How Are You Finding Switch Game And App Compatibility On The Switch 2?

The only two games I care about are South Park The Fractured But Whole (own but can’t play, also own on PS) and Nier Automata (don’t own yet, but own on PS and XBox).

Other than that, all my games work and I’m very satisfied with how the S2 has handled my library.

Shame about Nier, glad I kept my OLED just in case.

Should get fixed at some point though, heard Nier Replicant 1.2 was coming to Switch 2 and that should bring with it support for Automata on Switch 2 if Nintendo hasn’t ironed it out themselves first.

My games all work, but the resolution and frame rate caps on most of my games leads me to pick up my Steam Deck more often than I thought I would after getting a Switch 2.

They really need to get nier automata fixed. I mean what is the holdup? Anyone know of any other highly popular games that don't work well on switch 2?

I noticed today that Arkham knight just got a new update but it's not a full on upgrade. Just fixes the framerate and a crashing issue. We need more full switch 2 upgrades.

Every game i have tried has worked, also some of the load times are amazing better. Looking at you random wolf mother driving a motorcycle metroidvania.

Every switch 1 game I’ve tried runs, but they aren’t pretty. I’m very disappointed that most switch 1 games run at 720p upscaled to the 1080p screen in handheld mode on switch 2. They look bad, enough that I never want to play them. It’s the DS on 3DS all over again, except this time there is no pixel perfect mode. It’s maddening to me, especially since there is a super simple solution: forcing them to run in “docked mode” would scale the output to 1080p in most cases.

Overall, it's pretty amazing. I do hope they fix the kinks for software like YouTube, Nier Automata, and as many other affected games as possible eventually.

I'm currently playing DK Bananza on my Switch 2 b/c I'm weird and like playing next gen games on my new $450 consoles. I also played some MKW but after beating all the 50cc races I went back to Disney Speedstorm on PS5 b/c I like the controls better. It is on Switch 2 though.

I'm also playing SMG 2 on my Wii U b/c I don't double dip. SMG still held up but I'm yelling and cursing more at SMG 2 than enjoying it. It really is just challenge mode dlc. I'm 50 stars in, 5 more, if I can, then I'm out.

Then I'm playing HW 2, ahead of HW 3, which is a Switch game on Switch 2, so it's working for me.

I'm trying to wait for a significant sale on sd-ex cards before migrating my Switch library to Switch 2. Even then, I'm content to keep most of my games on cheaper storage unless they saw a significant improvement on S2.

On all the 135 games I have on Switch, only one still have compatibility issues and it's NieR Automata, to the surprise of absolutely nobody...

They really need to fix the resolution so that switch 1 games can make use of the switch 2 screen, it shouldn’t be hard considering a lot of these games run at 1080p docked.

It’s a shame that a lot of games have performance boosts due to switch 2 hardware but look a blurry mess with 720p stretched to its screen.

I'd like to see Jurassic World Evolution: Complete Edition get fixed. I own it on Playstation, but would consider getting it on Switch 2 if it wasn't broken.

from personal experience with my games...Hit-or-miss for me at times, some games feel so much better on switch 2 (like Dragon quest builders 2 or fantasian) even without patches wheres other games either look worse/blurrier (such as the octopath games) or. while compatible have issues (mentioned in the other topic the issues with certain cutscenes not playing in trails from zero/to azure)

The fact that firmware updates seem to be slowly improving it is nice though, hopefully its something which continues to be improved on over time.

Yeah it would be nice if there was some optional way to have the games run as if they were docked while handheld (i say optional due to things like touchscreen stuff)

but yeah, as it is its promising with some rough edges which will hopefully be smoothed over time (and does make those firmware updates even more exciting, BC improvements alongside some of that stability)

Still wild that a game as high profile as Automata is unsupported… guess I shouldn’t expect much from Squeenix

I actually went on eBay and picked up a cheapish OLED because I was so annoyed by the resolution on some games. Others seem to fair much better and I wouldn’t notice if I didn’t already know. I suppose it will be handy to have a secondary switch which is much more portable!

I haven't had a single issue yet, and I've already played through around a dozen games.

That said... I'm glad I happened to play through and finish NieR Automata early this year before the Switch 2 released. Really hoping that one gets its issues squared away.

I've been holding off on getting NieR for if they ever fix its compatibility but other than that I've not really been having many issues and most everything I care about works at least for the most part.

The only issue I've really run into at all is that one time when replaying the first Danganronpa it locked up and then crashed while trying to boot, but that seems like a freak thing given it's not an issue I've otherwise seen reported and the rest of that playthrough ran better than the game does on the Switch 1.

Most everything I have works as well or better than the original. I kept my OLED because I still use Ring Fit on the daily and there are a couple of games that need fixes still.
I haven't noticed any upscaling problems and if I do, I've got the original to fall back on. I've been pleasantly surprised how good the NSO titles look. I've played a lot of them over the last few weeks and they look great.

The only game I own that isn't Switch 2 compatible is Star Wars Republic Commando by Aspyr. There was a patch (1.05) about a month ago. I can't find any official information on this patch, and Nintendo's site still says "Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found." I saw one message on a Reddit thread suggesting it may be fixed. Issue discussed was a camera locked fully up or fully down, that apparently also happened on Switch 1 but rarely.

There are other games I'm interested in still marked as not compatible as well. Chrono Cross, NieR: Automata, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat.

All games I tried worked perfectly, however they look worse in both docked and portable modes. I guess it was better to output lower res to the TV and then let it upscale…

My enhancement wish is for Nintendo to automatically apply AI upscaling for Switch 1 games. That would do wonders to the visuals of most games.

Oh my gosh I know this is the internet but why are people impossible to please??? Most nintendo games got free upgrades but nobody is talking about that ppl just want to talk about the few that weren't free. Also nier is one of the few exceptions to a game being unsupported on switch 2 and you're better off playing that on pc anyway.

I just wish we’d get more updated games.

I played Moonscars on S2 as it ran poorly on the Switch.
It was a massive improvement.

Victor Vran runs worse on S2 than the Switch at the moment. It has frame drops in single player and can stutter hard on local multiplayer. Kinda bummed

I’m very dissatisfied. And it’s not Nintendo’s fault. I can’t understand why third party games released 2-3 months before the switch 2 did not receive any switch 2 updates yet. I wouldn’t mind paying $9.99 per game. But no option is bad. There are very important AAA games out there that run crazy bad on switch

Haven't had any major problems so far. The only thing is the blur in handheld mode for some games, but I played docked 90% of the time, if not more anyway.

It would be nice if they added more support for games, though.

When it was announced that the NSW2 would support NSW1 games, they made it seem like it was a seamless thing, as though all NSW1 games were going to work perfectly on the NSW2 immediately...at least that's how I understood it. But in reality, here we are...waiting for patches and confirmation from Nintendo/Game Devs one game at a time. This is another reason why I haven't and not in a rush to buy a NSW2.

I suppose "mostly satisfied" is fairest to answer until everything is supported, but in reality, only using backward compatibility to cram in more stuff I was previously driven to shelve on Switch, I'm predictably almost out of storage with a handful of mammoths that already run fine (primarily Pillars of Eternity, Immortals, Kingdoms of Amalur and Outer Worlds). After wrapping up The House of the Dead (which I was sufficiently eager for to put on the nextgen out the gate), I have a good 10 Gb free and have considered revisiting multiple options within that space, but... it gets annoying to have to uninstall/reinstall this stuff later merely due to Cyberpunk and upgraded NMS's proportionally bloated update patches (plus each Gamecube update chipping away at the remaining storage). @wert303b the compatibility itself is covered for the safely estimated majority of titles, and "upgrade" patches rarely upgrade anything meaningful.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity doesn’t look great at all on the Switch 2 screen, and there’s no improvements to resolution/frame-rate and (most odd to me) the loading times are exactly the same. I’m not that bothered I suppose, but I did expect some improvements.

@wert303b I mean day one they said that not all games would be backwards compatible and put up a site listing all known games with issues, they never really acted like this was going to be seamless.

I’m playing Tokyo Xanadu XE (physical version) right now on my Switch 2 and whilst they say it’s not supported and apparently it’s not available to download on the Switch 2 eShop, I haven’t encountered any problems or bugs at all. In fact, it plays really, really well.

Couldn’t agree more. Also hindering future purchases of some games as well. I really wanted to see this more often.

Waiting for Nier to work properly (and hopefully get an upgrade), and for Switch 2 upgrades on Astral Chain, Witcher 3 and Bayonetta 3.
And even thought I'm not planning to replay them anytime soon, also the Xenoblades would benefit A LOT from this upgrade.

Other than all that, I'm very happy with the backwards compatibility.

This mess was what stopped me from getting a switch 2. I may get one in the future but I’m in no rush.

I have been playing mostly MKW and donkey kong bananza but the one time i tried to play borderlands 3 it was quite a nightmare

For me it’s really good overall with a couple of odd exceptions like Nier. That’s a big game from a big publisher and surprised it’s not updated to be supported.

@Lizuka thanks for mentioning that...I'm ashamed to admit, I wasn't paying close attention to all the information on the NSW2 leading up and when it was officially launched...got caught up with life to track it closely...but, from the limited information that I had then, my initial impression was that it was going to be seamless. I think I heard that games would be backward compatible and I didn't dig further...I still eventually found out that I was wrong.

Generally they did a good job, but for whatever reason Switch 1 games don't look nice to me on Switch 2. I find myself holding out for dedicated Switch 2 patches that enable 4K resolution.

Switch 2 needs more Nier Automata

I'm happy that a lot of games run better on Switch 2 than Switch 1.

But I'm disappointed with the games that have bugs unique to Switch 2 and with how Nintendo is handling that.

1. Nintendo does not publicly acknowledge games that are known to have issues on Switch 2. For example, several members on this site have documented how prerendered videos in the Crossbell duology (Trails series) don't play.

I've also personally noticed some minor graphical issues in a handful of games. For example, upside down textures on certain elements in Guilty Gear Strive and Enter the Gungeon. Or graphical artifacts when using the CRT filter in Super Hydorah. And this is in just the handful of Switch 1 games I've played on Switch 2 since launch. I'm sure there's more if you look for them. Which leads me to...

2. There's no official way for players to report bugs. Obviously it's gonna be difficult for Nintendo's QA to find all the issues with so many games to test. So why not rely on the passionate community to help you identity issues?

3. When they do acknowledge an issue, most of the time, the description on their site is incredibly vague, like just "progression issue," sometimes causing people to even question if there's an issue at all just cause they haven't personally encountered it.

4. There isn't a master list of every game with issues. For people with large collections, this would be easier to check than to type in each game one at a time. It also makes it difficult to know the full scope of games with issues. For example, someone mentioned in the comments on this article that Tales of Symphonia has issues. Looks like that was discovered on Nov. 4, but you'd never know to just randomly check an individual game's eShop page to see if there's been a new issue discovered. It would be easier if we could just get a list of games with issues and sort by date discovered.

Though to handle this last point, I'm working on my own app to scrub this info from Nintendo's website and display it in a table.

As for specific games, beyond the ones I mentioned earlier, I'm also still waiting for fixes for:
*Strania
*Raiden III
*Raiden IV
*Nier
*Chrono Cross

I'm sure there's more, but I'll get back with you after I've finish my app.

I didn't know that Nier was unsupported

I was considering getting into Tales of games recently and was dissapointed to find that Tales of Symphonia was unsupported as well.

Not having 1080p on the handheld screen for all games seems like such a missed opportunity. 2D games like Broken Sword, Night in the Woods and Mutazione upscale beautifully, but 3D games and in-game text often look pretty rough (Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. Ultimate).

The only game I've had issues with is Alien: Isolation - ocassionally the sound glitches or cuts out all together

@tonyp1987 Oh, that sucks! Thankfully I held onto my OLED Switch for my bedroom. I have Symphonia on PS so that one isn’t a personal worry but it’s bad for those who have it for Switch only!

Many S1 games are slightly or significantly improved actually (performance for example)

I'm greedy because I want more Switch 2 upgrades from both Nintendo and third-parties but at least most games I want to play work.

@Dm9982 where did you hear about Nier Replicant? Been hoping for that for a while (actually prefer the first Nier) but I can't see anything online. It would make sense though.

@Warioware It was a rumor going around earlier this year. Think I saw it on a reddit forum. Nier Auto sold really well on S1 and SE loves to support Nintendo when possible. So even as a rumor it made sense, but there’s nothing concrete on it yet.

It may have been a data leak or something…. Wish I had the source or can even remember where I saw it.

The only other thing I remember around that time was Octopath Zero wasn’t announced yet and I don’t think the FF1-6 Remasters were announced for S1 at the time, so I believe it was in a data chunk regarding those

I don't have a Switch 2 yet, but this is one thing of note that I need to keep in mind. My grand plan is to give my Switch 1 to my mom but I need to make sure that all of the remaining games that I still wanted to play are compatible on Switch 2.

In other words, they no longer want to display a flat list of incompatible titles. This might not be good news for those hoping for some more compatibility fixes.

Nier definitely needs to be updated and please Nintendo, get in touch with ID Software and ask them to update Doom and Doom Eternal for Switch 2. I would pay cash money for graphical upgrades on both games.

@the_beaver you can hack your save file for the Witcher to make it run at a higher framerate. I recall hearing it's just the PC settings file turned into a switch save. I'll leave you to look that up

The only game I've found so far that has issues is A Hat in Time. As of right now, it's completely unplayable for me. It crashes whenever I try to load a level.

Enclave HD still has terrible audio buffer leak problems.

@RenanKJ you really think switch 2 outputs switch 1 games worse quality while docked? I hadn’t really noticed myself… AI upscaling would be something I could get behind.

@mackers84 It does. The games perform better but look worse because it outputs 1080p at most in a 4k signal. Even the splash screen when you boot a game looks blurry now compared to playing Switch 1 docked.
