Pokémon Sleep Is Now Available In Even More Regions On iOS And Android

After launching on open beta earlier this week, The Pokémon Company has now expanded the release of Pokémon Sleep even further, with the app now available to download on iOS and Android in much of Europe, Africa and the Middle East (thanks, Serebii.net).

We went hands-on with the new sleep companion app in its early stages last week, though we remain somewhat confused by what the product is all about. Tracking your sleep is one thing, but the need for microtransactions in such an app feels a bit off.

News of the expansion was shared on Serebii.net, which noted that the Pokémon Sleep is set to launch in Japan tomorrow.

At the time of writing, it appears that the app is still unavailable for most of North America, though we understand that it is downloadable in Canada. At the rate that it is launching, however, we would imagine that it won't be too long before we can all learn how to sleep — finally...

Can't seem to find it in the UK, and I really wanted to see if it thinks 4/5 hours sleep a night is okay,

Just idly checked, and it even shows up on Play here in Belarus - which is more than the sheer majority of Pokemon and Nintendo mobile titles can say for themselves.

...okay, I'm seemingly being unfair to Pokemon here (checking the publisher lineup reveals Unite, Home, Cafe and whatnot - even Shuffle Mobile is still around), but my bellyache point still stands about Nintendo with only SMR and MKT to their name here (and there used to be Miitomo once). Not even AC Pocket Camp the publisher page wears the themed banner from!😆

I was able to load it on my UK Android device yesterday, and did the tutorial sleep session.
It expects you to get 8.5 hours of sleep per night.

How the game works is you have a 7 day streak of raising a Snorlax, and you can earn up to 100 sleep points in a sleep session. The goal is to get the Snorlax as powerful as possible by sleeping well at night, and feeding it during the day with three meals during scheduled time periods.
The minimum sleep duration accepted is 1.5 hours, and you earn sleep points proportionate to hours slept.

Players of Magikarp Jump will be familiar with the mechanics, it's an idle game that incorporates meaningful sleep data.
Where the idle game aspect comes in is that daily you have progression in terms of Pokémon encountered and befriended, and you set up a team of Pokémon to help out by gathering berries for snacks, and ingredients for cooking meals. You have a maximum capcity for Pokémon and ingredients, that can be upgraded using the diamonds earned during play.

It's very much a long-haul game, and like Magikarp Jump, paying for benefits will expediate the process so you can get results sooner, but it should be structured in a way that 100% of the content is accessible without paying. That's how I played Magikarp Jump.

So what if you erm... share a bed with another human? guessing the results wouldn't be accurate then?

The sleep data didn't seem particularly complex.
It appears to measure two things; movement and noise.
Based on these levels, it determines if you were dozing, snoozing, or slumbering.

It can't properly account for if you actually wake up fully, such as if you get up to use the bathroom, it'll just register that as dozing.

Goodness, I'm lucky to get 3-4 hours of sleep a night.

Is that what we are meant to do as a species?

In some cultures, it's normal to have two sleep sessions a day.
Siestas are taken during the hottest parts of the day in some countries close to the equator, and can make up the 8 or so hours of sleep we need each day.

Pokémon Sleep accounts for this and lets you record two sleep sessions a day.

@RupeeClock It might take me a while to complete this game, but I love grinding. I got to generation 495 for magikarp jump, the slow rate of free diamonds meant I didn't get a few things but got all the patterns so left it there. I'll give it a try when it comes up for IOS

However long players keep playing, the company will do well.
The sleep data they collect will be useful to them somehow, even from 100% free players.

I can see it on my iPod App store, but must has 14.0 iOS or later so can't install it.
Will check the play store on my Samsung tonight and maybe give this a go.

The key challenge of the project has to be player retention, and idle games are superb at achieving that.

Longer retention means longer data collection.

@Haruki_NLI sleeping too little, I think it’s under 5 hours a day, can bring severe health problems in the long run. It can also affect your mood and other aspects of your life.

The same goes for sleeping too much though.

The sweet spot seems to be 6-8 hours.

@Eel Not at all. Like with every thing else, us hairless apes differ from one another by a crazy amount. 5 hours may be just fine for one ape while another is still groggy after 8.
