From one perspective Nintendo's Switch is slowly striking the N64 classics off its hit list - in the nicest possible way. Over the past year the likes of Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time have passed the torch to the likes of Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Breath of the Wild respectively.
With Aqua Moto Racing Utopia splashing down onto the eShop (with a seemingly limited retail edition, too), should we dare to hope that Wave Race 64 is next to fall?
No, we shouldn't. Sorry to be blunt, but we need to dispel that inevitable comparison straight away. It's deeply unhelpful to what is a solid, inoffensive but rather mediocre aquatic racer.
Aqua Moto Racing Utopia has its roots in smartphone gaming, but it does have some Nintendo pedigree. Back in 2013 Zordix launched Aqua Moto Racing 3D onto the 3DS eShop. What you're getting here is an essentially similar experience, but with vastly improved graphics and technical performance.
You and a bunch of AI opponents bomb around a variety of watery environments on your jet-skis, nipping through mangroves, ducking under bridges and scraping past oil tankers.
Each open environment contains a loosely structured course for you to follow, as delineated by coloured buoys. Red buoys must be passed to the right, while yellow buoys need to be passed to the left. Passing closer to those buoys does more than maximise your racing line - it also fills your boost gauge faster. Once this gauge is full you can launch yourself forward at an accelerated rate for a few seconds.
Another way to fill that boost gauge is to perform stunts off the many ramps that are littered across each course. You can spin or flip your jet-ski by holding ZL and the left stick, perform a number of poses by holding the right stick in a direction, or combine the two. Fail to land your jet-ski straight, though, and you're set for a messy fall and a time-sapping restart.
There are a lot of messy falls in Aqua Moto Racing Utopia, and that's largely down to the game's brutal water physics.
On the positive side, it makes every lap genuinely unpredictable. What were smooth waters on the first lap could be roiling swells by the end, often thanks to the wakes of your opponents. Memorising the courses only gets you so far here, as you need to be able to feel out the waters and predict what they're going to do to you.
One open sea course sets you racing towards a brutally hemmed-in hairpin turn. If you just motor on into the turn you'll probably leap off one of the huge waves straight into the side of a hulking boat. Feather the throttle, dip your nose down into the bigger waves and hold ZL to make a tight turn, however, and you have a chance of making it through.
Water has a pronounced effect, then, but it's often overly exaggerated and lacking in that organic flow that the best aquatic racers (like Wave Race) have. Combined with the harsh penalty for any kind of direct collision with your competitors or the level furniture, 'unpredictable' can quickly become a negative trait.
Similarly clumsy are the graphics. Everything's somewhat gaudy and cheap looking, and Aqua Moto Racing Utopia just can't shake off that feeling of an eight-year-old smartphone game despite its sharpened edges. The water, meanwhile, has a slightly uncanny look and feel to it, and it often feels like it's made of a jelly-like substance rather than liquid.
Aside from straight races you'll also encounter stunt-focused rounds, and these tend to show off the clunkiness of the game's physics systems as you struggle and jostle to line yourself up for a clean jump.
Local multiplayer fans are well catered for, with splitscreen competition for up to four players. It runs quite nicely even in handheld mode, where the basic graphics aid legibility on the Switch's small screen.
There's no provision to tackle the campaign mode in multiplayer, unfortunately, but there are four party games to keep you all entertained: Aqua Moto Hockey, Keep the Flag, King of the Hill and Duckling Mama. The latter resembles an aquatic Mario Kart battle mode (if you squint), with a colour coded arena and a cute duck-stealing mechanic. None of it's outstanding, but there's definitely entertainment to be had given the chaotic nature of the racing.
Conclusion
Aqua Moto Racing Utopia initially appeals for being a rare water-based racer. Scooting around on your jet-ski often feels more like riding a bucking bronco than driving a vehicle, and that makes it stand out from regular landlocked racers.
However, it's lacking several layers of finesse and balance, the presentation is deeply unappealing, and those aggressive water physics are a mixed blessing. We're just going to have to wait patiently for Nintendo to return to the Wave Race universe, aren't we?

A new Wave Race next Spring/Summer would be bonkers...
Wave Race 64 this is not.
I played the previous entries on 3DS. Very, very bad, but worth some laughs with download play. Seeing as this has no download play and is MUCH more expensive than the 3DS games... it's a big 'No' from me.
I'm gonna hold out for "Riptide GP: Renegade" coming next week.
"The water, meanwhile, has a slightly uncanny look and feel to it, and it often feels like it's made of a jelly-like substance rather than liquid"
I hope that Miiverse dude avoids this game, then.
I would crap my pants for a new Wave Race 💩
Forget this game.
Riptide GP Renegade is where it's at...

@Moon "download play". Switch needs.
@GC-161 lol
I never thought this would hold a candle to Wave Race but, I thought it might be better than it is. Maybe a 7. Oh well. Between Kart and FAST RMX I think my racing itch is scratched until something truly compelling comes along.
Shame, because it certainly looks pretty cool. But, with a game like this, the driving experience really is everything. If you don't nail that then the rest is kinda meaningless.
Having played the 3ds iteration this review comes as no great surprise, will still buy in a sale though just to scratch an itch.
@JRJalapeno That plus 1080 snowboarding would complete my Switch. Both of these games had the control “feel” absolutely perfect.
@Shiryu @JaxonH I noticed that earlier, I thought it looked alright from the trailer but then stupidly dismissed it when I saw the file size is only around 150mb. I assumed there can't be much to it but it turns out I was very wrong. According to some reviews I just read of the PS4 version which has 71% on Metacritic, there is an "overwhelming amount of content and a variety of game modes to play through". With another review saying this of it
"Vector Unit has made yet another outstanding aquatic racer and anyone who enjoyed Wave Race or the Hydro Thunder franchise should give it a shot. It’s thrilling, controls like a dream and looks excellent."
and it has online multiplayer to boot. That's one to look forward to for sure. How the developers have managed to get a 3D racer with tons of content, game modes and online multiplayer into a file size of 150mb I'll never know. Impressive stuff.
I was curious to play, although the game isn’t broken, I do very much so understand when you say the jet ski feels more like an animal bucking you off than it does an actual water vehicle. I’d strongly suggest anyone interested to not even throw money towards this game unless it’s under 5 bones.
£35 they want for this and another £35 for the snowmobile game. They're having a laugh!
I absolutely LOVED Wave Race Blue Storm. So much fun and challenge - and a genuine pleasure to play. I put a ton of hours into it but still didn't complete the Venice course in 1st.
Can't get me a Switch yet but if Nintendo make a new Wave Rave then I'd be SUUUUPER tempted - would be SO good in hand held - even better with a LAN pal to face off against.
Summer 2018? Go on Nintendo - try my wallet!
[Sarcasm Mode Engaged]
Nintendolife are so biased, giving bad games low scores all the time.
@JaxonH I second that wholeheartedly.
@Korokke Man, you have great taste in games. Two of my all time favorites. Still play them every now and then, both on the N64 and the GameCube.
@OorWullie I would agree that from a technical standpoint, it is quite the achievement, but game-wise, this doesn't even come close to being in Wave Race's shadow, let alone be a decent replacement for those missing that wonderful game, yours truly included.
I'd argue that this is even worse than the original version of Hydro Thunder, although that is somewhat more of an over the top arcade game than both Wave Race and this game here. Speaking of Hydro Thunder, the modern reboot on last gen consoles was actually quite good as well.
But: good as it was, it's still no Wave Race...
What a shame - i love this stuff! Wave Race & F-zero where are you??
I had hopes that this game would be alright, for the price it's not worth it.
Why, in God's name, Nintendo doesn't give us another Wave Race, 1080 and F-Zero is beyond me. Would buy these in a heart beat.
@tourjeff I feel those three games are coming, I can feel it in my bones. I guess Ninty wants a larger install base before releasing those beauts, in doing so adding diversity to their game lineup without them necessarily being system sellers. They must have F-Zero in the works otherwise why bother with the MK8 F-Zero DLC. And Waverace has been mentioned by an employee (can’t remember who said it and in what context). The one I doubt is 1080. My favourite series, brief but awesome. Let’s also not forget ExciteBike or another Excite title...
@Shiryu I really hope that Riptide GP plays a good Hydro Thunder! I need insane jumps in my life! (I miss San Francisco Rush )
@GrailUK My friends who picked up the game on PS4 keep telling me it's awesome. We will see...
the cheek to sell this and the snow-mobile game at their respective prices!
vector unit's Riptide is out soon and looks a lot better. vector unit may develop for mobile but their games are unusually polished and playable for mobile titles
That's exactly what I expected from a cheaply produced mobile game. Just look at those ugly character models that look like they're from the 90's!
The Switch is attracting too many amateur devs/publishers or those that simply want to rip off gamers (35€ LOL!) with cheaply made rubbish. And it's all because they think it's a mobile console (because smartphones and tablets are full of this kind of games).
I wish the eshop was curated...
Come on Nintendo, let’s get a New Wave Race.
@beazlen1 hope you are right!
Would be also nice to have another Pilotwings
Sounds like we need a Wave Race, Nintendo.
@Shiryu That's just because of peer pressure and reviews that told them so. They never really played an actually good jet ski game on any model Playstation before, what do they know?
Once you've played Wave Race, you can't go back to lesser experiences, regardless of what system they're on.
Here's hoping Nintendo is taking notice, although I have a sinking feeling that they probably won't.
Gee what a surprise...
But how does it run? 30fps? 60fps? Is the frame rate stable or are there lots of drops?
I've seen some streams that appear rather smooth and another that was awfully jerky. Might have been the streamer's setup but I can't tell as there is little to no info out on this game.
I really want a new Wave Race game.
@TJM Yeah La Razza Canal circuit is way too cruel. The GameCube game has awesome visuals, physics and weather effects, plus perfect performance. It feels real.
The term Jet-ski is actually wrong. What you should be saying is a PWC or Personal Watercraft, or even just watercraft like the game does. Jet-ski is like a Jacuzzi, except instead of being a hot tub, a Jet-Ski is a PWC made by Kawasaki, much like how Wave Runners are Yamaha's version. As for the aggressive water physics, have you ever driven a stand-up? They are a work out in themselves and trying to do even the simplest of stunts can be a hassle on flat water, let alone rough water. Plus the sea can be unpredictable, so there's nothing wrong with the water in this game as it is behaving exactly like is should. That is all.
Please Nintendo...make a new Wave Race for the Switch.
This is why we need Wave Race.
Biggest issue here Is the price - this and the snow one are at least 3 times the price they should be
oddly enough this game also received a wii u release in april...
@gatorboi352 I downloaded the Wii U version. And considering it was cheap, I actually think it's a decent game.
