Atlus Listening To Etrian Odyssey Fan Feedback For Future Entries

Waiting for my copy to ship. Hope EO6 isnt TOO far off.

I've got two Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS. If you don't have that system and you like dungeon crawlers, I'd definitely recommend them. That said, the 3DS seemed like such the perfect platform for these games, it almost seems wrong to play them on Switch. Oh yeah, and they take me FOREVER to beat. I've still got one more to go on 3DS, so I'm going to have to pass on these.

I hope Atlus brings more games to the switch. Hoping for a persona 1 and 2 collection.

Feedback: please do not charge $120AUD for a collection of old games.

Aside from the steamy price I really have no issues with it, I got the games on the big screen and there's finally actual real automapping, though it's still a minor nuisance that you do still need to place the doors and the gathering points and whatever so maybe that could be improved upon.

It worked out here cus I do prefer the original visions of the Etrian Odyssey games over the remasters on the 3DS, but if at any point they're gonna release stuff like Strange Joyrney on newer systems and they do plan on incorporating the 3DS version "improvements" then I'd love to see the option to choose between the vanilla and the remastered version. I wouldn't like it but I could at least deal with the Untold versions of the Etrian Odyssey games but Strange Journey Redux was just too much, I hated it.

Oh yeah and Dark Spire, I still remember your best game Atlus. Maybe port that one too, for me, please?

To me, Etrian Odyssey is THE penultimate dungeon crawler experience. To me, the only thing even close to it is Soul Hackers.

@DrLockdown : The price is easier to swallow for a physical release (the Asian release supports English, while the Japanese doesn't), but AU$120 for a download exclusive of this nature is borderline obscene, and I say the same of the similarly outrageously overpriced Famicom Detective Club (which is AU$90).

I'll just get the games in the collection individually, that or wait until the collection gets a discounted price. I wanna support the series as well, but the price is ridiculous.

@Sisilly_G Yeah and even the Asian release comes with its own import costs. Postage down under would be prohibitively expensive.

@ComfyAko Only the Untold remakes had specific main characters and even then only in the story mode. These are the originals. You can make your entire party whatever you like.

@Karula Yeah I forgot to mention that I have the Untold remakes. Wait so the original way to play is the one where you make the entire party yourself? Thank you for that info! I didn't know, I'm new to the series

@ComfyAko There are some things that carry over or unlock from completing the game in story mode in the Untold version (characters, weapons and the story specific classes, if I recall correctly), but you can just skip it and play classic mode instead if you prefer.

@Karula I think I'll stick to the classic mode for now, I want to experience the "original" way of playing first, I just didn't know that the classic was first, I thought the story was the most "default".

@DrLockdown : Play-Asia offers free economy shipping for orders over US$99 (AU$158.14 at time of writing) before tax, so it's not too bad if you intend to pick up an extra item or two.

I am a newbie to these series. I have V on my 3DS, but haven’t gone in yet. I decided to buy 3 remastered on Switch, as I thought it would be a better starting point, as I heard V has some pretty intricate stuff.

I have been enjoying my time with it so far. I use a stylus on my Switch, though I can see how the stylus on a 3DS would be better. I think they did the best job they could with the mapping on the Switch. The only thing I would like with mapping is the ability to use ZR or ZL (for lefties) to quickly swap between drawing lines and painting the floor.

I would also like a bit more of an instruction manual as there are some things in the game I didn’t understand. For example, the icons used for enemy weak points.

I also think that at the price they are selling it, they should include ALL DLC. It would have been nice to include the option to play the Untold versions of the game.

In the future, if they do this again and charge a premium price, they should do a bit extra beyond just QOL improvements. Im not sure how this release appeals to those who already played them on the original hardware. Te extra could be a story mode, or a new area with new dungeons, something like that.

Yeah there's enough games on 3ds to have a whole new remaster trilogy (IV, V and nexus)

I do find the price point definitely stings but i am happy that these games are available for a whole new audience.

@Dijita The Untold versions weren't DLC, but completely remade versions of the first two games. Aside from the added "story mode" with pre-set parties & characters, they also totally redid all the labyrinth layouts, and made other changes to gameplay as well.

But mostly wanted to say that V is my personal favorite of all the games, I loved the classes & felt like the labyrinth puzzle designs were the best of the series, so hope you still decide to give that one a try at some point! 😁

The Untold content HD Switch releases should have happened with the classical trilogy release. Strange that the definitive content games exist on a previous gen. console!

Besides that there is little wrong with the premier gameplay quality dungeon crawler.

I think they should just go for VI on Switch now. Forget releasing the HD versions of the 3DS games.

I'm not sure what they want to know, but I really enjoyed the first five games, particularly the 5th. Nexus wasn't so good.

The Untold games were enjoyable enough, but they weren't as good as the originals. I felt the post-game was unbalanced, as the little tricks and strategies were no longer sufficient for the super bosses. Most of all I disliked the Grimoires, which felt necessary, but were too tedious and random to obtain.

If they made a proper 6th game I would like them to just carry on from what V was like.

I like all sorts of games. I try to play them with an open mind, and it's very rare that I play a game for a little while and don't at least get why people like it. So I tried out the demo of the remake of the first game on the 3DS before the eShop closed down, to see if I wanted to download the full game.

...It's not that I didn't like it. It's more like I couldn't fathom why anyone would enjoy this game. This pretty much never happens. The first-person camera with the same-looking corridors is bad enough, the battles seemed like the most basic RPG battles (which is not really a bad thing, but I don't think simple RPG battles are particularly enjoyable against common enemies), and the fact that you have to make your own maps seemed more cumbersome than anything. I could not see the draw (no pun intended) in stopping every few steps in an already very uninteresting looking, hard to navigate maze to just trace the walls of the path that the game already lit up for me. I get that exploring a new place is exciting, but this is just making you do extra steps that's not challenging or fun in the slightest. In my opinion, it would've been much better if either you had absolutely no map drawn for you whatsoever, and you had to basically create one like it was on a separate piece of paper, or if the game just drew everything for you. But even then, I don't think I would enjoy it, but at least I could understand why someone else would. And it's not the basic structure of the main game I dislike so much, I absolutely love Shiren the Wanderer for example.

But yeah, I'm glad this game makes so many people happy. I'm starting to feel like a weirdo for not enjoying it one bit. This really never happens.

@chagrined haha, I think I will. I am having a great time with III. I can’t believe how much time slips past when I play it.

I haven't picked up the collection as I've officially dedicated 2023 to playing XIV, but having the games relatively fresh in my memory (and by that I mean I played the whole series in the last five or six years), all I want from Atlus is for them to bring the series forward to Switch.

Until I play the Switch port/remaster, I won't be able to comment on the quality, but I'm not expecting these games to blow me away visually. That was never their goal. These are games designed to give hardcore dungeon crawlers something to enjoy, a reminder of how RPGs once were. A throwback. And I love it for that reason.

What I want from Atlus: another collection with IV, V and Nexus, and either DLC for the first collection to include the Untold content, or a separate release for the Untold games.

And Etrian Odyssey VI. Hopefully with something fresh brought to the table; not sure if it was burnout on my part, but both V and Nexus felt... weaker than the games that came before. Personally, my favorites remain 2 Untold and IV.

I've played through some of the first strata in the first game. Having played and absolutely loved each of these when they originally came out, I think this HD collection is amazing. There's not much in the way of QOL improvements, but what's there is a legit gamechanger if you use it wisely. In particular, the ability to switch difficulty levels on the fly, the ability to fast-walk through dungeons, and the ability to autobattle on "very fast" speed are a big improvement on the original EO1. I think the best way to play or replay this game is to play on Expert mode (which was the original difficulty), but anytime you feel the need to grind to progress past some brutally difficult boss or section, move the difficulty down to Picnic and keep autobattling easy-enough enemies on very fast speed until you're in better shape. Then switch back to Expert. Just the ability to avoid these huge walls of difficulty when you want to is a godsend. You're still going to need to exploit every single resource and strategy you have to succeed, I imagine, but this will at least get you out of tedious grinding, of which I remember there being a lot of in EO1.

In future entries, Atlus may want to consider having a straight-up Mod section of the game where you can earn 2x or 4x XP from enemies by toggling a switch. This is an option in the FF Pixel Remasters for Switch and it's great. I would respect the decision to not include a "remove random encounters" mod, because it probably runs the risk of breaking the intended tension and dread of making it back to an inn in one piece.

I aleady have Untold 1 & 2 on 3DS, so as lovely as they look, I'll probably just grab 3 in a sale (and even then I'd be in no major hurry to play it).

What I would have absolutely double-dipped for would be if they'd done an "Untold trilogy HD", with the third one Untoldified for good measure.

How about having a TATE mode to replicate the DS experience in the Switch's handheld mode?
