For what it’s worth, there has been a June Direct every year now since 2018.
And considering we haven’t had a full Direct since February, and we’re in the summer gaming season where most of the big developers announce what they’re working on, it would surprise me more if we didn’t see anything from Nintendo…
@Dezzy70 yes, to all of the above.. Would be nice if we got a Direct next week, with the next wave of tracks available to download as soon as the Direct finishes..
As for a wish list for the Direct - I’d love to see an unexpected announcement of a Nintendo IP (take your pick)
As much as I love seeing footage on games we know about, the biggest excitement for me is when the big games get announced in the first place (although Prime 4 and Bayo 3 were announced FAR too early)
@samuelvictor I’m also fully self aware that I’m a hypocrite by saying these are overpriced considered how many times I’ve previously brought Sonic 1 and 2.
I also think I must own just about every version of (NES) Super Mario Bros!
I’ve had Persona Strikers delivered today and have Three Hopes being delivered this afternoon, and have Pocky and Rocky Reshrined coming at the start of July, so I’ve got plenty to keep me going to worry about whether or not to pick this up just yet..
@NotArmani I agree and disagree with you on that. On one hand, It would be nice as it would offer a bit more variety and value for money.
On the other, they’re not really classic games or comparable to the 16 bit games, so including them would bring down the quality of the overall game selection.
@Banjo- end of the day, the main thing is that YOU enjoy it. I can’t tell you otherwise! Personally, I’d be happier to wait for a physical version, and then for a sale, before picking it up.
Looking at your comments and those of @samuelvictor, I’m curious as to whether I’d be able to tell the difference in how this collection plays compared to other versions.
And as I’m a sucker for legacy content like museum modes as well as decent work put into the presentation of a package (the intro movie and menus look slick!) Also - as I only own Sonic CD on the Xbox, I’m still very much interested in checking this out, although it can wait for a while.
@samuelvictor I guess that’s where we differ! I think I play Sonic games far more casually and from memory, the versions in the Mega Drive collection were playable. I still have the Mega Drive carts, so I try and play on original hardware when possible…
I suppose value is subjective from person to person - who am I to tell you or anyone else that this is in no way worth the price being charged? I’m sure I’ve paid over the odds plenty of times previously for products..
@Banjo- which you’re absolutely entitled to, but I sometimes think the bias shown by hardcore fans can sometimes cloud their judgement.
I’m glad you enjoy this. They’re all great games, but the price on this is steep. And the fact Sega are charging even more for menu animations and additional music is downright disgusting.
Would fans of been equally happy if we had the previous ‘best’ versions of these games ported to this collection, with all the extras, at a cheaper price?
I think a lot of Sonic fans would of taken it regardless, it seems to be one of ‘those’ kinds of fan bases were any kind of criticism is ignored..
None of the games in the Mega Drive collection needed to have the ‘worked from the ground up’. There were 50 games that all played well, for a bargain price.
Same with the Pac-Man museum collection. Did any of the reviews mention that it’s a shame that those games weren’t worked from the ground up? No. Because 14 games for £18 is phenomenal value for money.
I’m glad you’re enjoying Origins, but for the vast majority out there, they won’t notice, or care, about the extra work put into this. Heck - I have the Sonic Collection on the GameCube and emulated or not, they all play fantastically well without any extra work needing to be put into them.
@Banjo- I’m not comparing this to 3D All Stars - that was a lazy emulation job, and absolutely should of included Galaxy 2.
This isn’t about comparing it to anything Nintendo have done.
I’m simply stating that other collections offer far more value for money - £25 for 50 Mega Drive games, £18 for 14 Pac-Man games, £12 for 6 Mega Man games…the list goes on.
@samuelvictor to the vast majority of people out there though, the work put into the games won’t be noticeable.
I’ve got the original trilogy on countless devices, and haven’t felt that a single one of those ports plays badly. They’ve all been a joy to control.
Is the work put into this collection really THAT noticeable?
To prove I’m not here to argue - I want to eventually pick this up; ideally when/if it comes via a physical edition, and at a reasonable port. I absolutely enjoy these games, and Sonic CD isn’t as represented compared to the Mega Drive trilogy.
But to me, I get the feeling that I’ll experience the games in pretty much the same manner as before..
@Banjo- not here to argue, but the collection is £33 - £37 if you want the luxury of adding menu animations and extra music. Sega are absolutely fleecing their fan base and the extra £4 for the ‘deluxe’ content which really shouldn’t be a chargeable extra proves this.
For the sake of comparison - Mega Drive classics is priced around £25. It contains 50 games, including Sonic 1 and 2.
The recently released Pac-Man museum contains 14 games for £17.
There is little to no justification why this should be priced the way it is. And I get it - new intro, a couple of new modes and a museum.
But it really isn’t anything that we haven’t seen countless times up to this point.
I’m not bemoaning these games - they’re all bonafide classics - but looking at certain comments online you’d think Sega have reinvented the wheel here…
@nocdaes looking at how blindly rabid a lot of Sonic fans can be, I’d honestly say yes - the hardcore fans out there are rejoicing over this without really acknowledging that these games have been re released too many times over the years to count.
They’re classic games and I’m sure they play great in this collection, but it really isn’t anything that we haven’t seen before.
@Banjo- a timeless must have?
Come on buddy..I love these games, but let’s not forget how many times they’ve been re released over the years.
Previous Sonic collections included more games, yet Sonic fans are getting rabid about this. I don’t care how good the emulation is, how nice the intro is, or the museum extras - most of these games have been done to death multiple times over at this stage..
If this comes out in physical form I’m sure I’ll pick it up, but it won’t offer much that I, or most seasoned Sonic fans haven’t experienced before…
With all due respect, Sega are charging £33 for games that have released at a fraction of the price previously.
Emulation, and extras aside, let’s be real here - they have the audacity to charge an extra £4 for the Deluxe Edition - these should have been included in the standalone price, no surprise considering Sega were charging £5 per character on Monkey Ball DLC.
If you want to talk about value for money - Pac-Man Museum is £15 cheaper at £17.99 and contains 14 games.
The Mega Drive collection (which also includes Sonic 1 and 2) is £25 and contains FIFTY games.
There is no real reason why this should be priced at £33…
Heck - the previous Sonic collections on the GameCube contained more games than what are contained here…
12 cups in total, we’ve had 2 so far, meaning there are five more waves between now and the end of 2023 - 18 months between now and December ‘23, and it’s been just over 3 months since the first DLC, meaning an average of around 3 and a half months for each new wave if they’re going to keep consistent..
Surely we’re due the next batch of DLC for MK8 Deluxe soon?
We’re getting six waves of DLC that will finish at the end of 2023 - by my calculation, that should mean new updates every 3 and a half months to 4 months or so on average if Nintendo are consistent with when they launch them - the first wave launched in March 18th, so it’s been just over three months now..
@Orokosaki Admire your courage - i've got some 1,100 movies and a shed load of TV boxsets on DVD/blu-ray, about 500 video games across countless consoles, and a good couple of thousand CD albums - all the while, all of the above are increasing which means one day I think i'll ultimately end up running out of space...
I could make a small fortune getting rid of what I own, but like you said, letting go is hard to do..
@Orokosaki Thanks! I've got FE:Three Hopes and Persona 5 Strikers coming tomorrow, and Pocky & Rocky Reshrined coming in a couple of weeks, but i'm still fighting with my willpower in regards to whether or not I give in and add ANOTHER game to the collection...
Think i've got problems - my physical Switch collection has just passed the 100 game mark, and even a slight want of a game usually ends up with me buying it.
Any word on whether or not Capcom Fighting Collection will get a physical release over here? I've seen it on Play Asia but it's £58 with delivery - I know it would be a fair bit cheaper if it got a wider release through all the other well-known online retailers...
@__jamiie to be fair, I think most kids in the 90s wouldn't of been too concerned as to whether or not their console boxes were in pristine condition when they got them at Christmas or whenever else - as a child I threw away all my console and game boxes, and as an adult, it mortifies me..
@samuelvictor absolutely - most the time i've seen boxes on eBay for older consoles they're slightly tatty or battered, so finding one in good condition can be difficult..
I'm not sure how protected buyers are on Etsy in relation to buying a product and it not meeting expectations, but it might be worthwhile seeing if there are any YouTube videos of people buying console boxes from Etsy sellers to get an idea of what to expect outside of the reviews given.
May well give in and start collecting some of the boxes - in hindsight, I wish i'd kept all my old console and game boxes, and manuals..
Got my limited edition Three Hopes on its way to me tomorrow - I've pre ordered Pocky & Rocky Reshrined but the physical edition doesn't launch for a couple of weeks yet..
Brought Persona 5 Strikers a few days back too as it's dropped to around £20 at most retailers online, so might give that a go.
'Proper' summer holidays where we got 6 weeks of sunshine when off school (at least that's what my memory is telling me..)
The toys and trends - POGS, Micro Machines, Mighty Max, Monster In My Pocket, Boglins..
Only 4 terrestrial TV channels, but so much quality packed on those channels that it makes todays UK TV look pathetic in comparison - Saturday night TV was a blast, and shows on Channel 4 like TFI Friday, Big Breakfast and the like were so brash and in your face, but they were so fun to watch...
Freebies in breakfast cereal, and none of this sugar free nonsense being served up now.
90s Nickelodeon - Ren & Stimpy, Doug, Hey Arnold!, Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, Rugrats, Kenan & Kel, Sister Sister
A real mixture of music on the radio and in the charts; Britpop, dance, indie, bubblegum pop
Always get nostalgic for the 90s as it was the era I grew up in; the magic of Christmas' as a child, action figures, far less political correctness...take me back there...
@samuelvictor While I can't find the SFII Turbo bundle, there are certain sellers on Etsy who sell produced console boxes - I can't vouch for the quality as I haven't brought any, but judging by the reviews, there are a lot of happy customers...
Been wanting to get NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube console boxes for a while now for my collection...
@victordamazio Also - one positive aspect of physical game biyong…If you’re not a collector per se, you can always resell old games online once you’ve done with them - you don’t get that option on a digital purchase.
Also - sometimes second hand purchases of games are a lot cheaper than the same price of the digital version. It also uses a lot less memory to store a game that’s (mainly) on a game card than it is to download the full file.
Also - it’s purely psychological, but I love the feel of playing a game on the original hardware with the original controllers over playing it on modern hardware. I know the games are the same, but the ‘feel’ of it is just so much more satisfying to me..
@victordamazio I hear you on the above - Extremely valid points in all of the above. I guess it’s a personal choice and I fully get that some people are less into physical media than others.
One other point you didn’t make is that often a game is released digitally long before a physical copy gets released - Shredders Revenge for example is out now on digital, but the boxed version doesn’t land until the end of next month. I’ve also been in the position in the past where I’ve held off buying a game I like the look of because it’s a digital only release in the hope a physical version will be announced..
For me, thankfully, I’ve had a tiny number of issues in the some 23 years since I first started buying DVDs, and all my old consoles, from the PS1, Dreamcast and GameCube up to modern hardware are still in good working order - obviously that’s not to say that they’ll carry on working forever, but time will tell on that.
For me, the negatives on digital only is the reliance on needing to be able to download or access a game, album or movie at any given time - if for instance you’ve brought a digital version of a movie and removed it from whatever device you use to watch it on, who’s to say that 20 years from now you’ll still be able to re-watch what you brought?
Although, as the same argument can be pointed towards owning a physical copy of the same film, I guess it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other and down to personal preference.
@samuelvictor I hear you loud and clear on that!
Funny you should mention Jurassic Park - saw Dominion a couple of weeks back on launch weekend; it was enjoyable enough (not fantastic but better than Fallen Kingdom IMO and not worthy of the scathing reviews), but nothing can top seeing the T-Rex on the big screen for the first time as an 8 year old..
Been watching a fair bit of Dinosaurs recently as well re animatronics, and it looks fantastic to this day (as well as the comedy holding up well..)
The less said about Turtles In Time the better!
EDIT - Up until just now, I genuinely thought the third TMNT movie was subtitled Turtles In Time, when in fact it’s only the tag line (well, the tag line is ‘The Turtles Are Back…In Time’) I think the U.K. home release of the movie, and re releases in the US gave it the Turtles In Time subtitle..
@victordamazio but I’m glad to see another fan of physical media on the site! Like you said, many streaming services pull movies in and out of rotation as they please.
The only thing that irks me is when companies like Netflix or Amazon have their self produced exclusive movies, which then don’t get t released in a physical format.
I’ve also got a TON of TV boxsets, which is ever growing - been buying a lot of 60s/70s/80s/90s shows as of late (The Incredible Hulk, Baywatch, Cheers, Taxi, The Twilight Zone) and love the feel of adding to my collection..
@samuelvictor I heard about the Rogen project..will be interesting to monitor its progress.
I grew up watching the 80s TMNT show, so seeing Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang in a movie after waiting for so long (disclaimer - I absolutely love the original TMNT film and Secret of the Ooze was great fun too) felt like fan service - having a reworking of the original theme song in the end credits was fantastic too…
@victordamazio the thing with arguing that DVDs should disappear and be replaced by blu rays is that the market hasn’t entirely jumped on board - a lot of people don’t care THAT much in the jump from SD to HD to warrant buying a blu ray player or spending an extra 50% on a film (using Spiderman No Way Home as an example, where the DVD is £9.99 and the blu ray is £14.99)
Customers still get the advantages of what a disc based format brings over a VHS copy of a film - menus, extras, no need to rewind etc, and to many, they’re happy watching a DVD as the picture quality is still absolutely fine.
A lot of ‘casual’ viewers will find a cheap film on DVD in their local supermarket and take it home as a Saturday night watch with the family; I find it only tends to be people who are more into movies as a hobby would only accept blu rays.
For me, I have a mixture of both - I’m happy to buy older titles on DVD (& they’re so much cheaper it makes perfect sense to do so) and typically only get newer movies on blu ray or 4K blu ray.
@victordamazio I didn’t see the original comment you’re replying to, but I respectfully disagree..
You can’t compare solving hunger with money to a company trading on the stock exchange. The ultimate purpose of Sonic video games is to increase shareholder value.
Publicly listed companies exist for the main part to serve the shareholders who own the business - everyone who works at Sega operates as an agent for the principals of the company, and it is in their interest to do what they do for money…
I’m of the older generation here (born in ‘84), and grow up with a love of physical media that’s never left me. I’ve got some 1,100 movies or so on DVD and blu ray, and love having an actual collection I can look at and browse.
Not to mention the amount of movies that I own that aren’t part of any streaming service, or having the freedom of being able to cancel any and every streaming service and be happy with the media I own on disc at home…
@samuelvictor not seen the second movie yet - it’s on my radar, despite finding the first film average..
And you’re completely right - most ‘family’ franchises follow a very similar path - the recent TMNT movies did the same (controversial opinion though, I found Out Of The Shadows to be a lot of fun and quite a faithful representation of that big screen Saturday morning cartoon feel mentioned above)
@Quarth Glad i'm not the only one who thought this!!
To me, the whole shoehorning in a plot involving human characters unconnected to the franchise is what made the first movie so average..
It makes you think who thought putting that in was a good idea; it's a Sonic movie, and should of been like a Saturday morning cartoon instead of putting in human characters nobody cares about...
@DarkTron I know what you meant - I worded the reply incorrectly by saying 'it's funny you should mention that you were unable to get a pre order for Malzeno in, but not the other two' when I meant to say 'it's funny you should mention that you were ABLE to get a pre order for Malzeno in, but not the other two'..
My bad. Anyway - hope you've managed to pick up the rest!
@RainbowGazelle thought as much...It will be interesting the closer we get to launch to see what else Nintendo is keeping to their chest. I think we'll get a dedicated Direct which will show off what we already know plus what we don't including the new characters, and I think that's the time we'll know whether or not there will be new Amiibo to launch with the game.
@aznable I’d love offline play as well - local MP against CPU would be tons of fun. It would also extend the games life, as there would still be a way to enjoy Turf Wars etc long after the servers had been shut down (& I know this will happen way into the future, but it’s still a shame that game preservation on online games are tied to the servers which host them)
But - I daresay a lot of people only subscribe to NSO for games like Splatoon (I know I do), and if you take away the element of online play only for the majority of the game modes, it would render the service pointless as we’d be able to enjoy the game without needing to pay an extra annual fee..
@OorWullie absolutely. As much as I enjoy Splatoon, the game doesn't need to be confined to it's current genre. It's a shame that most of the Nintendo spin-off games are Mario focused..

Re: Rumour: Down Time For 'My Nintendo Store' Could Point To A Direct Next Week
@Olliemar28 massively appreciated! I’ve registered interest, but even with that I feel that I’m going to miss the email notification.
At least having a smaller window of when the pre orders go live to aim for, I’ll know to be more alert closer to the time…

Re: Random: Get A Glimpse At The Glory Days With This Retro SNES Video
@__jamiie to be fair, I think most kids in the 90s wouldn't of been too concerned as to whether or not their console boxes were in pristine condition when they got them at Christmas or whenever else - as a child I threw away all my console and game boxes, and as an adult, it mortifies me..
Re: Random: Get A Glimpse At The Glory Days With This Retro SNES Video
@samuelvictor absolutely - most the time i've seen boxes on eBay for older consoles they're slightly tatty or battered, so finding one in good condition can be difficult..
I'm not sure how protected buyers are on Etsy in relation to buying a product and it not meeting expectations, but it might be worthwhile seeing if there are any YouTube videos of people buying console boxes from Etsy sellers to get an idea of what to expect outside of the reviews given.
May well give in and start collecting some of the boxes - in hindsight, I wish i'd kept all my old console and game boxes, and manuals..
Re: Nintendo Download: 23rd June (Europe)
Got my limited edition Three Hopes on its way to me tomorrow - I've pre ordered Pocky & Rocky Reshrined but the physical edition doesn't launch for a couple of weeks yet..
Brought Persona 5 Strikers a few days back too as it's dropped to around £20 at most retailers online, so might give that a go.
Re: Random: Get A Glimpse At The Glory Days With This Retro SNES Video
@1UP_MARIO ah, the 90s...
Always get nostalgic for the 90s as it was the era I grew up in; the magic of Christmas' as a child, action figures, far less political correctness...take me back there...
Re: Random: Get A Glimpse At The Glory Days With This Retro SNES Video
@samuelvictor While I can't find the SFII Turbo bundle, there are certain sellers on Etsy who sell produced console boxes - I can't vouch for the quality as I haven't brought any, but judging by the reviews, there are a lot of happy customers...
Been wanting to get NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube console boxes for a while now for my collection...
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
@samuelvictor I heard about the Rogen project..will be interesting to monitor its progress.
I grew up watching the 80s TMNT show, so seeing Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang in a movie after waiting for so long (disclaimer - I absolutely love the original TMNT film and Secret of the Ooze was great fun too) felt like fan service - having a reworking of the original theme song in the end credits was fantastic too…
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
@jump still buying DVDs? Absolutely!
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
@sleepinglion don't give Sega ideas...!
Re: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Speeds Past $400 Million At The Global Box Office
@SteamEngenius Disgusting era?
Blockbuster, popcorn flicks have always outperformed niche titles financially.
Not sure what point you’re trying to make, as this really isn’t anything new.
Re: Feature: 10 Famous Franchises That Would Make Great Warriors Games
@YoshiF2 gameplay wise? Very similar. However, the lore added to fan favourite franchises, and the level of polish given, make these worthwhile IMO.
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity was a great side addition to BotW.
Re: Feature: 10 Famous Franchises That Would Make Great Warriors Games
@sanderev silly question, but why are you on this article then if you’ve got nothing to add apart from ‘I don’t like these games’?!
Re: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak amiibo Up For Pre-Order, Older Figures Restocked (UK)
Re: Nintendo Showcases Some Slick New Hairstyles For Splatoon 3
@RainbowGazelle thought as much...It will be interesting the closer we get to launch to see what else Nintendo is keeping to their chest.
I think we'll get a dedicated Direct which will show off what we already know plus what we don't including the new characters, and I think that's the time we'll know whether or not there will be new Amiibo to launch with the game.
Re: Nintendo Showcases Some Slick New Hairstyles For Splatoon 3
@aznable I’d love offline play as well - local MP against CPU would be tons of fun. It would also extend the games life, as there would still be a way to enjoy Turf Wars etc long after the servers had been shut down (& I know this will happen way into the future, but it’s still a shame that game preservation on online games are tied to the servers which host them)
But - I daresay a lot of people only subscribe to NSO for games like Splatoon (I know I do), and if you take away the element of online play only for the majority of the game modes, it would render the service pointless as we’d be able to enjoy the game without needing to pay an extra annual fee..
Re: Nintendo Showcases Some Slick New Hairstyles For Splatoon 3
@Crockin ultimately though, it looks a lot more like it’s a case of playing it safe, and just adding more onto what the last two games were.
The game will be as enjoyable as it always is, but would be nice if some new ideas were thrown into the mix to keep it fresh in my opinion.
And maybe that will come, as I’m sure there’s more of the game we haven’t seen yet..
Re: Nintendo Showcases Some Slick New Hairstyles For Splatoon 3
@OorWullie absolutely. As much as I enjoy Splatoon, the game doesn't need to be confined to it's current genre.
It's a shame that most of the Nintendo spin-off games are Mario focused..
