price if the controller is a handheld device and the console is it's own thing.
I personally also think that, as cool as that sounds, it doesn't make much sense. They have never really done badly with their portable devices and 3DS is still doing great. I would think that the unification of their handheld and console divisions is not because the new console is a hybrid but rather because they want to unify the experience. Like, sell a handheld device where you can download apps like on iOS that can also be used on the dedicated home console. Think, like an iPad can download iOS games and so can a iPhone and so can an iPod Touch.
That would make a lot of sense. They're gonna have an OS like iOS that will work across the new NX, an eventual handheld and their new mobile games. But the system itself a hybrid? I don't think so.
I think the system itself will utilize some kind of unique feature though that nobody has predicted. No matter how you look at it, it doesn't look like Nintendo intends to make PS4 level games for the NX if they intend to do something like that. However, they could still make it capable of doing that so third parties could port games. But I see that as unlikely.
I can't say that I am not excited for the NX, but I am merely cautiously optimistic. They're not saying things that get me overly excited but you can never count Nintendo out and can never tell what they'll do. I hope it's something cooler then we are speculating though.
In any case, I really hope whatever Mario games they are working on for it are better then the ones we got on the Wii U so far (I'm specifically talking main series games). I was underhwelmed by NSMBWii U and 3D World. I could really go for a Sunshine sequel that's been rumored though!
You know... I think I can guess what NX's secret tech is. Think about it. Nintendo is going mobile. There are rumors the have worked with android and apple. The thing is rumored to be a hybrid portable device. Years ago they praised the iOS infrastructure.
It's going to be a system that works with your cellphone to cut costs out. Think like a controller where you slip your phone into a slot and load an app that turns the system on. A dedicated app that connects to the system. Pop your iPhone into the controller and load the NX app and voice control could work. A connected Nintendo App Store could make it where you download games at work and come home to play them. Voice control on your phone means you could just say "play Zelda" and it loads the game on the console. And free apps that work with the games double as street pass like games on the go. Zelda mobile game that you play at work can also net you goodies or rupees or something for when you get home. A fully mobile system that could be as powerful as a PS4 or Xbone without the added cost of those cool features since you already have a really advanced piece of tech in your smartphone.

That's what NX is.
