@Bass_X0 don’t know how they’d do it with this tech sadly - I think the 3DS would’ve been the window. Although I guess it could work with the labo VR in theory - so there’s always the thinnest sliver of hope.
@marsbitrona some in the comments here certainly. I can’t say I have suffered from that either but I find it hard to imagine that much smoke without fire. Perhaps we are in the minority!
@CartoonDan oh, that is sad! I can definitely see how that might have happened to folks trying it when it arrived. I came to it much later so didn’t have that expectation going in. Joy is the word I most associate with Nintendo - their games have had such a tremendous, positive impact on my life in so many ways. Hope you’re enjoying their lovely, latest joy filled machine.
@ParadoxFawkes it’s a real golden age for mad little consoles that do tonnes of cool things. Thanks for the heads up! I’ll check out your recommendations.
@sevex yeah thankfully it’s not too bad price wise. It’s rock hard but a good time and its design really draws you in. Takes time and patience to get used to it but is satisfying when you start to get better. Can’t imagine I’ll ever quite be good enough to reach the end though!
@Djreisat oh wow! Yeah, the snes version is still my favourite (4 maaaay be level with it), but very curious to give it a go. You’re a proper dedicated VB enthusiast! Very cool. Have you seen the handheld mod? That thing is mad but sadly axes the 3D effect.
@Djreisat absolutely. No distractions. Teleroboxer is definitely the one that sucks me in the most, even though it’s not my favourite game on the system. And the depth illusion is still pretty nifty.
@speedracer216 nostalgia is a powerful thing. I think it stands shoulder to shoulder though. That’s the second comment about lying back with it on your face! Am I the only VB user that hasn’t done this?!
@Ryu_Niiyama thanks my friend! Always happy to chat games and lucky enough to have a bit of free time to engage (dad of two - doesn’t always happen). Health is always paramount. I do dread that one day the switch will flick and I won’t be able to enjoy my little red weirdo anymore - but nothings worth risking your well-being.
@Tempestryke I can safely say that the rose tint for me is not a thing, still enjoy it to this day! But yeah, just a cursory glance at the comments shows what a massively divisive console it was and still is!
@sevex yeah - had a similar experience playing Mario 64 with a nine year old. Tried to explain why it was so amazing. Didn’t hit home 😅 I’d recommend teleroboxer, 3D Tetris and Mario clash if you ever think of expanding your collection. All pretty reasonably priced and all a good time.
@bigpale oh god - that’s hardcore! I love to dip back into wario land every so often. Fun game and looks great, particularly give the visual limitations. Think you’ll ever expand your library?
@JHDK yeah. The theme I’m getting from this thread is that Nintendo putting it up to try in blockbuster was actually counter productive to its sales strategy 😅
@somnambulance I can totally see that. Because I love the sensation the 3D generates it probably bumps a point onto the games that use it well for me. There’s certainly nothing genre defining and you’d be extremely hard pushed to say that anything there is a definitive must play - I’m just glad there’s games that I do enjoy so I can enjoy the system too. Ultimately the experience of the console itself is what brings me the most joy out of it, if that makes sense.
@UltraZelda64 that’s pretty much how I summed it up. I think it’s worth trying if you enjoy the experience of Nintendo when they get a bit weird, but it’s certainly not a must-do and really isn’t for everyone. I love it but it’s also pretty low down the pecking order for me too.
@Coalescence YES! I wrote about it initially but had to trim the article down (I waffle A LOT) it’s a kind of middle ground between GB and SNES and has got some great tracks. The Mario tennis music has a sort of Super Mario kart vibe - if a little less full sounding. But because it’s so immersive and has that crisp sound with the headset it works.
It is a big oversight with clash, but it is a good experience nonetheless. If you can get to the later stages it’s frantic and thrilling and a lot of fun because it’s well built and handles really well. Love how they adapted the 2D gameplay too - it’s somehow exactly the same but totally different. Very clever. Typical Nintendo, in a good way 😅
@WaveBoy Mario tennis definitely isn’t as fleshed out as it could be but I do enjoy it. Amazing you found Jack bros! I’d be interested to see it make a comeback in the modern gaming landscape and what they’d do with it now. Even the first boss skipping across the pond in wario land looks fantastic - it’s definitely the most well rounded experience on there. Don’t think I’ll ever get rid of mine.
@ParadoxFawkes 100%. Such a shame. Someone commenting that you could try emulating it with red/blue for 3D. Interesting thought! Thinking about getting a miyoo mini, how are you finding it?
@Vexx234 I was a staunch snes soldier in the gritty snes/mega drive console war days. VB never made it to these shores - had never even heard of it and was just serendipitous that I found one in my teens as I began to collect consoles (when it was a flipping affordable hobby).
@Zidentia I always thought the 3D on the 3DS worked well - that starfox story isn’t hyperbole! Who knows what they could’ve done with more resources poured into it. I’d love to see a return of its library somehow. A VB mini? Would you buy one?
@JJtheTexan I know - I’ll forever be annoyed that they didn’t do that. Mine lives in my living room. “What’s that?!” - let me show you. And grab a sick bag 😅 not had that side effect myself, such a shame that it’s a common occurrence for users.
@HammerGalladeBro it’s certainly not for everyone - but I’d always take the experience with the 3D than without it. Definitely pick up wario land if you can - it’s not too pricey on the second hand market. Jack bros is insane though. For the price of it a flash cart is actually just the best option. I got lucky with my copy.
@Divide_and_Wander hey, can’t argue with profit. I can’t imagine anyone would be so lucky these days. Haven’t seen one in the wild for years now, and not a hint of anything to do with one in a charity shop or something similar. It’s a shame the second hand market is so prohibitive to people enjoying it.
@NintendoWife I think you’re right - they feel much more likely to embrace the obscure these days. Although as it was labelled a ‘failure’ maybe it still would’ve been a stretch too far. Massive shame. Would’ve bought a collection day one.
@iLikeUrAttitude never suggested otherwise my friend, anyone is welcome to define their terms as a fan of something. As someone who owns and enjoys one, I merely suggest that anyone who likes Nintendo’s ventures into the weird may enjoy this.
@Westlondonmist niiiiiiiice. Similar experience myself. I think it’s easier to love it if that’s the experience than having to cough up hundreds for it these days.
@tektite_captain huh, full colour would’ve been very interesting. Particularly something like wario land. I do think the limitation on something like teleroboxer is actually beneficial, focuses the gameplay and experience. I don’t think anything could’ve saved it - but maybe would’ve given it a bit of a longer life.
@StevenH steady on Steven 😂 as I said - it’s about the experience of it. It’s a weird piece of kit that was really ambitious at the time. I love it, but I’m obviously not going to choose it over tears of the kingdom. And I don’t need to - because there’s room in my life for both!

@bigpale ah no! I have a big old bundle of consoles and I just can’t stand to get rid of them for this reason!
Re: Talking Point: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?
@JJtheTexan 100% - people love to try it.
Re: Talking Point: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?
@IceDomino terribly sad that it tarnished his reputation - particularly when it had no business doing so. An absolute legend of gaming hardware.
Re: Talking Point: As A Nintendo Fan, Do You Really Need To Play The Virtual Boy?
@EriXz definitely a commercial failure. I don’t think they’ve rushed a piece of hardware quite so much since.
