@CaviarMeths You could say all N64 games are dated, that is what normally happens with console life cycles! As for Goldeneye, comparing it to The World is Not Enough is just wrong. Goldeneye defined (for many) a huge genre of gaming and still retains that epic nostalgic feeling when the word 'video game' is mentioned.
Smartphone transition would dilute the Nintendo experience and I'm glad that they can see that! This company holds so much integrity and passion for us as customers and fans. To be honest, touch screen is horrible to play any platformers on in my opinion. Button bashing all the way!
Creating Nintendo games on other platforms would be like throwing gold in to a coal mine. Keep the gold with the gold! Nintendo's appeal stems from their consoles as much as their games. Cannot wait for Christmas
@unrandomsam I think you misunderstand the whole agenda. Copyright DOES protect program code, but that doesn't exclude a plethora of other things: concepts, music, character similarity etc. So no matter if he used his own code or not, he did not copyright that for himself and on top of that, he broke copyright law in other forms against Nintendo. Nintendo actually paid licensing fees to Atari to create a pong clone, they did not rip it off, you can research that yourself and find out if you like. And as for Zynga, they do get in trouble for copyrighting as well, although they have the money and time to fight it back and almost get away with it. Plus, they don't have direct clones of games, they alter a game style and concept so much that they can argue it is original. They might be a pretty lame company for doing it though, I agree with that.
@Tryken Well said! I do think that level design would be diluted badly if they did release an official game like this. The original levels created by the game designers are always so well thought out, it would be a shame to see them become over used and stale.
@unrandomsam Copyright infringement is much more than you think. Concepts and resemblance are BIG factors of infringement law, both of which were portrayed on this website. Don't get me wrong, it sucks that Nintendo shut it down, but I can guarantee you that they did it in their best interests, lawsuit or not.
@Tasuki Not necessarily. Copyright law is massive and can be used to file suits even against concepts. It is the blatent similarity (I think) that got poor Josh in trouble. Regardless of money, there is a great deal of thought put into patent law and the protection of brands or products. I understand what you mean about making money though, he didn't do it to get rich.
I understand Nintendos justification, although it does seem harmless in this case, the implications for something like this could be damaging to any company. They have to protect brand image yet at the same time, Josh didn't mean to cause any harm with it. It does generate publicity for both parties!
Brilliant article! Perfect to help with my essay on the international market trade of video games for college You can't please everyone, but i'm glad Nintendo are trying. It's what separates them from the rest of the sheep.
@Guitardude7 It is not a trailer for the Wii-U. Regardless of that, it is accentuated that the console IS the Wii-U with the titles and descriptions of the new features.
@element187 I totally agree with you. It is in their best interests to attend to ALL of the different product positions and the segment that they fit in to. If it was directed at me (someone who doesn't play Wii-Sports), the trailer would be entirely different. Nintendo's marketing is nicely traditional with a new experiential approach and something I think we can all appreciate!
@LunaticPandora If they stopped chasing the crowd, then they stop any chance of segmenting the market and keeping prospective customers happy. These people are their target, not necessarily you or me, it is a fairly direct advert for a particular consumer. I have no interest in it, but I still can appreciate how they have mediated the message.
Looking forward to Christmas day: 2DS, Zelda and hopefully Pokemon X! It seems like a great handheld perfectly positioned for people like me who don't have a lot of money and who don't really engage with 3D. In saying that though, I think Nintendo's plans for 3D are well thought out and again show the initiative that the company is famous for.
@ex-sight On the contrary, the Wii-U has been sold succesfully to the target market, which is not exactly us. This console has been positioned as family oriented entertainment, unlike the 3DS which has a range of segments. Learn a thing or two about marketing before you say it's bad.
Currently i'm studying the marketing of the video game industry as part of my masters degree, so this is quite an interesting read. Nintendo have of course marketed both the Wii-U and 3DS accordingly, which is why the intended position of each product is actually slightly different, thus leading to why we have been exposed to each on a varying scale. However, I do agree that Nintendo might do well to re-examine the actual position of the Wii-U. Furthermore, they may need to promote the experiential benefits of the console, rather than the features alone. Sorry for sounding so grown up and naf, but it is interesting to me and I intend to make a career out of it! The kid inside me is screaming: 'MORE GAMES FOR WII-U!'. Regardless of all this, I love Nintendo, they have a culture unlike any other company in the industry and I respect that.
Brilliant game and innovative for the time of release. Rare did a great job on the 3rd person mechanic and the overall re-playability of the game and the best thing was, it was pretty challenging. Finding the tribals was tough as hell! Great review and nice to see a blast from the past.
Amazing job! I know some people don't like the gold flakes, although I think it adds to the colour scheme. It is different and better, just what we need. Just think of it as a million tiny Navi's screaming: 'HEY!'.
@kereke12 That is far from stupid. Nintendo have to uphold their status as family friendly, so why would they allow this to go on for longer than it should? Suspending Letterbox is obviously to allow them to find out how to tackle the problem. It is not a big deal and they are doing what is right.
Big props to Nintendo! They always deliver great games and brilliantly unique hardware, they deserve the hard earned sales for the 3DS. I would love to know out of interest, the age demographic of 3DS/2DS users. Nintendo seemed to have tapped into a pretty vast market! Good times ahead.
@GreatPlayer I don't think diluting their market share with smartphone ports of game demos is such a good idea. Positive reinforcement to games and hardware with clever pricing will keep Nintendo ahead.
@Nintendude789 I see your point, but adaptation is necessary for even Nintendo. I'm assuming most people who comment here are Nintendo fans, although not forgetting there is a young market segment that will grow up using smartphones and tablets, so positioning Nintendo right in the middle is a good strategy. I too would love them to stay purely with handheld hardware, but I don't think it will happen!
@Dr_Corndog I agree with you. Although, do not forget that games are subject to being enjoyed by different segments of end users, hence why there may be so many in existence. On the positive end of things, isn't it nice to have the option to play all of the games eventually?

@hydeks It is meant to be funny, not a concrete comparison of the 2 consoles.

Very nice! Luigi has a large fan base and considering if this was legit, it would be quite popular with DS users.
