@HexagonSun I think that’s because the leaps aren’t the same as snes to GameCube, for example. The same console generation gap as wii to switch. The changes aren’t quite so drastic, so I think we clock the passage of time a little differently.
@LadyCharlie ah - but his launch platform isn’t supported! You can get nes games on your switch but they originate on a retro console. I’m curious - at what point do you think he’d cross the threshold? Maybe if his new game has a new art style? Or is 3D?
@boxyguy that’s true. it’s unsupported now - so probably could fall into that bracket. And shovel knight launched on the 3ds, so if anything that lends more to the argument!
@NinChocolate oh I like this - but many since have emulated shovel knight - and if they’re emulating him and he’s ten years old, then surely that makes him retro as they’re copying an older fashion. Even if he’s copying an older fashion.
@Vyacheslav333 you don’t think it’s a retro game at this point? I think if someone who was into games said to me now that they were getting in to shovel knight I’d think - that’s a blast from the past.
King of cards is ace. Drew up plans to make a working deck but tragically never followed through!
@thecricket that’s great! Glad you’re enjoying it too. If you wanted to see everything there’s dozens of hours of gameplay in there. Well worth the low price.
@Kotorcom I love championing the home brew scene as much as possible. Some incredibly talented devs out there making new experiences for consoles we love. Really thankful NL have given me the opportunity to shine a light on it here. Did you see the article about the home the showcase? Well worth a look.
@vcmacleod I made a full overworld map for The Legend of Zelda when I was a kid - still got it and use it whenever I return to the game! I love this idea but as it isn’t technically part of the game and not everyone will have access to it I wanted to focus the review onto the experience of the game alone. Definitely a good option though.
@Magrane that’s fair. Though I’m no stranger to those limitations in some older games it is something that doesn’t quite mesh with modern gaming sensibilities and this is - for all intents and purposes, a modern release. So I chose to view it through that lens in this respect. I also felt it was a bit at odds with the game’s core mechanic of rewarding repetition. It is a small gripe for me, but I’d still recommend picking it up if you enjoy gameboy games.
@Poodlestargenerica I think that’s the case. It’s an incredibly ambitious game and I get the impression that it pushes GB studio to the limit. But ultimately the rough edges don’t break the experience and if it means more quality output for the console that can only be a good thing.
@mcmicken thank you for your impeccable use of TMKB. Nothing quite as intense as playing with your spouse. Particularly if you decide to wager a chore that neither of you want to tackle 😈
@AccessibleDaydream my wife and I sort of did this! We have notes in our phone of themed Grand Prix course lists. A holiday one that starts with Sunshine airport, followed by toad harbour, then cheep cheep beach, etc. it was a lot of fun. Would definitely make a great feature in game.
@SillyG my friend - I gave 7 hours of my life, can you not spare 7 minutes to read? 😂 I did think about it but having never live streamed it felt maybe a tad over ambitious to start with this.
@120frames-I’ve done the maths. If you average 3 minutes a track this would take about 40 hours - not including eating, bathroom breaks, sleeping, etc. Please don’t do that 😅
@Aurumonado it was a shame that the points get broken up. But at least it only requires two setups. I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t patch it in but doing all 96 is pretty mad.
@MeloMan used to do it all the time in uni with smash bros. 12 hours? No problem! Get a group round and you might surprise yourself - and let me know if you manage it!
@batmanbud2 tbf Vancouver was definitely a preferred tour track. Mitch pointed out that it felt like they weren’t really made for this game, which of course they weren’t. And I think other previous smk tracks translate better because the core gameplay is the same there, unlike mk tour. Did you play the mobile game?

Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@GarlicGuzzler in the context of them being ‘babies’ - yes.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Overzeal that fair. Hypothetical for you - if the upcoming game happens to be 3D or a drastically different art style - would that change things?
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?

Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Rainbowfire excellent.
Also you’ve provided an opportunity to post ‘Y can’t Metroid crawl’, for which I’m always thankful.

@HammerGalladeBro 💯

I think that makes sense.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@AdolBannings-Laylee this. Leaps in gaming are smaller these days but there have been leaps - and the game originated on an obsolete console.

Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Matl what’s the period of time that qualifies it as such for you? Not sniping - genuinely curious.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@AdolBannings-Laylee oh man. This cut me deep.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@JohnnyMind me too! We often seem to agree Johnny 😅
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Roibeard64 true - but ten years after the show wraps would it be a retro show?
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@NielsNL not so my friend! I pitched it because I love my man shovel knight and wanted to write something with the anniversary coming up.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Lofoten the leaps in gaming are less nowadays, but I’d say things have moved on since its release?
I guess the question is - is neo-retro now retro in the same way post modern is retro when compared to post post modern.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@MH4 😂 with til you’re nearly 40 mate - everything I like is retro
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@roy130390 ah but how many years? The game did come out on now obsolete hardware.
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Overzeal headline: Does 2+2=4? The answer may surprise you…
It’s a fair point - but surely that would be the case with any option piece, no? What counts him out for you?
Re: Talking Point: Is Shovel Knight Now A Retro Gaming Icon?
@Kraven I absolutely adore it. I’d count him up there with some of the other gaming greats.

@belmont there’s an insane amount of replayability. I think backers will be pleased with the return on their investment.

@Chopper25 nobody should have to endure a difficult workspace. If there’s truth to this is certainly would be a shame.

@amongtheworms isn’t this what they’re doing in that first scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey?

@JohnnyMind it was great playing it on a handheld. I hope you enjoy it!
