Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - August 2020

@zool
I agree with the principle, but I don't agree with the example of short hike, and I'll explain why.

Going into the game I was skeptical, I typically do not like the chill indy games we see nowadays, but I managed to get it for like 14 cents because of gold points and the discount so I figured I had nothing to lose. My first play-through where I rushed to the mountain did only take me about 90 mins, however I knew I wanted a second go around where I collected just about everything because of how much I fell in love with the game. This second run (which I did entirely with my little brother watching, making for some great bonding time) took me a number of hours (and I didn't even 100% it, because I can never make myself 100% a game).

Not only that, the few hours of short hike I did play were some of the most densely enjoyable (if that makes any sense) of any game I have had the pleasure of playing. Most of these games that have extremely long playtime do so via grinding and empty time, and A Short Hike has absolutely none of that. It is a sort of quality over quantity situation. Overall, I believe I got somewhere in the ballpark of 4-5 hours out of this game already, with much to come for sure. That makes the price-per-hour make a bit more sense.

If someone only played A Short Hike for 90 mins, it means they really didn't like the game very much (or were in a rush), which is fine, but I don't think really is a good representation of what this game has to offer. If you are looking for a time sink of a game then I would not recommend A Short Hike, but otherwise (cost and playtime included) I would have to recommend it. One of the most refreshing things I have playing in a long time.

Wow, this is a really an actually really good update. Really targeted the more over-centralizing weapons, really the only things more I could ask for is a splattershot pro nerf and maybe and armor nerf, otherwise good stuff all around.

@Silly_G @Kalmaro
From what I know what is considered a curse is very much a cultural thing. Where I was raised (in the so called "Bible Belt" if you must know) language was very mild, and things that most people would not consider curses feel like curses to me (e.g. screwed up).

Does that mean that I should force what seems like a curse to me upon others? Not at all. I know people from other parts of the US who use language that I would very much consider "cursing" on a regular basis. The words simply mean something different to them than they do to me.

I have never been to Australia, but I could completely understand if the word in question is not at all a curse there, and that's totally fine. However, for me and where I learned what words to and not to use, the word in question very much is a curse. It doesn't offend me if others use and I don't think others should be berated or articles be taken down because of it, I am just personally not going to use said word.

TL; DR
It is subjective and is almost completely based on the culture in which you learned your heart language.

Part of the reason I want a new game is because the switch is just so much more comfortable to play on, and also I do want a HD Pokémon. Additionally, I have yet to see a good reason for the Pokémon reduction. Now please correct me if I am wrong, but from my admittedly light reading it seems that the whole “model and animation improvement” is a load of malarkey because of the almost (if not completely) recycled animations from the 3ds games. I fully support recycling game assets, but you cannot have it both ways. It really feels kinda scummy to me, but once again I may be missing a perfectly good reason for the cut. Also, I am fully willing to admit that I am sorta salty about this whole situation. I feel a bit led on by the Pokémon Company. I was quite exited about Pokémon for switch, then let’s go happened and I was a bit bummed. Let’s go was probably great, it just did not appeal to me in the least as I have zero gen 1 nostalgia. Then it was announced that a main series Pokémon game was coming in 2019 and I was exited again and fully willing to wait, and it was announced and looked great! Then this whole thing happened. I do not understand why they could not have all of them and take another year or something. (Once again, someone please tell me if I am missing a perfectly good reason, because I very well may be!)

I’m relatively new to Pokémon (having only started playing in ORAS), but I have thoroughly enjoyed both those games and Pokémon Moon. After the announcement of S&S I was really exited to be able to bring my favorite Pokémon to my switch and play there. I have a few shiny Pokémon including a 5 IV shiny decidueye that I spent a few weeks breeding for. Decidueye is my favorite Pokémon and the shiny is probably my favorite shiny. My second favorite Pokémon is probably Mega Sableye, so I was really exited to have both of those in HD. When the Let’s Go games were announced I was kinda bummed that I would not be able to bring my favorite pokemon, that I spent time getting, to them, and I skipped the game because of that. Now with Sword and Shield I am moderately frustrated that, once again, I am not going to be able to bring in my favorite Pokémon and am skipping them for that reason. I play Pokémon mostly for the variety and excitement of having all these options, and honestly probably would have been fine with few to no new Pokémon if I had the chance to keep my old ones. Because of this, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the games very much at all if I were to leave behind my favorite mons that I spent so much time obtaining. That being said, I fully understand and support anyone who, like @Anti-Matter and many others, are happy with how the games are looking and are buying them day one.

(Side note: I really liked mega evolutions and cannot understand why they got rid of them from the single player. Banning them from online play I can kinda understand, but not even being able to access them offline? That seems like a step backwards to me almost as much as cutting out so many Pokémon does!)

Sorry for making all y’all bear through my rambling XD

I gave it the best chance I could, but was ultimately disappointed. The combat on the ground is actually quite good, but the problem is that flying is basically required for most missions. Flying feels sluggish, and not at all like the effortless feeling of skating you get while fighting on the ground.

Idk if in the full game there will be better upgrades to have flying feel faster, but as of right now fighting in the air is really no fun. Thus, my suggestion would be to make flying feel more usable, just the ability to have an incredibly quick mid air dash would go a long way. Because right now even the boost feels like swimming through molassis.

TL;DR
The ground fighting feels good, but the air combat feels like a bad water level imo.
